In the <a href="/wiki/1800_United_States_presidential_election" title="1800 United States presidential election">U.S. presidential election of 1800</a>, <a href="/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson" title="Thomas Jefferson">Thomas Jefferson</a> and <a href="/wiki/Aaron_Burr" title="Aaron Burr">Aaron Burr</a> were tied at 73 <a href="/wiki/United_States_Electoral_College" title="United States Electoral College">electoral votes</a> each, and in accordance with the <a href="/wiki/United_States_Constitution" class="mw-redirect" title="United States Constitution">Constitution</a> the election was determined via a <a href="/wiki/Contingent_election" title="Contingent election">contingent election</a> in the <a href="/wiki/United_States_House_of_Representatives" title="United States House of Representatives">House of Representatives</a>, where it took six days of debate and 36 ballots to elect Jefferson as the winner.<sup id="cite_ref-12" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-12"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a></sup> </p><p>Between rounds of balloting, members can make motions to help the assembly complete the election within a reasonable time.
