Tom Sorell -It was a bit of an accident. My first job after the DPhil in Oxford was at the Open University in the UK, and I had the opportunity there in the mid 1980s to design a course in applied ethics. I had not studied moral and political philosophy formally as a graduate student, but I had taught some moral philosophy to undergraduates in Oxford and I had begun to talk to people about some applied ethics topics, including those taken up by friends like John Harris, a distinguished English utilitarian philosopher of medicine. I had also begun looking at applied ethics in the writings of Onora O&#39;Neill, whom I met early in my career. Another author who influenced me when I was turning to applied ethics was Thomas Nagel. His collection of essays, Mortal Questions, made a big impression on me when it was first published. I was also a great admirer then of Bernard Williams&#39; critique of utilitarianism in his published debate with J.J.C. Smart. Later, when I wrote Moral Theory and Anomaly (Blackwell, 2000), I came to be very critical of Williams, especially his scepticism about moral theory. I think moral theory in most of its central forms is valuable, even though the central forms conflict. With Parfit, I believe in the reconcilability of the central forms of theory.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128554451/Normative_political_philosophy_history_of_philosophy_and_how_to_combine_them"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122115609/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128554451"); } document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', () => { const moreLinks = document.querySelectorAll('.more'); moreLinks.forEach(link => { const summary = link.closest('.summary'); const summarized = summary.querySelector('.summarized'); const complete = summary.querySelector('.complete'); // Only show more link if we have both summarized and complete content if (!summarized || !complete) { link.style.display = 'none'; return; } link.addEventListener('click', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); summarized.classList.add('hidden'); complete.classList.remove('hidden'); // Hide the more link since we don't want to toggle back link.style.display = 'none'; }); }); }); // To allow for closing the author dropdown when clicking outside of it document.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const dropdowns = document.querySelectorAll('details.authors-dropdown'); dropdowns.forEach(dropdown => { if (!dropdown.contains(event.target) && dropdown.hasAttribute('open')) { dropdown.removeAttribute('open'); } }); });</script></div><div class="div"><div class="work-card-container"><div class="title"><a attrs="data-click-track topics--work-card-title" href="https://www.academia.edu/128548749/Poverta_e_Natura_Umana">Poverta&#39; e Natura Umana</a></div><div class="authors">by&nbsp;<a href="https://unibo.academia.edu/DiegoLanzi">Diego Lanzi</a></div><div class="work-metadata"><p class="ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-sm">2025, RePEc: Research Papers in Economics</p></div><div class="summary"><div class="summarized">Il concetto di povertà è stato, negli ultimi anni, ampiamente dibattuto all&#39;interno delle scienze sociali. After a brief summary of Pettit&#39;s conceptualization of freedom as non-domination, the paper focuses on the question as to which institutional arrangement Pettit considers commensurate with this normative ideal. The paper prepares the ground for a critical reconstruction of Pettit&#39;s theory of democracy by highlighting the understanding of democracy in the republican tradition within which Pettit aims to develop his contemporary theory of democracy. The reconstruction leads to the argument that Pettit, in neo-Roman republican tradition, has written &#39;the people&#39; as a transformative actor out of the script of democratic theory.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128534699/Freedom_and_Political_Form_On_Philip_Pettit_s_Republican_Theory_of_Democracy"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122099569/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128534699"); } document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', () => { const moreLinks = document.querySelectorAll('.more'); moreLinks.forEach(link => { const summary = link.closest('.summary'); const summarized = summary.querySelector('.summarized'); const complete = summary.querySelector('.complete'); // Only show more link if we have both summarized and complete content if (!summarized || !complete) { link.style.display = 'none'; return; } link.addEventListener('click', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); summarized.classList.add('hidden'); complete.classList.remove('hidden'); // Hide the more link since we don't want to toggle back link.style.display = 'none'; }); }); }); // To allow for closing the author dropdown when clicking outside of it document.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const dropdowns = document.querySelectorAll('details.authors-dropdown'); dropdowns.forEach(dropdown => { if (!dropdown.contains(event.target) && dropdown.hasAttribute('open')) { dropdown.removeAttribute('open'); } }); });</script></div><div class="div"><div class="work-card-container"><div class="title"><a attrs="data-click-track topics--work-card-title" href="https://www.academia.edu/128533573/OTOR%C4%B0TE_TOPLUM_%C4%B0L%C4%B0%C5%9EK%C4%B0S%C4%B0_%C3%9CZER%C4%B0NE_SOSYOLOJ%C4%B0K_B%C4%B0R_%C4%B0NCELEME">OTORİTE-TOPLUM İLİŞKİSİ ÜZERİNE SOSYOLOJİK BİR İNCELEME</a></div><div class="authors">by&nbsp;<a href="https://independentscholar.academia.edu/Gencer%C3%87ak%C4%B1r">Gencer Çakır</a></div><div class="work-metadata"><p class="ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-sm">2025, TARİH VE UYGARLIK</p></div><div class="summary"><div class="summarized">Bu yazıda “otorite”, bireye ve onun doğal niteliklerine odaklanarak salt psikolojik bir olgu olarak değil birey ve toplum arasındaki gerilimli ilişkide ortaya çıkan ilişkisel bir olgu olarak ele alınıyor. São consideradas também as limitações da análise lógica, ao estabelecer a definição standard como única espécie de demonstração canônica.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128517343/A_dimens%C3%A3o_ret%C3%B3rica_da_pr%C3%A1tica_matem%C3%A1tica_euclidiana"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122085152/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128517343"); } document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', () => { const moreLinks = document.querySelectorAll('.more'); moreLinks.forEach(link => { const summary = link.closest('.summary'); const summarized = summary.querySelector('.summarized'); const complete = summary.querySelector('.complete'); // Only show more link if we have both summarized and complete content if (!summarized || !complete) { link.style.display = 'none'; return; } link.addEventListener('click', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); summarized.classList.add('hidden'); complete.classList.remove('hidden'); // Hide the more link since we don't want to toggle back link.style.display = 'none'; }); }); }); // To allow for closing the author dropdown when clicking outside of it document.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const dropdowns = document.querySelectorAll('details.authors-dropdown'); dropdowns.forEach(dropdown => { if (!dropdown.contains(event.target) && dropdown.hasAttribute('open')) { dropdown.removeAttribute('open'); } }); });</script></div><div class="div"><div class="work-card-container"><div class="title"><a attrs="data-click-track topics--work-card-title" href="https://www.academia.edu/128513088/Workshop_Phenomenology_and_Marxism">Workshop Phenomenology and Marxism.</a></div><div class="authors">by&nbsp;<a href="https://conicet.academia.edu/CeliaCabrera">Celia Cabrera</a> and&nbsp;<details class="authors-dropdown"><summary>1 more</summary><div class="dropdown-content"><div class="dropdown-item"><a href="https://unipd.academia.edu/ElenaBillwiller">Elena Billwiller</a></div></div></details></div><div class="work-metadata"><p class="ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-sm">2025</p></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128513088/Workshop_Phenomenology_and_Marxism"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122081775/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128513088"); } document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', () => { const moreLinks = document.querySelectorAll('.more'); moreLinks.forEach(link => { const summary = link.closest('.summary'); const summarized = summary.querySelector('.summarized'); const complete = summary.querySelector('.complete'); // Only show more link if we have both summarized and complete content if (!summarized || !complete) { link.style.display = 'none'; return; } link.addEventListener('click', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); summarized.classList.add('hidden'); complete.classList.remove('hidden'); // Hide the more link since we don't want to toggle back link.style.display = 'none'; }); }); }); // To allow for closing the author dropdown when clicking outside of it document.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const dropdowns = document.querySelectorAll('details.authors-dropdown'); dropdowns.forEach(dropdown => { if (!dropdown.contains(event.target) && dropdown.hasAttribute('open')) { dropdown.removeAttribute('open'); } }); });</script></div><div class="div"><div class="work-card-container"><div class="title"><a attrs="data-click-track topics--work-card-title" href="https://www.academia.edu/128511290/W_Lewis_on_Althusser_Poor_Marks">W. During that time, his writings attracted a lot of attention and enjoyed an extraordinary dominance within Marxism not only as a philosophy but also as a research program in a wide range of social scientific fields. The quick rise to the top, however, was followed by a precipitous fall. The shortcomings that marred his initial attempt to reformulate Marxism in terms of its philosophy and science discredited his whole project. Those problems have already been well documented by, among others, Benton (1984), and, most authoritatively, Elliot (1987). Althusser was not oblivious to those problems. He revised parts of his theory (his metaphilosophy and ideology), he made his self-criticism (though it was not very detailed) and tried to regenerate interest in his approach. Nothing, however, was the same; the movement that he initiated, it seemed, had spent its force. And from November 1980 until his death in 1990, Althusser&#39;s fate oscillated between the incomprehensible and the tragic with the murder of his wife, his companion of thirty-five years. Althusser never really followed through with reformulating his views after the self-criticism. It was left to his disciples to reconstruct his thought, especially his philosophy of the sciences.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128511290/W_Lewis_on_Althusser_Poor_Marks"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122080492/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128511290"); } document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', () => { const moreLinks = document.querySelectorAll('.more'); moreLinks.forEach(link => { const summary = link.closest('.summary'); const summarized = summary.querySelector('.summarized'); const complete = summary.querySelector('.complete'); // Only show more link if we have both summarized and complete content if (!summarized || !complete) { link.style.display = 'none'; return; } link.addEventListener('click', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); summarized.classList.add('hidden'); complete.classList.remove('hidden'); // Hide the more link since we don't want to toggle back link.style.display = 'none'; }); }); }); // To allow for closing the author dropdown when clicking outside of it document.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const dropdowns = document.querySelectorAll('details.authors-dropdown'); dropdowns.forEach(dropdown => { if (!dropdown.contains(event.target) && dropdown.hasAttribute('open')) { dropdown.removeAttribute('open'); } }); });</script></div><div class="div"><div class="work-card-container"><div class="title"><a attrs="data-click-track topics--work-card-title" href="https://www.academia.edu/128511273/%CE%97_%CF%83%CF%85%CE%BD%CE%AC%CE%BD%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%B7_%CF%84%CF%89%CE%BD_%CE%A0%CF%81%CE%BF%CE%B8%CF%8D%CE%BC%CF%89%CE%BD_%CE%A0%CE%BF%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82_%CE%AE%CF%84%CE%B1%CE%BD_%CE%BF_%CE%A0%CF%81%CF%8C%CE%B8%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%BF%CF%82_%CE%97%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B8%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82_The_convention_of_Paris_for_Ukraine_was_titled_the_meeting_of_the_Eager_Were_there_any_eager_idiots_in_the_meeting_">Η συνάντηση των «Προθύμων» - Ποιος ήταν ο «Πρόθυμος Ηλίθιος»; - The convention of Paris for Ukraine was titled the &quot;meeting of the Eager - Were there any eager idiots in the meeting?&quot;</a></div><div class="authors">by&nbsp;<a href="https://uoa.academia.edu/NikosStravelakis">Nikos Stravelakis</a></div><div class="work-metadata"><p class="ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-sm">2025</p></div><div class="summary"><div class="summarized">This article is about the most recent EU-organized meeting on Ukraine that took place in Paris last week. It is becoming a custom that whenever Zelenski approaches the US willing to offer Ukrainian resources against a peace plan, the EU countries, Britain, and others provide him with a meeting as well as money to continue the war. This way, Zelenski proves he has a negotiating position, and the EU and Britain keep their hopes of a share in the spoils of war. The problem is that the Ukrainians are retreating in the war field, and the EU is paying huge amounts of money to keep their hopes alive. The only ones that are better off are the war industries that receive new orders as existing war materials take the route to Ukraine, and the European Armies are supplied with more updated war materials (PARON 30/3/2025).</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128511273/%CE%97_%CF%83%CF%85%CE%BD%CE%AC%CE%BD%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%83%CE%B7_%CF%84%CF%89%CE%BD_%CE%A0%CF%81%CE%BF%CE%B8%CF%8D%CE%BC%CF%89%CE%BD_%CE%A0%CE%BF%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82_%CE%AE%CF%84%CE%B1%CE%BD_%CE%BF_%CE%A0%CF%81%CF%8C%CE%B8%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%BF%CF%82_%CE%97%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B8%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82_The_convention_of_Paris_for_Ukraine_was_titled_the_meeting_of_the_Eager_Were_there_any_eager_idiots_in_the_meeting_"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122080460/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128511273"); It highlights how domestic political motivations undermine diplomatic efforts and compliance with international legal frameworks. By employing a thematic analysis of recent conflicts and ceasefires, the study identifies patterns of behaviour that reveal the detrimental effects of preferring national interests over collaborative peace initiatives. The findings emphasise the urgent need for a renewed commitment to international cooperation and the rule of law, as the failure to uphold these principles exacerbates humanitarian crises and threatens global stability. This research contributes to understanding the complex interplay between domestic politics and international relations, providing policymakers with valuable insights and recommendations for future diplomatic strategies.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128505903/Democracy_and_Diplomacy_under_Siege_A_Comparative_Study_of_Political_Interests_and_International_Law_in_Conflict_Zones"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122076116/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128505903"); } document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', () => { const moreLinks = document.querySelectorAll('.more'); moreLinks.forEach(link => { const summary = link.closest('.summary'); const summarized = summary.querySelector('.summarized'); const complete = summary.querySelector('.complete'); // Only show more link if we have both summarized and complete content if (!summarized || !complete) { link.style.display = 'none'; return; } link.addEventListener('click', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); summarized.classList.add('hidden'); complete.classList.remove('hidden'); // Hide the more link since we don't want to toggle back link.style.display = 'none'; }); }); }); // To allow for closing the author dropdown when clicking outside of it document.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const dropdowns = document.querySelectorAll('details.authors-dropdown'); dropdowns.forEach(dropdown => { if (!dropdown.contains(event.target) && dropdown.hasAttribute('open')) { dropdown.removeAttribute('open'); } }); });</script></div><div class="div"><div class="work-card-container"><div class="title"><a attrs="data-click-track topics--work-card-title" href="https://www.academia.edu/128503701/What_Is_To_Be_Built_Lenin_and_Utopia">What Is To Be Built?: Lenin and Utopia</a></div><div class="authors">by&nbsp;<a href="https://princeton.academia.edu/AndrewCole">Andrew Cole</a></div><div class="work-metadata"><p class="ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-sm">2025, Communis Press / Crisis &amp; Critique</p></div><div class="summary"><div class="summarized">Lenin was a utopian thinker, after all. The first part focuses on Kant&#39;s understanding of Enlightenment as a process. It unearths a latent tension between the two main elements of this process: the universal, i.e. superhistorical, rational faculties of all rational beings, and the particular, i.e. historical conditions for the development of these faculties. These conditions are summarized in the emergence of public sphere in 18th century Prussia and/or in the so-called &#39;Western World&#39;. The tension arises from Kant&#39;s effort to connect in a quasi-necessary way the superhistorical element and the historical element of the Enlightenment process. The second part of the article exhibits the reasons, why Kant&#39;s article assumes such a prominent role in the writings of the late Michel Foucault. It depicts the way that Foucault makes use of the aforementioned tension in Kant&#39;s essay in order to replace the canonical Kantian concept of critique with Kant&#39;s concept of Enlightenment as critique. The third and final part of the article offers a diagnosis of the contemporary sociopolitical state-of-affairs. It argues that Kant&#39;s concept of Enlightenment as such and Foucault&#39;s modification thereof summarize the reasons that lead to the contemporary crisis of authority vis-à-vis politics, religion and state institutions. From this diagnosis arises the need for a new conceptualization of the relation between modern individual freedom and authority. Kansakoulut tosin yleistyivät maassam- me erittäin hitaasti. Suburban radio music in the U.S. from the late 1960s and ‘70s, in other words, is the best example for the critique of postmodernism. For this was the time when, like never before, there were innumerable examples of self-referential tunes—in others words, countless instances of songs about songs, music about music, song-making about song-making, listening about listening. Such music about itself exhorts people to come together for some greater good that, in the end, amounts to buying a bunch of stuff. It’s music that imagines people relating to one another through commodities, in other words, and music about music is the specific vehicle for this imaginary tenor. To some readers, of course, any critical thesis about popular music as a self-referring commodity comes as no surprise, and needs no Theodor Adorno to decipher. But quite why this music is fetishistic in the way Adorno spoke of jazz, and indeed how it is ideological, is worth exploring, if for no other reason than the fact that this music is ubiquitous and inescapable.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128486745/Music_about_Music_or_Adorno_Comes_Alive_"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122060236/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128486745"); This prepares part 3’s argument that Hegel’s concept-metaphysics— <br />along with their notion of undetermined, self- referential universality —motivate <br />him to reject all pre-Kantian naturalisms that champion universal explicability as <br />well as to reject Kant’s and Fichte’s consciousness- based idealisms. Hegel thus <br />relies on what he calls the concept’s radically undetermined universality to (1) dif- <br />ferentiate the domain of Geist as universality-explicating and thus as ‘subjective’ <br />while the domain of nature is ‘objective’ because it only implies universality, (2) <br />defend the individual mind‘s supernatural, undetermined autonomy. Ultimately, it is <br />thus Hegel’s commitment to concept-metaphysics that grounds his account of the <br />absolute idea as origin of nature and Geist and that justifies the rejection of the <br />labels ‘naturalism’ and ‘spiritualism’ in favour of ‘idealism’ as least misleading <br />description of his philosophical project.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128483044/Chapter_Beyond_Naturalism_Spiritualism_and_Finite_Idealism_Hegel_on_the_Relationship_Between_Metaphysical_Truth_Nature_and_Mind_Springer_"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122057130/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128483044"); We employ John Holloway&#39;s notion of “crack”, approaching the pandemic as a crisis-ridden spatiotemporality which entails a new process of social class-ification. Consequently, a chain of social explosions and rebellions against it emerges. Then, we move through Félix Guattari&#39;s perspective which permits a reading of the body not only as carrier of the social cohesion of capital, but also as a material base of emancipation. Combining Holloway&#39;s and Guattari&#39;s thinking, this article brings to the surface of the pandemic the notion of “encounter”: a social experience of the collective body that defies the medicalization-biologization of life and clashes with the forms of capitalism, creating and extending cracks in which social relations can change unpredictably at different levels of coexistence.</div></div><div class="button-container"><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-view" href="https://www.academia.edu/128479015/Emancipating_Our_Lost_Bodies_in_the_Pandemic_Era"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">description</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View Paper</span></a><a class="ds2-5-text-link no-padding" data-click-track="topics--work-card-download" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/122053789/download_file?st=MTc0MzUzNDg1Miw4LjIyMi4yMDguMTQ2&s=topics-page-work-card" rel="nofollow"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">arrow_downward</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download</span></a></div></div><script>if (false) { window.setUpFigureCarousel("work-strip-figures-128479015"); } document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', () => { const moreLinks = document.querySelectorAll('.more'); moreLinks.forEach(link => { const summary = link.closest('.summary'); const summarized = summary.querySelector('.summarized'); const complete = summary.querySelector('.complete'); // Only show more link if we have both summarized and complete content if (!summarized || !complete) { link.style.display = 'none'; return; } link.addEventListener('click', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); summarized.classList.add('hidden'); complete.classList.remove('hidden'); // Hide the more link since we don't want to toggle back link.style.display = 'none'; }); }); }); // To allow for closing the author dropdown when clicking outside of it document.addEventListener('click', (event) => { const dropdowns = document.querySelectorAll('details.authors-dropdown'); dropdowns.forEach(dropdown => { if (!dropdown.contains(event.target) && dropdown.hasAttribute('open')) { dropdown.removeAttribute('open'); } }); });</script></div><div class="div"><div class="work-card-container"><div class="title"><a attrs="data-click-track topics--work-card-title" href="https://www.academia.edu/128467767/Francis_Hutcheson_and_the_Founding_Fathers">Francis Hutcheson and the Founding Fathers</a></div><div class="authors">by&nbsp;<a href="https://claremont.academia.edu/ShahramArshadnejad">Shahram Arshadnejad</a></div><div class="work-metadata"><p class="ds-work-card--detail ds2-5-body-sm">2025</p></div><div class="summary"><div class="summarized">Hutcheson (1694-1746) greatly influenced the American Founding Fathers with his development of the concept of the moral sense as a guiding principle for human conduct.
