The term "round" is often used to describe shapes, movements, and even the cyclical nature of certain events or rituals.

Physical Descriptions:

In the Bible, "round" is frequently used to describe the shape of objects or structures. For instance, in the construction of the Tabernacle and the Temple, various items are described with round features. In 1 Kings 7:23, the "Sea of cast metal" made by Solomon for the Temple is described as "round in shape, ten cubits from brim to brim." This large basin was used for ceremonial washing by the priests, and its round shape may symbolize completeness and the encompassing nature of God's provision.

Symbolic Representations:

The round shape can also carry symbolic meanings in Scripture. Circles or roundness often represent eternity, unity, and the divine nature. The cyclical patterns observed in creation, such as the changing seasons and the phases of the moon, reflect the order and consistency established by God. Ecclesiastes 1:5-7 speaks to the cyclical nature of creation: "The sun rises and the sun sets; it hurries back to where it rises. The wind blows southward, then turns northward; round and round it swirls, ever returning on its course."

Expressions of Completeness:

The concept of roundness can also be associated with completeness or perfection. In biblical numerology, the number seven is often seen as a symbol of completeness, and it is frequently associated with cycles or periods that are rounded off. For example, the seven days of creation in Genesis 1 culminate in a complete and perfect creation, with the seventh day being a day of rest.

Rituals and Ceremonies:

In some biblical rituals, the act of encircling or moving in a round manner is significant. The Israelites' march around the walls of Jericho, as described in Joshua 6, involved encircling the city once a day for six days and seven times on the seventh day. This act of encircling was a demonstration of faith and obedience, leading to the miraculous collapse of the walls.

Heavenly Bodies:

The Bible also references the roundness of heavenly bodies, such as the sun and the moon, which serve as signs and markers of time. Psalm 19:6 describes the sun's course: "It rises at one end of the heavens and runs its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth." The roundness of these celestial bodies reflects the order and precision of God's creation.

In summary, the concept of "round" in the Bible is multifaceted, encompassing physical descriptions, symbolic meanings, and expressions of divine order and completeness. Whether in the form of objects, rituals, or celestial phenomena, roundness often signifies the perfection and eternal nature of God's creation and purposes.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
