Therefore, a precision biaxial rotary system (gimbal) is required for mounting Unit Under Test, UUT. The Gimbal systems can be utilized for precise positioning of the UUT; hence, optical test can be performed with high accuracy. The weight of UUT, which is placed outside the axis of rotation, causes an off-axis moment to the mounting armature. The off-axis moment can act against the direction of movement for some orientation, thus the electrical motor, which rotates the gimbal axis, has to apply higher level of torque to guide and stabilize the system. Moreover, UUT and its mounting fixture to the gimbal can be changed, which causes change in applied resistance moment to the gimbals electrical motor. In this study, a preloaded spring is added to the gimbal system for minimizing applied off axis moment with the help of four bar mechanism. Two different possible methods for preloading spring are introduced and system optimization is performed to eliminate all moment which is created by off axis weight. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adaptive" title="adaptive">adaptive</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=balancing" title=" balancing"> balancing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gimbal" title=" gimbal"> gimbal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mechanics" title=" mechanics"> mechanics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spring" title=" spring"> spring</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/128802/adjustable-counter-weight-for-full-turn-rotary-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/128802.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">121</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Gimbal Structure for the Design of 3D Flywheel System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cheng-En%20Tsai">Cheng-En Tsai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chung-Chun%20Hsiao"> Chung-Chun Hsiao</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fu-Yuan%20Chang"> Fu-Yuan Chang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Liang-Lun%20Lan"> Liang-Lun Lan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jia-Ying%20Tu"> Jia-Ying Tu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> New design of three dimensional (3D) flywheel system based on gimbal and gyro mechanics is proposed. The 3D flywheel device utilizes the rotational motion of three spherical shells and the conservation of angular momentum to achieve planar locomotion. Actuators mounted to the ring-shape frames are installed within the system to drive the spherical shells to rotate, for the purpose of steering and stabilization. Similar to the design of 2D flywheel system, it is expected that the spherical shells may function like a “flyball” to store and supply mechanical energy; additionally, in comparison with typical single-wheel and spherical robots, the 3D flywheel can be used for developing omnidirectional robotic systems with better mobility. The Lagrangian method is applied to derive the equation of motion of the 3D flywheel system, and simulation studies are presented to verify the proposed design. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gimbal" title="Gimbal">Gimbal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spherical%20robot" title=" spherical robot"> spherical robot</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gyroscope" title=" gyroscope"> gyroscope</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lagrangian%20formulation" title=" Lagrangian formulation"> Lagrangian formulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flyball" title=" flyball"> flyball</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22902/gimbal-structure-for-the-design-of-3d-flywheel-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22902.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">627</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Development of a Three-Dimensional-Flywheel Robotic System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chung-Chun%20Hsiao">Chung-Chun Hsiao</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yu-Kai"> Yu-Kai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ting"> Ting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kai-Yuan%20Liu"> Kai-Yuan Liu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pang-Wei%20Yen"> Pang-Wei Yen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jia-Ying%20Tu"> Jia-Ying Tu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, a new design of spherical robotic system based on the concepts of gimbal structure and gyro dynamics is presented. Therefore, the proposed robotic design uses a spherical shell as the main body for ground locomotion, instead of using wheel devices. Three spherical shells are structured in a similar way to a gimbal device and rotate like a gyro system. The design and mechanism of the proposed robotic system is introduced. EO stabilized platforms usually consist of an assembly of structure, bearings, and motors called gimbals in which a gyroscope is installed. EO elements such as a CCD camera and IR camera, are mounted to a gimbal, which has a range of motion in elevation and azimuth and can designate and track a target. In addition, a laser range finder (LRF) can be added to the gimbal in order to acquire the precise slant range from the platform to the target. Recently, a versatile functionality of target localization is needed in order to cooperate with the weapon systems that are mounted on the same platform. The target information, such as its location or velocity, needed to be more accurate. The accuracy of the target information depends on diverse component errors and alignment errors of each component. Specially, the type of moving platform can affect the accuracy of the target information. In the case of flying platforms, or UAVs, the target location error can be increased with altitude so it is important to measure altitude as precisely as possible. In the case of surface ships, target location error can be increased with obliqueness of the elevation angle of the gimbal since the altitude of the EO stabilized platform is supposed to be relatively low. The farther the slant ranges from the surface ship to the target, the more extreme the obliqueness of the elevation angle. This can hamper the precise acquisition of the target information. So far, there have been many studies on EO stabilized platforms of flying vehicles. However, few researchers have focused on ship-borne EO stabilized platforms of the surface ship. In this paper, we deal with a target localization method when an EO stabilized platform is located on the mast of a surface ship. Especially, we need to overcome the limitation caused by the obliqueness of the elevation angle of the gimbal. We introduce a well-known approach for target localization using Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and present the problem definition showing the above-mentioned limitation. Finally, we want to show the effectiveness of the approach that will be demonstrated through computer simulations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=target%20localization" title="target localization">target localization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ship-borne%20electro-optical%20stabilized%20platform" title=" ship-borne electro-optical stabilized platform"> ship-borne electro-optical stabilized platform</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unscented%20kalman%20filter" title=" unscented kalman filter"> unscented kalman filter</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52398/the-enhancement-of-target-localization-using-ship-borne-electro-optical-stabilized-platform" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52398.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">520</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> A Microsurgery-Specific End-Effector Equipped with a Bipolar Surgical Tool and Haptic Feedback </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hamidreza%20Hoshyarmanesh">Hamidreza Hoshyarmanesh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sanju%20Lama"> Sanju Lama</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Garnette%20R.%20Sutherland"> Garnette R. This research introduces the design and development of a microsurgery-specific end-effector, a gimbal mechanism possessing 4 passive and 1 active DOFs, equipped with a bipolar forceps and haptic feedback. The robust gimbal structure is comprised of three light-weight links/joint, pitch, yaw, and roll, each consisting of low-friction support and a 2-channel accurate optical position sensor. The third link, which provides the tool roll, was specifically designed to grip the tool prongs and accommodate a low mass geared actuator together with a miniaturized capstan-rope mechanism. The actuator is able to generate delicate torques, using a threaded cylindrical capstan, to emulate the sense of pinch/coagulation during conventional microsurgery. While the tool left prong is fixed to the rolling link, the right prong bears a miniaturized drum sector with a large diameter to expand the force scale and resolution. The drum transmits the actuator output torque to the right prong and generates haptic force feedback at the tool level. The tool is also equipped with a hall-effect sensor and magnet bar installed vis-à-vis on the inner side of the two prongs to measure the tooltip distance and provide an analogue signal to the control system. We believe that such a haptic end-effector could significantly increase the accuracy of telerobotic surgery and help avoid high forces that are known to cause bleeding/injury. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=end-effector" title="end-effector">end-effector</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=force%20generation" title=" force generation"> force generation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=haptic%20interface" title=" haptic interface"> haptic interface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=robotic%20surgery" title=" robotic surgery"> robotic surgery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=surgical%20tool" title=" surgical tool"> surgical tool</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tele-operation" title=" tele-operation"> tele-operation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120027/a-microsurgery-specific-end-effector-equipped-with-a-bipolar-surgical-tool-and-haptic-feedback" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120027.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">118</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> A Forearm-Wrist Rehabilitation Module for Stroke and Spinal Cord Injuries</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vahid%20Mehrabi">Vahid Mehrabi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Iman%20Sharifi"> Iman Sharifi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=H.%20A.%20Talebi"> H. Uniform practical asymptotic stability is achieved at the torque control level first. The desired speed of gimbals and the acceleration of the spin wheel to produce the required torque are then calculated by a velocity-based steering law and tracked at the PMSM speed-control level by designing a speed-tracking controller with compensation for the vibration caused by eccentricity and imbalance due to mechanical imperfection in the DGVSCMG. Uniform practical asymptotic stability of the overall system is ensured by loan relying on the analysis of the resulting cascaded system.
