without which it is impossible to think of human life. That is why the investigation of the Earth's rotation is very important, and it has a long history of study. The invention of quartz clocks in the 1930s, atomic time in the 1950s, and the introduction of modern technology into astronomic observation in recent years resulted in rapid development of the study of Earth’s rotation. The theory of the Earth's rotation, however, has not been up to the high level of astronomic observation due to the limitation of time. As a typical example, we can take the problems that cover the instabilities of the Earth’s rotation, proved completely by the astronomic observations as well as polar motion, the precession and nutation of the Earth's rotation axis, which have not been described in a single equation in a quantificational way from the unique law of Earth rotation. In particular, at present the problem of what is the main factor causing the instabilities of the Earth rotation has not been solved clearly in quantificational ways yet. Therefore, this paper gives quantificational proof that the main factor that causes the instabilities of the Earth's rotation is the moment of external force other than variations in the relative atmospheric angular momentum due to the time limitation and under some assumptions or the moment of inertia of the Earth’s body. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=atmospheric%20angular%20momentum" title="atmospheric angular momentum">atmospheric angular momentum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=instabilities%20of%20the%20earth%E2%80%99s%20rotation" title=" instabilities of the earth’s rotation"> instabilities of the earth’s rotation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=law%20of%20the%20earth%E2%80%99s%20rotation%20change" title=" law of the earth’s rotation change"> law of the earth’s rotation change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=moment%20of%20inertia%20of%20the%20earth" title=" moment of inertia of the earth"> moment of inertia of the earth</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182768/main-factor-that-causes-the-instabilities-of-the-earths-rotation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182768.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">79</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">101</span> Periodic Change in the Earth’s Rotation Velocity</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sung%20Duk%20Kim">Sung Duk Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kwan%20U.%20Kim"> Kwan U. According to the previous investigation, atmospheric circulation is supposed to be a factor affecting the seasonal variations in the Earth’s rotation velocity in many cases, but the problem has not been solved yet. In order to solve the problem, it is necessary to apply dynamics to consider the Earth’s spatial motion, rotation, and change of shape of the Earth (movement of materials in and out of the Earth and change of the Earth’s figure) at the same time and in interrelation to the accuracy of post-Newtonian approximation regarding the Earth body as a system of mass points because the stability of the Earth’s rotation angular velocity is in the range of 10⁻⁸~10⁻⁹. For it, the equation was derived, which can consider the 3 kinds of motion above mentioned at the same time by taking the effect of the resultant external force on the Earth’s rotation into account in a relativistic way to the accuracy of post-Newtonian approximation. Therefore, the equation has been solved to obtain the theoretical values of periodic change in the Earth’s rotation velocity, and they have been compared with the astronomical observation data so to reveal the cause for the periodic change in the Earth’s rotation velocity. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Earth%20rotation" title="Earth rotation">Earth rotation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=moment%20function" title=" moment function"> moment function</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=periodic%20change" title=" periodic change"> periodic change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seasonal%20variation" title=" seasonal variation"> seasonal variation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=relativistic%20change" title=" relativistic change"> relativistic change</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182897/periodic-change-in-the-earths-rotation-velocity" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182897.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">73</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">100</span> On the Main Factor That Causes the Instabilities of the Earth Rotation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jin%20Sim">Jin Sim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kwan%20U.%20Kim"> Kwan U. The amount of the precession of the perihelion for Einstein’s theory of gravitation has been explained by means of the inverse fourth power force(inverse third power potential) introduced totheory of gravitation through Schwarzschild metric However, the methodology has a serious shortcoming that it is impossible to explain the cause for the precession of the perihelion in the planetary orbits. According to our study, without taking the cause for the precession of the perihelion, 6 methods can explain the amount of the precession of the perihelion discovered by Leverrier. Therefore, the problem of what caused the perihelion to precess in the planetary orbits must be solved for physics because it is a profound scientific and technological problem for a basic experiment in construction of relativistic theory of gravitation. The scientific solution to the problem proved that Einstein’s explanation for the planetary orbits is a magic made by the numerical expressions obtained from fictitious gravitation introduced to theory of gravitation and wrong definition of proper time The problem of the precession of the perihelion seems solved already by means of general theory of relativity, but, in essence, the cause for the astronomical phenomenon has not been successfully explained for astronomy yet. The right solution to the problem comes from generalized theory of gravitation. Therefore, in this paper, it has been shown that by means of Schwarzschild field and the physical quantities of relativistic Lagrangian redflected in it, fictitious gravitation is not the main factor which can cause the perihelion to precess in the planetary orbits. In addition to it, it has been shown that the main factor which can cause the perihelion to precess in the planetary orbits is the inverse third power force existing really in the relativistic region in the Solar system. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inverse%20third%20power%20force" title="inverse third power force">inverse third power force</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=precession%20of%20the%20perihelion" title=" precession of the perihelion"> precession of the perihelion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fictitious%20gravitation" title=" fictitious gravitation"> fictitious gravitation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=planetary%20orbits" title=" planetary orbits"> planetary orbits</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192598/causes-for-the-precession-of-the-perihelion-in-the-planetary-orbits" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192598.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">12</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">96</span> High-Quality Flavor of Black Belly Pork under Lightning Corona Discharge Using Tesla Coil for High Voltage Education</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kyung-Hoon%20Jang">Kyung-Hoon Jang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jae-Hyo%20Park"> Jae-Hyo Park</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kwang-Yeop%20Jang"> Kwang-Yeop Jang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dongjin%20Kim"> Dongjin Kim</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit designed by inventor Nikola Tesla in 1891. It is used to produce high voltage, low current and high frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla experimented with a number of different configurations consisting of two or sometimes three coupled resonant electric circuits. This paper focuses on development and high voltage education to apply a Tesla coil to cuisine for high quality flavor and taste conditioning as well as high voltage education under 50 kV corona discharge. The result revealed that the velocity of roasted black belly pork by Tesla coil is faster than that of conventional methods such as hot grill and steel plate etc. depending on applied voltage level and applied voltage time. Besides, carbohydrate and crude protein increased, whereas natrium and saccharides significantly decreased after lightning surge by Tesla coil. This idea will be useful in high voltage education and high voltage application. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corona%20discharge" title="corona discharge">corona discharge</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tesla%20coil" title=" Tesla coil"> Tesla coil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20voltage%20application" title=" high voltage application"> high voltage application</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20voltage%20education" title=" high voltage education"> high voltage education</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77120/high-quality-flavor-of-black-belly-pork-under-lightning-corona-discharge-using-tesla-coil-for-high-voltage-education" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77120.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">328</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">95</span> Study on Network-Based Technology for Detecting Potentially Malicious Websites</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Byung-Ik%20Kim">Byung-Ik Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hong-Koo%20Kang"> Hong-Koo Kang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tae-Jin%20Lee"> Tae-Jin Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hae-Ryong%20Park"> Hae-Ryong Park</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Cyber terrors against specific enterprises or countries have been increasing recently. Such attacks against specific targets are called advanced persistent threat (APT), and they are giving rise to serious social problems. The malicious behaviors of APT attacks mostly affect websites and penetrate enterprise networks to perform malevolent acts. Although many enterprises invest heavily in security to defend against such APT threats, they recognize the APT attacks only after the latter are already in action. This paper discusses the characteristics of APT attacks at each step as well as the strengths and weaknesses of existing malicious code detection technologies to check their suitability for detecting APT attacks. It then proposes a network-based malicious behavior detection algorithm to protect the enterprise or national networks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Advanced%20Persistent%20Threat%20%28APT%29" title="Advanced Persistent Threat (APT)">Advanced Persistent Threat (APT)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=malware" title=" malware"> malware</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=network%20security" title=" network security"> network security</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=network%20packet" title=" network packet"> network packet</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exploit%20kits" title=" exploit kits"> exploit kits</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2429/study-on-network-based-technology-for-detecting-potentially-malicious-websites" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2429.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">366</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">94</span> A Study on the Possibility of Utilizing the Converter Slag as the Cement Admixture</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Choi%20Woo-Seok">Choi Woo-Seok</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kim%20Eun-Sup"> Kim Eun-Sup</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ha%20Eun-Ryong"> Ha Eun-Ryong</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Converter slag is used as a low-value product like a construction fill material and soil stabilizer unlike electric furnace slag and blast furnace slag. To this end, the pseudo-catalytic transesterification reaction using chicken manure biochar and waste cooking oil was investigated. Compared with a commercial porous material (SiO2), chicken manure biochar generated from 350 C showed better performance, resulting in 95.6% of the FAME yield at 350C. The Ca species in chicken manure biochar imparted strong catalytic capability by providing the basicity for transesterification. The identified catalytic effect also led to the thermal cracking of unsaturated FAMEs, which decreased the overall FAME yield. For example, 40–60% of converted FAMEs were thermally degraded. To avoid undesirable thermal cracking arising from the high content of the Ca species in chicken manure biochar, the fabrication of chicken manure biochar at temperatures ≥350C was highly recommended. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Trasesterification" title="Trasesterification">Trasesterification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Animal%20excreta" title=" Animal excreta"> Animal excreta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=FAME" title=" FAME"> FAME</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Biochar" title=" Biochar"> Biochar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chicken%20manure" title=" Chicken manure"> Chicken manure</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/85982/biodiesel-synthesis-using-animal-excreta-based-biochar-and-waste-cooking-oil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/85982.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">199</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">92</span> Resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to Daptomycin</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ji-Chan%20Jang">Ji-Chan Jang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Tuberculosis is still major health problem because there is an increase of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant forms of the disease. Most of the time, his male protagonists possess various and complex characteristics throughout the storyline of his work, making it interesting for the readers to analyze their actions in many different aspects. However, some critics argue that unlike male characters, Shakespeare’s female characters are rather more flat and one-sided, pointing out that they are either the extreme version of good or evil. Especially, it is a significant topic to discuss in the modern days, considering the fact that gender stereotype is now a sensitive issue. Starting from such argument, it is important to address their purpose of being in the play and suggest their meaning to the modern readers of today. In this context, this paper analyzes several female characters of Shakespeare’s work by closely examining their actions and lines. The characters analyzed are Ophelia from Hamlet, Cordelia from King Lear, Katherine from The Taming of the Shrew, Goneril from King Lear and Lady Macbeth from Macbeth. Nevertheless, some female protagonists of Shakespeare’s work do not fall in to this category and exceed the limitations of others. Therefore this paper proposes alternative characters such as Juliet from Romeo and Juliet and Portia from The Merchant of Venice that are rather more complex and difficult to include in just one category. By doing so, this paper critically analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of many female characters in Shakespeare’s play. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=female%20characters" title="female characters">female characters</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gender%20stereotype" title=" gender stereotype"> gender stereotype</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=William%20Shakespeare" title=" William Shakespeare"> William Shakespeare</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58070/the-analysis-of-female-characters-in-shakespeares-work-contrast-between-the-submissive-and-the-wicked" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58070.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">341</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">88</span> A Preliminary Study of the Subcontractor Evaluation System for the International Construction Market</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hochan%20Seok">Hochan Seok</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Woosik%20Jang"> Woosik Jang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seung-Heon%20Han"> Seung-Heon Han</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The stagnant global construction market has intensified competition since 2008 among firms that aim to win overseas contracts. Finally, to illustrate the capability of the proposed residual generation filter, numerical examples are performed for the discretized DC motor system having the multiple sensor faults. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=residual%20generation%20filter" title="residual generation filter">residual generation filter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finite%20memory%20structure" title=" finite memory structure"> finite memory structure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=kalman%20filter" title=" kalman filter"> kalman filter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fast%20detection" title=" fast detection"> fast detection</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35140/a-finite-memory-residual-generation-filter-for-fault-detection" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35140.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">698</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">84</span> An Experiment of Three-Dimensional Point Clouds Using GoPro</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jong-Hwa%20Kim">Jong-Hwa Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mu-Wook%20Pyeon"> Mu-Wook Pyeon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yang-dam%20Eo"> Yang-dam Eo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ill-Woong%20Jang"> Ill-Woong Jang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Construction of geo-spatial information recently tends to develop as multi-dimensional geo-spatial information. There are many ways to strengthen the engineering student’s ability to solve the assigned problem when they get a job. Korea National University of Transportation has developed an industry-oriented undergraduate research program (URP). An URP program is designed for engineering students to provide an experience of solving a company’s research problem. The URP project is carried out for 6 months. Each URP team consisted of 1 company mentor, 1 professor, and 3-4 engineering students. A team of different majors is strongly encouraged to integrate different perspectives of multidisciplinary background. The corporate research projects proposed by companies are chosen by the major-related student teams. A company mentor gives the detailed technical background of the project to the students, and he/she also provides a basic data, raw materials and so forth. The company allows students to use the company's research equipment. An assigned professor has adjusted the project scope and level to the student’s ability after discussing with a company mentor. Monthly meeting is used to check the progress, to exchange ideas, and to help the students. It is proven as an effective engineering education program not only to provide an experience of company research but also to motivate the students in their course work. This program provides a premier interdisciplinary platform for undergraduate students to perform the practical challenges encountered in their major-related companies and it is especially helpful for students who want to get a job from a company that proposed the project. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=company%20mentor" title="company mentor">company mentor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industry%20oriented" title=" industry oriented"> industry oriented</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interdisciplinary%20platform" title=" interdisciplinary platform"> interdisciplinary platform</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=undergraduate%20research%20program" title=" undergraduate research program"> undergraduate research program</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74494/development-of-industry-oriented-undergraduate-research-program" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74494.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">245</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">79</span> Online Measurement of Fuel Stack Elongation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sung%20Ho%20Ahn">Sung Ho Ahn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jintae%20Hong"> Jintae Hong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chang%20Young%20Joung"> Chang Young Joung</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tae%20Ho%20Yang"> Tae Ho Yang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sung%20Ho%20Heo"> Sung Ho Heo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seo%20Yun%20Jang"> Seo Yun Jang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The performances of nuclear fuels and materials are qualified at an irradiation system in research reactors operating under the commercial nuclear power plant conditions. Consequently, the mitigation of acceleration, lining displacement and stress were verified successfully. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=double%20deck%20tunnel" title="double deck tunnel">double deck tunnel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interim%20slab" title=" interim slab"> interim slab</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=3-dimensional%20dynamic%20numerical%20analysis" title=" 3-dimensional dynamic numerical analysis"> 3-dimensional dynamic numerical analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20joint" title=" seismic joint "> seismic joint </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33999/dynamic-analysis-of-double-deck-tunnel" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33999.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">382</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">73</span> Prevention of Preterm Birth and Management of Uterine Contractions with Traditional Korean Medicine: Integrative Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eun-Seop%20Kim">Eun-Seop Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eun-Ha%20Jang"> Eun-Ha Jang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rana%20R.%20Kim"> Rana R. In acute preterm labor, tocolytics are administered as the first-line medication to suppress uterine contractions but rarely delay pregnancy to 37 weeks of gestation. On the other hand, according to the Korean Traditional Medicine, PTB is caused by the deficiency of Qi and unnecessary energy in the body of the mother. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the benefit of Traditional Korean Medicine as an adjuvant therapy in management of early uterine contractions and the prevention of PTB. Methods: It is a case report of a 38-year-old woman (0-0-6-0) hospitalized for irregular uterine contractions and cervical change at 33+3/7 weeks of gestation. Past history includes chemical pregnancies achieved by Artificial Rroductive Technology(ART), one stillbirth (at 7 weeks) and a laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis. After seven trials of IVF and articificial insemination, she had succeeded in conception via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with help of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) treatments. Due to irregular uterine contractions and cervical changes, 2 TKM were prescribed: Gami-Dangguisan, and Antae-eum, known to nourish blood and clear away heat. 120ml of Gami-Dangguisan was given twice a day monring and evening along with same amount of Antae-eum once a day from 31 August 2013 to 28 November 2013. Tocolytics (Ritodrine) was administered as a first aid for maintenance of pregnancy. Information regarding progress until the delivery was collected during the patient’s visit. Results: On admission, the cervix of 15mm in length and cervical os with 0.5cm-dilated were observed via ultrasonography. 50% cervical effacement was also detected in physical examination. Tocolysis had been temporarily maintained. As a supportive therapy, TKM herbal preparations(gami-dangguisan and Antae-eum) were concomitantly given. As of 34+2/7 weeks of gestation, however intermittent uterine contractions appeared (5-12min) on cardiotocography and vaginal bleeding was also smeared at 34+3/7 weeks. However, enhanced tocolytics and continuous administration of herbal medicine sustained the pregnancy to term. At 37+2/7 weeks, no sign of labor with restored cervical length was confirmed. The woman gave a term birth to a healthy infant via vaginal delivery at 39+3/7 gestational weeks. Conclusions: This is the first successful case report about a preter labor patient administered with conventional tocolytic agents as well as TKM herbal decoctions, delaying delivery to term. This case deserves attention considering it is rare to maintain gestation to term only with tocolytic intervention. Our report implies the potential of herbal medicine as an adjuvant therapy for preterm labor treatment. Further studies are needed to assess the safety and efficacy of TKM herbal medicine as a therapeutic alternative for curing preterm birth. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a
