Australia already has automated giant trucks driving around the outback of Western Australia, perhaps the exact aesthetic and ideological opposite of the small Toyota Prius used by Google in test drives.</p><p>Mining company Rio Tinto uses huge self-automated trucks on mines in the Pilbara region of Western Australia that are programmed to drive themselves and navigate mine roads and intersections using sensors, GPS, and radar guidance systems. The trucks self-drive but are overseen by a controller in Perth, 1800 kilometres away.</p><p>"The biggest machine we have is equivalent to 107 737 jets by weight," said John McGagh, Rio Tinto's head of innovation. "They are very well instrumented and complex machines."</p><p>To get an idea of scale, the majority of the 900 trucks (known as an Autonomous Haulage System) used on the Pilbara sites are the equivalent of six fully loaded 737s. Built in the US by Komatsu, the trucks navigate routes and conditions using 200 sensors, including 32 on the engine, and utilise Cisco networking technology.</p><div id="adspot-300x250-pos3" class="ad adAlignRight" style="display:none;"> <small>Advertisement</small> <script> titan.requestAd.push("adspot-300x250-pos3"); </script> </div> <p>"If you are around as long as Rio Tinto has been, then you have to figure out what is coming down the track," Mr McGagh said at the Cisco-sponsored Internet of Things World Forum in Chicago last week. "Wars, recessions and changes in technology."</p><p>Since Rio Tinto's truck trials began in 2008, the driverless vehicles have clocked up more than 1 million kilometres in distance and carried more than 100 million tonnes of material.</p><p>"It has broken traditional mining methods," he said. </p><p>Emilie Ditton, head of Asia Pacific insights and worldwide mining, at analyst and research company IDC, said the mining industry's embrace of cutting-edge technology was not a novelty, but about the bottom line.</p><p>"Truck drivers were paid incredibly insane amounts and it was difficult to get people to run those trucks," Ms Ditton said. "There was a pure cost motivation to [adoption]. Australia is leading the world in what it is doing in this area mainly because of the incredible costs around [operations]. The other motivators are operational consistency. Unmanned trucks are about having predictable operational outcome."</p><p>Rio Tinto has facilities around the world and, for example, can track events in a mine in Mongolia from a Brisbane control room at just 0.1 seconds behind real time. But remote observation and control of facilities opens up other issues.</p><p>"What is important is the whole question of connectivity," she said. "Not just having connectivity but having it be consistent and having bandwidth at a reasonable enough cost to undertake this kind of monitoring. This is critical."</p><p>According to Ms Ditton, the post-boom mining industry is experiencing what the manufacturing industry went through a few years ago: the process of automation, of enabling data, and building systems to change the operation.</p><p>"It is an interesting time and a lot of change taking place in the industry," she said. "But what drives the mining sector is how it can get stuff out of the ground faster and to market quicker. Anything that delivers an improvement to the bottom line will be attractive. They are open to the way IT enables the operation in their business processes."</p><p>Mr McGagh said the mining industry's use of connectivity could be used to benefit broader society.</p><p>"It is incredible data and we didn't even know it was called the Internet of Things when we started doing this," he said.</p><p>"If I am taking the sensor data off my trucks and tying it into coordinates with great precision, and from that I understand the quality of the roads, then why can't you do that with the cars that are driving around [the city]?
