recipients of the 2019 Canadian Biogas Industry Awards were announced on March 21st, 2019 during the Networking Reception at the Value of Biogas East in Toronto, ON. The selected winners demonstrate leadership in the sector and the Canadian Biogas Association is pleased to recognize their positive contributions to biogas in Canada.</p> <h3>Biogas Champion – Scott Gramm</h3> <img src="https://biogasassociation.ca/images/uploads/documents/2019/value_of_biogas/Scott_Gramm.jpg" alt="{title}" class="floatRight" /> <p>Scott Gramm, Manager of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) at FortisBC has been a tireless RNG champion since 2010, playing a critical role in helping to develop and grow this fledgling industry. In addition to his fine work in the company, he has been a lynchpin in working with the B.C. Provincial Government, BCUC, other stakeholders and industry suppliers. In short, he has been the catalyst for getting this effort off of the ground. His efforts have also largely contributed to the favorable legislative and economic opportunities that now exist in British Columbia for the biogas industry. </p> <h3>Project of the Year – The Surrey Biofuel Facility</h3> <img src="https://biogasassociation.ca/images/uploads/documents/2019/value_of_biogas/Surrey_Biofuel_Facility.jpg" alt="{title}" class="floatRight" /> <p>Banning organics from landfills is a reality in some cities, provinces and states in North America. City of Surrey has pioneered and envisaged the waste management issue not as a problem, but as an opportunity. Through the P3 partnership, the City has installed state-of-the-art technologies and equipment to realize the City’s vision. In 2009, the City of Surrey established a progressive vision to fuel its waste collection trucks with renewable natural gas generated from the City’s curbside organic waste. To accomplish this, the City chose a Public-Private Partnership approach in order to select a team to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain the Surrey Biofuel Facility for a 25-year term. The consortium headed by Renewi Canada won the $67.6M Project. It is the largest facility of its kind in Canada and the first fully integrated closed loop organic waste management system in North America. The project will reduce 40,000 tons/year of CO2e between the CH4 emission avoidance in landfills and the switch from fossil to renewable fuel in the waste collection service.
