This paper reflects on the first stratigraphic drawing of the banks and ditches of this earthwork, and place its construction mechanism in a chronological framework. Nine radiocarbon dates obtained at the site suggest that the earthwork was built in the late 14th or early 15th century. This suggests a relationship with the Ijebu Kingdom, which pre-existed the opening of the Atlantic trade but first became visible only in the Portuguese records in the 1480s. In June 2017, more earthworks were found but within the core of Ijebu Land. This most recent finding points to an extension of territory from the center to the outlying villages. One central question about this discovery of monumental architectures that was functional around the 14th century or before is in its mode of construction. Apparently, iron tools must have been used in the construction of ‘a 20m deep ditch that runs 180km in circumference.’ Thus, the discovery of iron-working sites around the vicinity of the earthwork is a pointer to this building process that is up till now shrouded in mystery. By comparing the chronology of Ijebu earthworks with the evidence of Iron working in south western Nigeria around the first half of the first millennium AD, it can be thought that the rise in polity triggered the knowledge of metallurgy in the region. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=archaeology" title="archaeology">archaeology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthworks" title=" earthworks"> earthworks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ijebu" title=" Ijebu"> Ijebu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metallurgy" title=" metallurgy"> metallurgy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79431/an-archaeological-approach-to-dating-polities-and-architectural-ingenuity-in-ijebu-south-western-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79431.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">244</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> Modeling of the Effect of Explosives, Geological and Geotechnical Parameters on the Stability of Rock Masses Case of Marrakech: Agadir Highway, Morocco</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Taoufik%20Benchelha">Taoufik Benchelha</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Toufik%20Remmal"> Toufik Remmal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rachid%20El%20Hamdouni"> Rachid El Hamdouni</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hamou%20Mansouri"> Hamou Mansouri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Houssein%20Ejjaouani"> Houssein Ejjaouani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Halima%20Jounaid"> Halima Jounaid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Said%20Benchelha"> Said Benchelha</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> During the earthworks for the construction of Marrakech-Agadir highway in southern Morocco, which crosses mountainous areas of the High Western Atlas, the main problem faced is the stability of the slopes. Indeed, the use of explosives as a means of excavation associated with the geological structure of the terrain encountered can trigger major ruptures and cause damage which depends on the intrinsic characteristics of the rock mass. The study consists of a geological and geotechnical analysis of several unstable zones located along the route, mobilizing millions of cubic meters of rock, with deduction of the parameters influencing slope stability. From this analysis, a predictive model for rock mass stability is carried out, based on a statistic method of logistic regression, in order to predict the geomechanical behavior of the rock slopes constrained by earthworks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=explosive" title="explosive">explosive</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=logistic%20regression" title=" logistic regression"> logistic regression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rock%20mass" title=" rock mass"> rock mass</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=slope%20stability" title=" slope stability"> slope stability</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71665/modeling-of-the-effect-of-explosives-geological-and-geotechnical-parameters-on-the-stability-of-rock-masses-case-of-marrakech-agadir-highway-morocco" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71665.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">376</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Climate Change Impact on Slope Stability: A Study of Slope Drainage Design and Operation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elena%20Mugarza">Elena Mugarza</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stephanie%20Glendinning"> Stephanie Glendinning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ross%20Stirling"> Ross Stirling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Colin%20Davies"> Colin Davies</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The effects of climate change and increased rainfall events on UK-based infrastructure are observable, with an increasing number being reported on in the national press. The fatal derailment at Stonehaven in 2020 prompted a wider review of Network Rail-owned earthworks assets. The event was indicated by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to be caused by mis-installed drainage on the adjacent cutting. The slope failure on Snake Pass (public highway A57) was reportedly caused by significant water ingress following numerous storm events and resulted in the road’s closure for several months. This problem is only projected to continue with greater intensity and more prolonged rainfall events forecasted in the future. Subsequently, this project is designed to evaluate effective drainage trench design within infrastructure embankments, considering the capillary barrier phenomenon that may govern their deterioration and resultant failure. Theoretically, the differential between grain sizes of the embankment clays and gravels, customarily used in drainage trenches, would have a limiting effect on infiltration. As such, it is anticipated that the inclusion of an additional material with an intermediate grain size should improve the hydraulic conductivity across the drainage boundary. Multiple drainage designs will be studied using instrumentation within the drain and surrounding clays. Data from the real-world installation at the BIONICS embankment will be collected and compared with laboratory and Finite Element (FE) simulations. This research aims to reduce the risk of infrastructure slope failures by improving the resilience of earthwork drainage and lessening the consequential impact on transportation networks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthworks" title="earthworks">earthworks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=slope%20drainage" title=" slope drainage"> slope drainage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transportation%20slopes" title=" transportation slopes"> transportation slopes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deterioration" title=" deterioration"> deterioration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=capillary%20barriers" title=" capillary barriers"> capillary barriers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=field%20study" title=" field study"> field study</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182423/climate-change-impact-on-slope-stability-a-study-of-slope-drainage-design-and-operation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182423.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">51</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Study of Physico-Chimical Properties of a Silty Soil </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Moulay%20Sma%C3%AFne%20Ghembaza">Moulay Smaïne Ghembaza</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mokhtar%20Dadouch"> Mokhtar Dadouch</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nour-Said%20Ikhlef"> Nour-Said Ikhlef</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Soil treatment is to make use soil that does not have the characteristics required in a given context. We limit ourselves in this work to the field of road earthworks where we have chosen to develop a local material in the region of Sidi Bel Abbes (Algeria). This material has poor characteristics not meeting the standards used in road geo technics. To remedy this, firstly, we were trying to improve the Proctor Standard characteristics of this material by mechanical treatment increasing the compaction energy. Then, by a chemical treatment, adding some cement dosages, our results show that this material classified A1h a increase maximum dry density and a reduction in the water content of compaction. A comparative study is made on the optimal properties of the material between the two modes of treatment. On the other hand, after treatment, one finds a decrease in the plasticity index and the methylene blue value. This material exhibits a change of class. Therefore, soil class CL turned into a soil class composed CL-ML (Silt of low plasticity). This observation allows this material to be used as backfill or sub grade. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=treatment%20of%20soil" title="treatment of soil">treatment of soil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cement" title=" cement"> cement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=subgrade" title=" subgrade"> subgrade</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Atteberg%20limits" title=" Atteberg limits"> Atteberg limits</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=classification" title=" classification"> classification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimum%20proctor%20properties" title=" optimum proctor properties"> optimum proctor properties</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/19154/study-of-physico-chimical-properties-of-a-silty-soil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/19154.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">472</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> Strength of the Basement Wall Combined with a Temporary Retaining Wall for Excavation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Soo-yeon%20Seo">Soo-yeon Seo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Su-jin%20Jung"> Su-jin Jung</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In recent years, the need for remodeling of many apartments built 30 years ago is increasing. Therefore, researches on the structural reinforcement technology of existing apartments have been conducted. On the other hand, there is a growing need for research on the existing underground space expansion technology to expand the parking space required for remodeling. When expanding an existing underground space, for earthworks, an earth retaining wall must be installed between the existing apartment building and it. In order to maximize the possible underground space, it is necessary to minimize the thickness of the portion of earth retaining wall and underground basement wall. In this manner, the calculation procedure is studied for the evaluation of shear strength of the composite basement wall corresponding to shear span-to-depth ratio in this study. As a result, it was shown that the proposed calculation procedure can be used to evaluate the shear strength of the composite basement wall as safe. On the other hand, when shear span-to-depth ratio is small, shear strength is very underestimated. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=underground%20space%20expansion" title="underground space expansion">underground space expansion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=combined%20structure" title=" combined structure"> combined structure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=temporary%20retaining%20wall" title=" temporary retaining wall"> temporary retaining wall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=basement%20wall" title=" basement wall"> basement wall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20connectors" title=" shear connectors"> shear connectors</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/86079/strength-of-the-basement-wall-combined-with-a-temporary-retaining-wall-for-excavation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/86079.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">143</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Effect of Compaction Energy on the Compaction of Soils with Low Water Content in the Semi-arid Region of Chlef</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Obeida%20Aiche">Obeida Aiche</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohamed%20Khiatine"> Mohamed Khiatine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Medjnoun%20Amal"> Medjnoun Amal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ramdane%20Bahar">Ramdane Bahar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Soil compaction is one of the most challenging tasks in the construction of road embankments, railway platforms, and earth dams. Stability and durability are mainly related to the nature of the materials used and the type of soil in place. However, nature does not always offer the engineer materials with the right water content, especially in arid and semi-arid regions where obtaining the optimum Proctor water content requires the addition of considerable quantities of water. The current environmental context does not allow for the rational use of water, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, where it is preferable to preserve water resources for the benefit of the local population. Low water compaction can be an interesting approach as it promotes the reuse of earthworks materials in their dry or very dry state. Thanks to techniques in the field of soil compaction, such as vibratory compactors, which have made it possible to increase the compaction energy considerably, it is possible for some materials to obtain a satisfactory quality by compacting at low water contents or at least lower than the optimum determined by the Proctor test. This communication deals with the low water content compaction of soils in the semi-arid zone of the Chlef region in Algeria by increasing the compaction energy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compaction" title="compaction">compaction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil" title=" soil"> soil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low%20water%20content" title=" low water content"> low water content</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compaction%20energy" title=" compaction energy"> compaction energy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156755/effect-of-compaction-energy-on-the-compaction-of-soils-with-low-water-content-in-the-semi-arid-region-of-chlef" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156755.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">110</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Analysis of the Accuracy of Earth Movement with Drone Surveys</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ra%C3%BAl%20Pereda%20Garc%C3%ADa">Raúl Pereda García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julio%20Manuel%20de%20Luis%20Ruiz"> Julio Manuel de Luis Ruiz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elena%20Castillo%20L%C3%B3pez"> Elena Castillo López</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rub%C3%A9n%20P%C3%A9rez%20%C3%81lvarez"> Rubén Pérez Álvarez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Felipe%20Pi%C3%B1a%20Garc%C3%ADa"> Felipe Piña García</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> New technologies for the capture of point clouds have experienced a great advance in recent years. In this way, its use has been extended in geomatics, providing measurement solutions that have been popularized without there being, many times, a detailed study of its accuracy. This research focuses on the study of the viability of topographic works with drones incorporating different sensors sensitive to the visible spectrum. The fundamentals have been applied to a road, located in Cantabria (Spain), where a platform extension and the reform of a riprap were being constructed. A total of six flights were made during two months, all of them with GPS as part of the photogrammetric process, and the results were contrasted with those measured with total station. The obtained results show that the choice of the camera and the planning of the flight have an important impact on the accuracy. In fact, the representations with a level of detail corresponding to 1/1000 scale are admissible, depending on the existing vegetation, and obtaining better results in the area of the riprap. This set of techniques is, therefore, suitable for the control of earthworks in road works but with certain limitations which are exposed in this paper. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drone" title="drone">drone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earth%20movement%20control" title=" earth movement control"> earth movement control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=global%20position%20system" title=" global position system"> global position system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=surveying%20technology." title=" surveying technology. Traditional quality control monitoring based on moisture-density tests neither reflects the variability of soil microstructure nor provides a direct assessment of structural property, which is the ultimate objective of the earthwork quality control. Since stiffness and strength are sensitive to soil microstructure and fabric, any independent test methods that provide simple, rapid, and direct measurement of stiffness and strength are anticipated to provide an effective assessment of compacted earthen materials’ uniformity. In this study, the soil stiffness gauge (SSG) and the dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) were respectively utilized to measure and monitor the stiffness and strength in companion with traditional moisture-density measurements of various earthen materials used in Thailand road construction projects. The practical earthwork quality control criteria are presented herein in order to assure proper earthwork quality control and uniform structural property of compacted earthworks. <p
