line-height: 150%; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing is a national key university directly supervised by China Ministry of Education, which has been listed into the national “211 Project” and the “985 Project Innovation Platform”,as well as the “Double First-Class” Construction universities.. It is also one of the initial member universities for the Strategic Alliance of Industrial Technology Innovation, with its development supported jointly by the Ministry of Education and China’s State Administration of Work Safety. In 1960 and 1978, the university was identified twice as a national key university and was included in the initial list of universities with doctor and master degree conferring authority, now the university has a graduate school and 13 schools. The university is composed of two campuses: Xueyuan Road campus located on Xueyuan Road, the university zone in Haidian District of Beijing, and Shahe campus located in Shahe Higher Education Zone in Changping District of Beijing. Currently, there are over 18,000 students enrolled, including 8,700 undergraduates, 7,800 master’s students, and 1,800 doctoral candidates.</span></p> <p style="margin-bottom:10px;text-align:justify;text-justify: inter-ideograph;line-height:150%;background:white"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The predecessor of China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing was Jiaozuo School of Railroad and Mines founded in the year of 1909. In 1931, the school was renamed as Private Jiaozuo Engineering College. In 1938, the Institute moved to West China and merged with the engineering colleges of Northeastern University, former Beiyang University and Beiping University into National Northwestern Polytechnical College. In 1946, Jiaozuo Engineering College was restored, and then moved back to Jiaozuo in 1949. In 1950 it was moved from Jiaozuo to Tianjing and renamed as China Institute of Mining and Technology (CIMT). During the nationwide restructuring of universities and colleges in 1952, the mining engineering departments of Tsinghua University, former Beiyang University and Tangshan Institute of Railroad were merged into CIMT, which established a sound basis for its later development. In 1953, CIMT was moved to Beijing, and renamed as Beijing Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1970, the institute was moved to Hechuan, Sichuan Province, and renamed as Sichuan Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1978, the institute was relocated and rebuilt in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, regaining the name China Institute of Mining and Technology. Simultaneously, its Beijing Graduate School was established at the original location on Xueyuan Road in Beijing. In 1988, it was renamed as China University of Mining and Technology Beijing Graduate School. In 1997, the university was renamed as China University of Mining-Beijing Campus. Since 2000, the university has been under the direct supervision of China Ministry of Education. In 2003, with the approval of the central government, the university started its independent operation under the name of China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing. In 1997, CUMTB was listed into the national “211 Project” and then into the “985 Project Innovation Platform” in 2006. In 2017, the university became one of the “World First-rate Discipline Construction Universities”, then in 2022, it was selected as a “Double First-Class” university in the new round of construction.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;line-height:150%"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Currently, the university’s disciplines of Mining Engineering and Safety Science and Engineering are listed as “Double First-Class” disciplines at the national level. Additionally, Urban Engineering Geophysics and Urban Underground Space Engineering are included in the list of high-level university disciplines in Beijing. The university has achieved outstanding results in multiple disciplinary assessments conducted by the Ministry of Education. 8 disciplines are ranked in the top 1% of the ESI rankings, with Engineering and Earth Sciences disciplines ranking in the top 1‰.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;line-height:150%"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The university has focused on meeting the national demand for energy technology and has achieved numerous high-level innovative research outcomes. Since the founding of New China, it has developed the country’s first coal plough and the first mining robot, designed the first jig washer and the first heavy medium coal preparation workshop in China. It has also constructed the country’s first dry coal preparation plant and the first industrial underground gasification base, leading to internationally influential achievements such as the “brick beam” and scientific mining theories, fractal rock mechanics theory, high-resolution 3D seismic detection technology for coal mines, large-scale deformation theory of rock masses, theoretical and methodological prediction of major water hazards in mines, and top-coal caving theories and technologies. Significant technological breakthroughs have been made in coal underground gasification, fine coal-water slurry, and coal-to-oil fields. In the past decade, over 1,500 important research programs related to coal technology and 63 national key R&D programs led by the university, have been completed, and 2 innovative research groups supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China have been approved. The university has received a total of 20 national scientific and technological awards and 608 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological awards. It has established 2 State Key Laboratories, 1 National Engineering Research Center, 2 Engineering Research Centers listed by Ministry of Education, 3 Key Laboratories listed by the Ministry of Emergency Management, and 2 Key Laboratories list by Beijing Municipal Government.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;line-height:150%"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The university currently boasts 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 1 foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Additionally, there are 1 “National Distinguished Engineering Team” and 2 “National Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams”. 2 individuals serve as members of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 7 have been recognized as national-level young experts with outstanding contributions, 12 have been appointed as specially-appointed professors under the “Yangtze River Scholar Award Program”, 3 have been selected as leading figures in science and technology innovation under the “National High-Level Talents Special Support Plan”, 5 have been appointed as young scholars under the “Yangtze River Scholar Award Program”, 9 have received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 have received the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 10 have been selected as young top-notch talents under the “National Plan for the Special Support for Top-notch Talents”, 2 have been recognized as “National Excellent Teachers”, 1 has received the National Advanced Individual Award for Textbook Construction, 1 has been selected as a renowned teacher under the “National Plan for the Special Support for Top-notch Talents” and 37 have been awarded titles such as “People’s Teacher in Beijing” and “Excellent Teacher in Beijing”.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;line-height:150%"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The university advocates for innovative graduate education and research-oriented undergraduate education, and it has established an elite education and teaching system for the energy industry, and cultivated a group of leading talents in the energy sector. Since the founding of New China, the university has produced the first academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering in the coal industry, as well as the first master’s and doctoral degrees. It also compiled China’s first mathematical reference book, the <em>Mathematics Handbook</em>. 8 doctoral dissertations have been selected as national outstanding doctoral dissertations. For many years , more than 55% of the postgraduates choose to pursue further study. Currently, the university possesses 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 2 national engineering practice education centers, and 3 virtual instruction center pilot schemes under the Ministry of Education. Additionally, 19 majors have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 10 majors have been selected as Beijing first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 2 majors have been selected as key first-class majors in Beijing universities. 83% of the majors have been selected as national and Beijing first-class majors. The university has received 2 national teaching achievement awards and 29 Beijing teaching achievement awards. Since 1998, over a thousand students from the university have won awards in high-level science and technology competitions at the provincial level and above, both domestically and internationally.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;line-height:150%"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The university promotes cooperation and exchanges both domestically and internationally, boasting the country’s first national university science and technology park with energy and safety features, namely the “Zhongguancun Energy and Safety Science and Technology Park” and the “China University of Mining and Technology Overseas Students Pioneer Park”. It has co-founded the “Beijing High-Tech University Alliance” with 12 domestic high-level universities with distinctive industry characteristics and the “Belt and Road” Mining University Alliance with universities from 11 countries. It has consecutively established 6 bases under the “High-level Talent Introduction Plan for Subject Innovation in Higher Education Institutions”. The university has signed cooperation agreements with 69 world-renowned universities and research institutes and strategic cooperation agreements with over 80 local governments, enterprises, and institutions. Currently, it has jointly established a number of collaborative innovation institutions with cities such as Beijing, Tianjin and Ordos, continuously supporting high-quality development in the nation, regions, and energy industry.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;line-height:150%"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Over the past 110 years, through the efforts of generations of members, the university has cultivated the motto of “Virtue and Excellence, Diligence and Integrity”, shaping a top-tier brand and unique cultural spirit in China’s energy industry higher education. Looking towards the future, China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing will adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, persist in educating people for the Party and nurturing talents for the country, comprehensively implement the Party’s educational policies, consistently uphold the socialist orientation in running schools, and follow the overall approach of “deepening reforms, strengthening characteristics, enhancing quality, and fostering innovative development”.
