The work adopts a library research approach to deliver its substance. It starts by defining culture as a unique and total way of life of a people in a social group that defines and set the group apart from other social groups. Then, it delves into ideals considered to be indices of Nigerian cultural values. Television and culture are treated as symbiotic bed-fellows. To provide underpinning to the subject matter of the paper, the Media/Cultural Imperialism and Cultivation Analysis theories are set as theoretical footholds to the discourse that unfolds. The paper thus, submits that television is both functional and dysfunctional to Nigerian cultural. This implies that the impact of television is ambivalent: pro-social and anti-social depending on the prism one tends to base his/her argument. Pro-socially, television has served entertainment, information and education functions as well as engendering socialisation and family integration. Anti-socially, television has promoted indecency, obscenity, immorality, language pollution, disintegration from social life, interfamilial disruption, violence, crime, materialism, consumerism and cultural stereotyping. While the pro-social impacts are ennobling to Nigerian cultural values, the anti-social impacts debase the Nigerian cultural values.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Ubong Andem The accelerating process of globalisation and the increasing interconnections between cultures have led to an unprecedented challenge to modern Sociology, in that it has rocked the culture and values of several societies which Nigeria is not an exception. That foreign media contents have direct and powerful effects on culture and values systems of many people, is an assumption shared by the modernization theorists. The study is anchored on the theory of acculturation along with the acculturation hypothesis. Using the survey method to generate data, 300 students of the department were administered questionnaires based on simple random sampling and were retrieved for analysis. The results from the study revealed that the more exposure to Western television contents to identify Western television stars as models, also leads to improvement of local television movies in terms of quality and standard. The implication is the increase of Nigerian students' preference for local television product. In the end, however, the study posits that, the prevalence of Western television has led to dominance in the cultural sphere of the Nigerian society. It suggests that foreign cultural values and products will continue to reign supreme unless through policies formulation and implementation, media managers and practitioners as gate-keepers realise they have a role to play in putting an end to media imperialism affecting Nigerian cultural values.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Implications of Western Television Programmes on Cultural Values of Nigerian Students: A Study of Taraba State University Students","attachmentId":63489995,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/43220759/The_Implications_of_Western_Television_Programmes_on_Cultural_Values_of_Nigerian_Students_A_Study_of_Taraba_State_University_Students","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/43220759/The_Implications_of_Western_Television_Programmes_on_Cultural_Values_of_Nigerian_Students_A_Study_of_Taraba_State_University_Students"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="7966221" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/7966221/Impact_of_Western_Television_Programmes_on_the_Cultural_Values_of_Nigerian_Youths_by_Adagun_Azeez">Impact of Western Television Programmes on the Cultural Values of Nigerian Youths - by Adagun Azeez</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="15191225" href="https://independent.academia.edu/aadagun">Azeez Adagun</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Considering the prominence of TV as a visual medium, this study sought to know the influence of media imperialism and the claim that it has affected and undermined local Nigerian norms and values. It specifically examines the influence of Western media content on the cultural values of Nigerian youths using English Premier League (EPL) clubs supporters in Abeokuta-North Local Government Area (LGA) as a case study. The accelerating process of globalisation and the increasing interconnections between cultures involve an unprecedented challenge to modern sociology. The explosion of Western products (particularly American) across the globe has rocked the culture and values of several societies. The spread of these products has raised questions and concerns regarding United States’ dominance in the cultural sphere. Consequently, it has prompted many to charge the U.S. with a new form of colonialism − cultural imperialism. Thus, the need to apply cultural imperialism thesis as the underlying theoretical framework for the study. Finding out the Influence of Western TV programmes on the cultural values of Nigerian Youths would be impossible unless the investigation uses meticulous procedures that are systematic, imaginative, logical and accurate. For this study, the survey method was adopted because it provides the best means of collecting the views of youths regarding the influence of TV on their perceptions, ideologies and behaviours. The study sample comprising 30 youths in Abeokuta-North LGA was selected using three sampling techniques: stratified sampling, simple random sampling and convenience sampling. Interviews were conducted personally by the researcher to gather data from the field. In the process of the data analysis the researcher engaged in memoing and transcription of the data. The researcher then embarked on coding and developing category systems. Right from Wright’s influential theorization on the issue of media and culture, researchers have often returned a low score for the media. But studies which have adopted a comprehensive, stakeholders’ approach to the study of media and culture are few. Through a qualitative approach, this study attempted to examine the assessment of Nigerian media as cultural agents by stakeholders—audiences, producers, culture experts and cable vendors. Interviews and focus group discussions showed that the media in Nigeria promote cultural growth as they transmit cultural skills to newer generations and facilitate intra-national cultural contact through intercultural education. As they transmit cultural values, they also indirectly set the standard but the media alone cannot be expected to standardize culture. In their bid to please their audiences so as to be on the good page of the advertiser’s book, the media permit foreign programs thereby permitting cultural invasion. Backed by the advertiser’s money, the audiences have become a rather strong factor in the cultural programming decisions which producers make, and if blames are to be apportioned for cultural dysfunctions, the audiences therefore have a share.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"CULTURAL FUNCTIONS AND DYSFUNCTIONS OF MEDIA IN NIGERIA - AYOBAMI OJEBODE, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA","attachmentId":37199044,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/11779235/CULTURAL_FUNCTIONS_AND_DYSFUNCTIONS_OF_MEDIA_IN_NIGERIA_AYOBAMI_OJEBODE_UNIVERSITY_OF_IBADAN_NIGERIA","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/11779235/CULTURAL_FUNCTIONS_AND_DYSFUNCTIONS_OF_MEDIA_IN_NIGERIA_AYOBAMI_OJEBODE_UNIVERSITY_OF_IBADAN_NIGERIA"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="122739058" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/122739058/Western_Television_Programmes_and_the_African_Cultural_Identity_of_Nigerian_Youths">Western Television Programmes and the African Cultural Identity of Nigerian Youths</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="126283066" href="https://abuad.academia.edu/OlayiwolaAjisafe">Olayiwola Ajisafe</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">International Journal of Media, Journalism and Mass Communications (IJMJMC), 2016</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">There is a general trend of African cultural erosion among Nigerian youths. Majority of them do not take pride in anything Nigerian: fashion, food, language, music and literature. Their behavioral attitudes show poor African cultural orientation. This study therefore examined the impact of Western television programmes on the African cultural identity of Nigerian youths A quantitative survey research questionnaire was administered on 274 respondents drawn from Afe Babalola University and Ekiti State University to determine the impact of Western television programmes on the cultural values of Nigerian youths. Cultural Imperialism and Social Learning theories were applied to test a null hypothesis that Western television Programmes have no significant relationship on the cultural values of Nigerian Youths. Chi Square was used to test the hypothesis. Result showed that western television programmes have negative influence on the cultural values of Nigerian youths: 274/5 < 54.8, at 05 level of significance. Findings revealed that majority of youths watch Western television programmes for fashion and entertainment. Respondents agreed that Western television programmes glamourize risky behaviours: alcoholism, drug abuse and sexual promiscuity. The study recommends the promotion of African cultural values on Nigerian television. To achieve the set task, it adopts the historical approach to trace the evolvement of imperialistic tendencies in the Nigerian broadcast environment to the evolution of television in Nigeria. It contends that apart from putting the Nigerian broadcaster in a dilemma of some sort, the various forms of the phenomenon do not help in any significant way to integrate the rural populace into the mainstream of socio-cultural and socioeconomic growth and development of Nigeria and thus the prognosis of the situation is precarious for the Nigerian television media. It further argues that as a phenomenon, media imperialism will continue to recur in the foreseeable future because an enabling ambience needed for its displacement by local television broadcasting is yet faltering. Therefore, it suggests that a deliberate and concerted effort should be made to change the situation. Such effort should include better funding, investment in the development of home-grown media technologies, investment in high manpower development, innovative programmes and more specialized programming with indigenous flavours by both the public and private television outfits operating in the Nigerian broadcast clime.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Revisiting Media Imperialism: A Review of the Nigerian Television Experience","attachmentId":44830304,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/24498245/Revisiting_Media_Imperialism_A_Review_of_the_Nigerian_Television_Experience","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/24498245/Revisiting_Media_Imperialism_A_Review_of_the_Nigerian_Television_Experience"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="37135301" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/37135301/Programming_Content_of_Nigerian_Broadcast_Media_Towards_an_Indigenizing_Paradigm">Programming Content of Nigerian Broadcast Media: Towards an Indigenizing Paradigm</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="76533907" href="https://ibadan.academia.edu/KobloweObono">Koblowe Obono</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Programming Content of Nigerian Broadcast Media: Towards an Indigenizing Paradigm","attachmentId":57085819,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/37135301/Programming_Content_of_Nigerian_Broadcast_Media_Towards_an_Indigenizing_Paradigm","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/37135301/Programming_Content_of_Nigerian_Broadcast_Media_Towards_an_Indigenizing_Paradigm"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="106131533" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/106131533/Influence_of_Foreign_Television_Programmes_on_the_Westernisation_of_Nigerian_Youths">Influence of Foreign Television Programmes on the Westernisation of Nigerian Youths</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="279430253" href="https://independent.academia.edu/DAkarika">Daniel Akarika</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Television has been a very influential medium of mass communication, due to its audio and visual potentials. Scholars of communication have always researched into the influence of the various media of communication, particularly television on the society. These efforts provide useful information to individuals, groups and organizations that employ these media on how best to use them. The debate on whether television influences youth's attitudes and behaviour has attracted diverse views supported by different researches. It is on this basis that this study examines the influence of television on the westernization of Nigerian youths. It is noteworthy that there is a growing worry over the decline of the cultural values of Nigerian youth. This ugly situation is sometimes tied to the influence of foreign television programmes. The foreign programmes do not only undermine the cultural values of Nigerian youths, but also influence the youths' behaviour as well as the prevalence of foreign attitudes and habits among them. The study is driven by cultivation theory which suggests that heavy television viewing "cultivates" perceptions of reality consistent with the view of the world presented in television programmes. Some youth in Nigeria, considerably perceive that what they view on foreign television programmes is a reality, and to them, there is need to cultivate the habits, attitudes, behaviour and values as demonstrated in television programmes.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Influence of Foreign Television Programmes on the Westernisation of Nigerian Youths","attachmentId":105409124,"attachmentType":"docx","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/106131533/Influence_of_Foreign_Television_Programmes_on_the_Westernisation_of_Nigerian_Youths","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/106131533/Influence_of_Foreign_Television_Programmes_on_the_Westernisation_of_Nigerian_Youths"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":59120942,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":59120942,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_59120942" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
