På baggrund af empiri genereret via forskellige forskningsmetoder diskuteres resultaterne i lyset af en fællesteoretisk forståelse af sekulære, religiøse og spirituelle aspekter i menneskelivet. I artiklen fokuserer vi i særlig grad på, hvordan det at blive mor kan aktualisere eksistentielle overvejelser og hvordan resonansen til samme aktualisering i forbindelse med døden, kan informere sundhedsvæsenets svangreomsorg. Den faglige baggrund For to år siden var der et møde i en international gruppe under Røde Kors. Emnet var, hvordan vi kan organisere hjælpearbejde på måder, der støtter den psyko-sociale genopbygning af lokalsamfund, hvor mange, måske alle, lider under reaktioner på de voldsomme oplevelser, som de har været udsat for under krig og forfølgelse. Det viste sig i løbet af mødet, at der ganske vist var mange bud på, hvad der måske kunne gøres, men ingen fælles begreber og ingen gennemprøvede og evaluerede metoder. Men der blev givet udtryk for, at der var et stort behov for hjælp til mennesker, der er voldeligt undertrykte og fattige – og at der var en mangel på egentlig viden inden for området.
