Ibn Qāniʿ has not attracted much attention from scholarsonly Khalīl Qūtlāy has authored a doctoral dissertation, now published in fifteen volumes, that comprises Ibn Qāniʿ\u0026amp;#39;s Muʿjam al-ṣaḥāba. In this essay I argue that Ibn Qāniʿ and his contemporaries relied on the chains of hadith transmission to extract the names of many Companions. My research also shows that in the eighth/ fourteenth century at least two presently lost biographical collections associated with Ibn Qāniʿ were in circulation: Kitāb al-Wafayāt, a catalogue of death dates of hadith transmitters, and Kitāb al-Tārīkh, an annalistic collection, which included many assessments of transmitter reliability. Qāniʿ (d. 351/962) was a traditionist and evaluator of transmitters, one of the founders of the genre of biographical dictionaries devoted to the Companions of the Prophet. Ibn Qāniʿ has not attracted much attention from scholarsonly Khalīl Qūtlāy has authored a doctoral dissertation, now published in fifteen volumes, that comprises Ibn Qāniʿ's Muʿjam al-ṣaḥāba. In this essay I argue that Ibn Qāniʿ and his contemporaries relied on the chains of hadith transmission to extract the names of many Companions. My research also shows that in the eighth/ fourteenth century at least two presently lost biographical collections associated with Ibn Qāniʿ were in circulation: Kitāb al-Wafayāt, a catalogue of death dates of hadith transmitters, and Kitāb al-Tārīkh, an annalistic collection, which included many assessments of transmitter reliability. Qāniʿ (d. 351/962) was a traditionist and evaluator of transmitters, one of the founders of the genre of biographical dictionaries devoted to the Companions of the Prophet. Ibn Qāniʿ has not attracted much attention from scholarsonly Khalīl Qūtlāy has authored a doctoral dissertation, now published in fifteen volumes, that comprises Ibn Qāniʿ's Muʿjam al-ṣaḥāba. In this essay I argue that Ibn Qāniʿ and his contemporaries relied on the chains of hadith transmission to extract the names of many Companions. My research also shows that in the eighth/ fourteenth century at least two presently lost biographical collections associated with Ibn Qāniʿ were in circulation: Kitāb al-Wafayāt, a catalogue of death dates of hadith transmitters, and Kitāb al-Tārīkh, an annalistic collection, which included many assessments of transmitter reliability. The study of the biographical works is important as it provides information on the transmitters of traditions, who are evaluated to assess their character, reliability in transmitting traditions, moral probity, and religious affiliations. It is on the basis of such information, derived from the biographical works, that a tradition can be classified as authentic, reliable, or weak.1 The evaluation of a reporter that is provided by the biographical literature directly affects the authenticity of a tradition he transmits since his status is the single most important factor in determining how a hadith is classified.2 It is due to its influence on the hadith literature that ‘ilm al-rijal is one of the disciplines that a jurist is required to study. In this paper, I intend to examine the provenance of the Shi‘i biographical lexica on the disciples of the imams (the rijal) and to propose possible reasons for the composition of these works in the eighth and ninth centuries. I will then consider the authentications (tawthiqat) of those who report traditions from the imams and compare and contrast the methods of authentication in both the early and later biographical works. The subject of the Kitāb al-Ṯiqāt is the Prophet’s sīra, the history of caliphs and kings, biographies of Companions, ḥadīṯ transmitters, legal theorists, theologians, and many others. In this brief article, an attempt is made to describe Ibn Ḥibbān’s approach to the sīra of the Prophet, in order to arrive at some general considerations on the relationship between ḥadīṯ studies and historiography. Before long, the Umayyad caliphs recognized the political impact of their sermons and institutionalized preaching and storytelling (qaṣaṣ) as a state office. Notwithstanding this fact, informal qaṣaṣ did not vanish altogether, sometimes giving voice to pious discontent with the ruling dynasty. In the present study, I demonstrate that during the Marwānid period qaṣaṣ was combined with judgeship and other official positions. A comparison with documentary sources suggests that during the same period the term qāḍī (judge) was not yet used, and it may have been retroactively grafted onto the Umayyad past by early ʿAbbāsid historical literature. Literary sources also imply the existence of regional hierarchies of quṣṣāṣ. During the second/eighth century, qaṣaṣ lost its significance to the professional collection and transmission of traditions (ḥadīth) for the needs of Islamic jurisprudence and exegesis. Abi Salih al-Samman is one of the Muslim transmitters (rijal Muslim) that has been criticized by the scholars of hadith from the time of al-‘Uqaily (d. 323/934) until the Ibn Hajar’s (d. 852/1449) period. ‘Abdullah narrated two hadith in Sahih Muslim and since Muslim b. al-Hajjaj (d. 261/875) placed his narration as the argumentation hadith (usul al-hadith), it has invited criticism among the scholars. Many debates among the scholars of hadith in determining ‘Abdullah b. Abi Salih’s stance and status originated from al-Bukhari’s critique of munkar al-hadith towards him and concluded by Ibn Hajar’s critique of layyin al-hadith or lenient in hadith against him. The polemic degraded the canonical status that has been achieved by the Sahihayn and has continuously been the subject of much criticism and debate among the scholars during the 14th century until the present time. Thus, it is not surprising to see var-ious references to their opinions in the early examples of different Islamic literary genres. For example, early ḥadīth collections include a great num-ber of traditions attributed to the Successors – which would later be called al-ḥadīth al-maqṭūʿ – alongside those attributed to the Prophet. This paper, focusing on the usages of al-ḥadīth al-maqṭūʿ in the early ḥadīth literature, is an inquiry into why the Successors’ opinions constituted such an important part of ḥadīth collections. It argues that the veneration of the Successors is derived from the common recognition that they were better qualified to understand religious texts than later generations and that even their personal opinions were either based on the religious texts or at least consistent with them.
