contemplative thinking on the other-is to say only what every reader's experience will corroborate' (1983: 2). This opinion is strongly reinforced by the psychologist, Jerome Bruner: There are two modes of cognitive functioning, two modes of thought, each providing distinctive ways of ordering experience, of constructing reality. The two (though complementary) are irreducible to one another. .. Each of the ways of knowing, moreover, has operating principles of its own and its own criteria of well-formedness. They differ radically in their procedure for verification. A good story and a well-formed argument are different natural kinds. 1986: 11 We aim to show that this severe distinction between reasoning and narrative may not be entirely warranted. The distinction has already been called into question to a certain extent by Thomas Sebeok, Jean Umiker-Sebeok and Nancy Harrowitz, who have shown how characters in the detective genre, such as Sherlock Holmes and C. Auguste Dupin, use abduction in solving cases (1983). However, we want to argue that abductive reasoning plays a fundamental role in all narratives and is not limited to the thinking of detective characters or the detective genre. The argument here is that one type of scientific reasoning-what Charles Peirce called abductionis a key factor in explaining how narratives-particularly in regard to plot-are constructed and read. As Peirce explains this cycle, once a hypothesis has been formed through abduction: That which is to be done with the hypothesis is to trace outs its consequences by deduction, to compare them with results of experiment by induction, and to discard the hypothesis, and try another, as soon as the first has been refuted; as it presumably will be. CP 7.220, c. 1901 One of the better, more mature formulations of abduction is the following: The surprising fact, C, is observed But if A were true, C would be a matter of course Hence, there is reason to suspect that A is true (CP 5.189, 1903). As Peirce explains: Abduction makes its start from the facts, without, at the outset, having any particular theory in view, though it is motivated by the feeling that a theory is needed to explain the surprising facts. Induction makes its start from a hypothesis which seems to recommend itself, without at the outset having any particular facts in view, though it feels the need of facts to support the theory. Abduction seeks a theory. Induction seeks for facts. In induction the study of the hypothesis suggests the experiments which bring to light the very facts to which the hypothesis had pointed. CP 7.218, 1901 Abduction is contextual since scientists already work in the context of a set of hypotheses and theories about the world. As experiment and testing of these hypotheses go on, the results often produce anomalies, puzzles and generate problems that need solving. It is a weak form of inference, more like guesswork or surmise (CP 2.625, 1878). ' Abduction is, after all, nothing but good guessing' , Peirce says (CP 7.219, 1901). These days, most thinkers accept abduction in some form as a crucial part of scientific reasoning (Harré 1988; Psillos 2000; Lipton 2004). Gilbert Harman called it 'the inference to best explanation' , although he thought that the better explanation among alternatives would be a warrant for the truth of the hypothesis (1965). Much of current accounts of abduction also take up this position (Douven, 2017; Schupack and Springer, 2011; Schurz, 2008). Although Peirce sometimes gives an account of abduction that lends itself to that view (CP 5.189, 1903), Peirce would certainly reject Harman's claim. This opinion is strongly reinforced by the psychologist, Jerome Bruner: There are two modes of cognitive functioning, two modes of thought, each providing distinctive ways of ordering experience, of constructing reality. The two (though complementary) are irreducible to one another. .. Each of the ways of knowing, moreover, has operating principles of its own and its own criteria of well-formedness. They differ radically in their procedure for verification. A good story and a well-formed argument are different natural kinds. 1986: 11 We aim to show that this severe distinction between reasoning and narrative may not be entirely warranted. The distinction has already been called into question to a certain extent by Thomas Sebeok, Jean Umiker-Sebeok and Nancy Harrowitz, who have shown how characters in the detective genre, such as Sherlock Holmes and C. Auguste Dupin, use abduction in solving cases (1983). However, we want to argue that abductive reasoning plays a fundamental role in all narratives and is not limited to the thinking of detective characters or the detective genre. The argument here is that one type of scientific reasoning-what Charles Peirce called abductionis a key factor in explaining how narratives-particularly in regard to plot-are constructed and read. As Peirce explains: Abduction makes its start from the facts, without, at the outset, having any particular theory in view, though it is motivated by the feeling that a theory is needed to explain the surprising facts. Induction makes its start from a hypothesis which seems to recommend itself, without at the outset having any particular facts in view, though it feels the need of facts to support the theory. Abduction seeks a theory. Induction seeks for facts. In induction the study of the hypothesis suggests the experiments which bring to light the very facts to which the hypothesis had pointed. CP 7.218, 1901 Abduction is contextual since scientists already work in the context of a set of hypotheses and theories about the world. As experiment and testing of these hypotheses go on, the results often produce anomalies, puzzles and generate problems that need solving. It is a weak form of inference, more like guesswork or surmise (CP 2.625, 1878). ' Abduction is, after all, nothing but good guessing' , Peirce says (CP 7.219, 1901). These days, most thinkers accept abduction in some form as a crucial part of scientific reasoning (Harré 1988; Psillos 2000; Lipton 2004). Gilbert Harman called it 'the inference to best explanation' , although he thought that the better explanation among alternatives would be a warrant for the truth of the hypothesis (1965). Much of current accounts of abduction also take up this position (Douven, 2017; Schupack and Springer, 2011; Schurz, 2008). Our main thesis is that merely the hypothesis-generative aspect, but not the evaluative aspect, is properly abductive in the sense introduced by C.S. Peirce. We show why equating abduction with IBE (or understanding them as inseparable parts) unnecessarily complicates argument evaluation by levelling the status of abduction as a third reasoning mode (besides deduction and induction). The acquisition of the actual effect required by the method of scientific reasoning expressed by Peirce's maxim must be accomplished by resorting to abductive logic. Abductive logic starts from a surprising fact, derives a hypothetical explanation about that fact, and finally arrives at the possibility that the hypothesis is true. This is the process of abductive reasoning, as provided by Peirce, which is distinct from induction and deduction and generates explanatory views. Peirce opposed a unified and unchangeable concept of causality. He used different interpretations of causality to illustrate the considerable differences in people's understanding of cause and effect in different periods. One traditional interpretation of Peirce on abduction sees it as a recipe for generating new theoretical discoveries. A second standard view sees abduction as a mode of reasoning that justifies beliefs about the probable truth of theories. While each reading has some grounding in Peirce's writings, each leaves out features that are crucial to Peirce's distinctive understanding of abduction. I develop and defend a third interpretation, according to which Peirce takes abductive reasoning to lead to judgments about the relative pursuitworthiness of theories; conclusions that can be thoroughly disconnected from assessments of truth-value. What is behind these labels is, however, not so clear. In particular, the common identification of "abduction" with "Inference to the Best Explanation" (IBE) begs the question, since IBE appears to be covered by Peirce's concept of induction, not that of abduction. Consequently, abduction ought to be distinguished from IBE, at least on Peirce's account. The main aim of the paper, however, is to show that this distinction is most relevant with respect to current problems in philosophy of science and epistemology (like attempts to supply suitable notions of realism and truth as well as related concepts like coherence and unification). In particular, I also try to show that (and in what way) Peirce's inferential triad can function as a method that ensures both coherence and correspondence. However, he ultimately concluded that Peirce’s conception of abduction was a muddle. Despite the deeply problematic nature of Peirce’s theory of abduction in these respects, Kapitan’s work on Peircean abduction offers insight into the nature of abductive inquiry that is importantly relevant to the task of making sense of explanatory inquiry in the sciences in general. The view developed here stems from his work and involves disambiguating three forms of inference involved in Peircean abduction in terms of Reichenbach’s and Laudan’s context models of inquiry. The first is Pierce’s attempt to find a form of syllogism that would represent abduction. In his last attempts to suggest a syllogism, I show that its conclusion is equivalent to a doubly negated predicate. Since Pierce then considers its corresponding positive predicate, this kind of change of the predicate is called the Pierce principle, which is similar, but weaker than Markov’s. The second way is to provide definitions of abduction as a process of construction of an entire theory rather than as the construction of a single law. These definitions are compared with the model of organization of a scientific theory that my previous works recognized through a comparative analysis of many important scientific theories whose aim is to discover a solution of a fundamental problem, how investigate an unknown or illdefined entity. Each of these theories proceeds by means of reasoning whose conclusion is a doubly negated predicate, which is then changed by the author into the corresponding affirmative predicate, which in turn takes on the role of a hypothesis from which all possible consequences are deduced and then verified experimentally. I will show that this change in the predicate is regulated by the principle of sufficient reason, which is stronger than Peirce’s principle.
