but beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then they understood that He did not bid them beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.<p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">Peter’s Confession of Christ<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/8.htm#27">Mark 8:27–30</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#18">Luke 9:18–20</a>; <a href ="../john/6.htm#67">John 6:67–71</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Jesus, having come into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, was asking His disciples, saying, <FR>"Who do men say that the Son of Man is?"<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And they said, "Some say John the Immerser; and others, Elijah; and others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And He saith to them, <FR>"But who do ye say that I am?"<Fr> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And Simon Peter, answering, said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And Jesus, answering, said to him, <FR>"Happy are you, Simon Bar-Jonah; because flesh and blood did not reveal <i>it</i> to you, but My Father Who is in Heaven.<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>And I also say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My assembly, and <i>the</i> gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><FR>I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven; and whatsoever you shall bind on the earth shall have been bound in Heaven, and whatsoever you shall loose on the earth shall have been loosed in Heaven."<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then He charged the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ.<p> <A name="22"></a><p class="hdg">Christ’s Passion Foretold<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/8.htm#31">Mark 8:31–33</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#21">Luke 9:21–22</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>From that time began Jesus to show to His disciples, that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and high-priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised up. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And Peter, taking Him aside, began to rebuke Him, saying, "<i>God be</i> merciful to Thee! this shall not be to Thee." <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But, turning, He said to Peter, <FR>"Get behind Me, Satan! you are a stumbling-block to Me; because you are not thinking of the things of God, but the things of men."<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Take Up Your Cross<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/8.htm#34">Mark 8:34–38</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#23">Luke 9:23–27</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then said Jesus to His disciples, <FR>"If any one wishes to come after Me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me;<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>for whosoever wishes to save his soul shall lose it, and whosoever shall lose his soul for My sake shall find it;<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>for what will a man be profited, if he gain the whole world, and suffer damage as to his soul?
