In 2010, the Workplace Bullying Institute, a national education and advocacy group, reported that female bullies directed their hostilities toward other women 80% of the time—up 9% since 2007. Male bullies, by contrast, were generally equal-opportunity tormentors.</p> <p>A 2011 survey of 1,000 working women by the American Management Association found that 95% of them believed they were undermined by another woman at some point in their careers. According to a 2008 University of Toronto study of nearly 1,800 U.S. employees, women working under female supervisors reported more symptoms of physical and psychological stress than did those working under male supervisors.</p></blockquote> <p>The article points out that Queen Bees often assault careers in ways that leave “no fingerprints.” I find this interesting; I think that men are more direct in their tactics, often women tend to be more manipulative so that they do not have to take responsibility for their actions and can deny or disown them. And their victims barely know what hit them. Men’s directness is easier to spot and criticize, women’s tactics, not so much. That compares with only 21 percent for those worth $100,000 or less.</p> <p>The multi-millionaires are also twice as satisfied with their social life, presumably since the wealthy have no shortage of friends and invitations.</p> <p>Nearly three quarters of the penta-millionaires are very satisfied with their marriage or “committed relationship” – far more than the 45 percent reported for the merely affluent. Millionaires are also significantly more likely to report higher levels of satisfaction regarding their relationships with their children (59 percent vs. 52 percent).</p> <p>The findings on relationships and kids are perhaps the most surprising, since we tend to think of large wealth leaving behind a trail of broken marriages, alienated offspring and artificial friendships. The survey shows that, in fact, solid family relationships may not only accompany large wealth – they may in fact be one of the causes.</p></blockquote> <p>This news is not surprising. But their increased paycheck comes at a price, as the researchers show. They find that marriage rates decline when a woman has the potential to outearn her husband. Using US Census Bureau data from 1970 to 2010, Bertrand and her coauthors find that the more likely it is that a wife can earn more than her husband, the less likely she is to work outside the home.</p> <p>Moreover, among adults age 25 to 39, marriage rates have declined from about 81 percent in 1970 to 51 percent in 2010. The authors calculate that as much as 29 percent of that decline may be linked to aversion to a wife earning more than her husband.</p></blockquote> <p>Naturally, the researchers conclude that women picking up all the slack is to blame for higher rates of divorce:</p> <blockquote><p>Moreover, wives who earn more often end up doing more of the household chores, not less. Data from the American Time Use Survey, covering the years 2003 to 2011, showed that while husbands spent an average of 20.8 hours a week on non-market work and childcare, wives spent 33.5 hours on those activities. One explanation for this, the researchers suggest, is that a wife making more money is doing more chores to assuage her husband’s unease. But serving as both the primary breadwinner and the primary homemaker may be draining. That, the researchers point out, “may be one of the mechanisms behind our results on divorce.”</p></blockquote> <p>However, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130305085120/http://www.forbes.com/2006/08/23/Marriage-Careers-Divorce_cx_mn_land.html">studies have also shown</a> that women are unhappy when they earn more than their husbands so I wonder if the unhappiness is caused partly because the women feel that they should have a man with “higher status.”</p> <p>I think in today’s legal climate, it is a good idea for a man to marry someone who makes more money than they do, for the simple reason that it may protect him more down the line if there is a divorce. It’s an entertaining read, to say the least, and it has me wondering about some of the strategies that Clarey brings up and if they are worth implementing.</p> <p>He discusses how the relationship between the state and its citizenry has become parasitic; one chart he mentions shows a full 70% of government spending going to income transfers. “These income transfers are parasitic in nature in that they benefit a <em>specific group of people</em> instead of investments, infrastructure, roads, defense, and other public goods which benefit <em>everyone</em>.” Clarey asks, “..how do you as an individual adapt or change your behavior when your relationship with the state changes from a symbiotic one to that of a parasitical one?”</p> <p>So what do you do? You can kill the parasite, not really an option. Another option is to leave the country but not everyone can pack up and go and finally, the third option and the one Clarey discusses most as he feels it is the most optimal is minimalism. “While there is no official definition, minimalism is essentially shrinking your economic production to its absolute minimum.”</p> <p>So Clarey says that the idea is to work “VERY LITTLE” and still get by. He states, “If you have no major financial obligations (children, mortgage, etc.) the average person can easily get by on $15,000 per year. This amount can be earned quite easily by either working full time at some menial job, or part time as independent contractor with some semblance of a skill.”</p> <p>I do have financial obligations and it would be hard to live on $15,000 a year. Could you do it? If so, how? They have different styles of doing homework and don’t sit still in class. Teachers often hate this and reward girls for their conformity to their rules and penalize boys for their non-conformity and behavior. Teachers can no longer discipline in school, and the only punishment is often suspension. I wonder how the lack of discipline has played a role in teacher’s using grading, perhaps subconsciously to punish boys.</p> <p>More importantly, I wonder how many bureaucrats and teachers, and even parents are using 7-year old boys as targets of revenge for something they perceive was done to girls so many years ago. In my opinion, to use innocent children as a means of revenge for past grievances is child abuse. Too bad there is no government agency that gives a damn that a concerted effort to abuse boys is taking place in Western culture. Boys are being cheated out of higher education. Some will do well despite no college degree and others will flounder.
