they came<MH935>, each<MH376> one<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>with his household<MH1004>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Reuben<MH7205>, Simeon<MH8095>, Levi<MH3878>, and Judah<MH3063>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Issachar<MH3485>, Zebulun<MH2074>, and Benjamin<MH1144>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Dan<MH1835> and Naphtali<MH5321>, Gad<MH1410> and Asher<MH836>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>All<MH3605> the people<MH5315> who descended<MH3318, 3409> from Jacob<MH3290> were seventy<MH7657> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>people<MH5315>, but Joseph<MH3130> was <i>already</i> in Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Joseph<MH3130> died<MH4191>, and all<MH3605> his brothers<MH251> and all<MH3605> that generation<MH1755>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> were<MH6509> fruitful<MH6509> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>increased<MH8317> greatly<MH8317>, and multiplied<MH7235a>, and became<MH6105a> exceedingly<MH3966> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>mighty<MH6105a>, so that the land<MH776> was filled<MH4390> with them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now a new<MH2319> king<MH4428> arose<MH6965> over<MH5921> Egypt<MH4714>, who<MH834> did not know<MH3045> Joseph<MH3130>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to his people<MH5971a>, “Behold<MH2009>, the people<MH5971a> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>too<MH4480> many<MH7227a> and too mighty<MH6099> for us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Come<MH3051>, let us deal<MH2449> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>shrewdly<MH2449> with them, otherwise<MH6435> they will multiply<MH7235a>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>in the event<MH1961, 3588, 7122> of war<MH4421>, they will also<MH1571> join<MH3254> those who<MH834> hate<MH8130> us, and fight<MH3898a> against us and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>depart<MH5927> from the land<MH776>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So they appointed<MH7760> taskmasters<MH8269, 4522> over<MH5921> them to oppress<MH6031a> them with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>hard<MH5450> labor<MH5450>. And they built<MH1129> for Pharaoh<MH6547> storage<MH4543> cities<MH5892b>, Pithom<MH6619> and Raamses<MH7486>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But the more<MH3512c> they oppressed<MH6031a> them, the more<MH3651> they multiplied<MH7235a> and the more<MH3651> they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>spread<MH6555> out<MH6555>, so that they dreaded<MH6973> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The Egyptians<MH4714> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>used violence<MH6531> to compel the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> to labor<MH5647>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and they made<MH4843> their lives<MH2425b> bitter<MH4843> with hard<MH7186> labor<MH5656> in mortar<MH2563a> and bricks<MH3843> and at all<MH3605> <i>kinds of</i> labor<MH5656> in the field<MH7704>, all<MH3605> their labors<MH5656> which<MH834> they violently<MH6531> had them perform<MH5647> as<MH5647> slaves<MH5647>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> spoke<MH559> to the Hebrew<MH5680> midwives<MH3205>, one<MH259> of whom<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>was named<MH8034> Shiphrah<MH8236>, and the other<MH8145> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>was named<MH8034> Puah<MH6326>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>and he said<MH559>, “When you are helping the Hebrew<MH5680> women<MH5680> to give<MH3205> birth<MH3205> and see<MH7200> <i>them</i> upon the birthstool<MH70>, if<MH518> it is a son<MH1121>, then you shall put<MH4191> him to<MH4191> death<MH4191>; but if<MH518> it is a daughter<MH1323>, then she shall live<MH2421a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But the midwives<MH3205> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>feared<MH3372a> God<MH430>, and did not do<MH6213a> as the king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>commanded<MH1696> them, but let the boys<MH3206> live<MH2421a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> called<MH7121> for the midwives<MH3205> and said<MH559> to them, “Why<MH4069> have you done<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>, and let the boys<MH3206> live<MH2421a>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The midwives<MH3205> said<MH559> to Pharaoh<MH6547>, “Because<MH3588> the Hebrew<MH5680> women<MH5680> are not like the Egyptian<MH4713> women<MH802>;
