This specialtywhich has experienced substantial growth over the past ten years, with two new journals, an industry conference, and a major initiative at the annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association in 2017-is marked by both theoretical and practical challenges and significant opportunities. Business anthropology has emerged to respond to a growing need, in corporate and government bodies, for a close examination of the behavioral and cognitive influencers in decision making. The applications have grown with every passing year, from advertising to marketing to product development to governance to mergers and acquisitions to banking, and well beyond. Preparation for careers in these fields is not more than 25 years old, but the demand is growing exponentially. In the article, drawing on nearly two decades of research-fieldwork with women on Wall Street, consulting work as a business anthropologist, and a new project on global gender equity initiatives-I discussed the challenges of studying ethnographically the global gender policy movement. Working in new assemblages of institutions, persons, and practices, I wrote, had altered my understanding of the purpose of anthropology. Following state, corporate, and academic actors coming together at conferences, I saw that I was navigating a field in which others were already conducting research, taking action and making policy on gender, and that these elite actors were themselves already engaged in some form of ethnographic inquiry. Anthropologists focusing on business and industry are in the admirable position of being able to study these change effects even more quickly than anthropologists focusing on classic topics such as religion, political structures, ideology, and family life. Maryann McCabe and Elizabeth K. Briody articulate this well in a new collection, Cultural Change from a Business Anthropology Perspective (McCabe and Briody 2018). This paper addresses such issues by describing and analyzing fieldwork experiences of an academic workshop, which took place at the Copenhagen Business School in 2012 under the title of 'The Business of Ethnography'. The purpose of the workshop was to create a forum in which to discuss business anthropology as an emerging field or sub-discipline of anthropology. The paper considers three conditions (reflexivity, familiarity, and temporality) which give the mise en abyme configuration of the fieldthe site where action happens -and pose significant challenges to contemporary business ethnographers.
