The laureates were the cultural theorist Stuart Hall and the dancers/choreographers Jérôme Bel and Pichet Klunchun. Against the stunning backdrop of <strong><a href="http://www.halles.be/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Les Halles de Schaerbeek</a></strong> in Brussels, Hall, Bel and Klunchun were handed their awards on December 9<sup>th</sup> by the ECF’s former President, Princess Margriet of the Netherlands. There is no award like it in Europe, and the event was arranged accordingly, with a performance at its heart which brought the message of the speeches vividly to life – a message summed up by current ECF President <strong>Princess Laurentien</strong> in her opening address:</p><blockquote><em><div class="quote"><blockquote>Culture is a fundamental human need: it is not diversity which threatens us, but the failure to embrace it. <a href="https://www.eurocult.org/files/uploads/docs/1111.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>(read full text)</strong></a></blockquote></div></em></blockquote><div class="video" id="video-1132"><p style="width: 300px; height: 300px">Routes opening video</p></div><p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"><img decoding="async" class="imgRight" id="image3" style="width: 241px; height: 157px; border-width: 0px" alt="Stuart hall prinses margriet at Routes" src="https://www.eurocult.org/files/uploads/images/1123.jpg" border="0"/>A giant in the field of cultural studies, <a onclick="viewAlbum('29')" href="#album29"><strong>Stuart Hall</strong></a> (video) was not a difficult choice for the Routes jury. Jamaican-born, but having moved to England in 1951, his eyes were opened early to the human realities of difference as post-war diasporas reshaped Europe’s cities. Chair of the <em>Routes</em> jury, Robert Palmer, praised <strong>Hall’s hugely influential work</strong> which has helped make sense of our multifarious, multicultural societies. <em>(Read interview with Hall <strong><a href="https://www.eurocult.org/uploads/docs/1414.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a></strong>.)</em></p><p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"> </p><p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"><img decoding="async" class="imgLeft" id="image4" style="width: 240px; height: 160px; border-width: 0px" alt="J茅r么me Bel prinses Margriet at Routes" src="https://www.eurocult.org/files/uploads/images/1122.jpg" border="0"/>The award for the work of <a onclick="viewAlbum('27')" href="#album27"><strong>Jérôme Bel and Pichet Klunchun</strong></a> (video) was a bit more unexpected. In their case, a specific artistic work drew the jury’s appreciation. A thoughtul, humorous dialogue between a French contemporary dancer (Bel) and a traditional Thai dancer (Klunchun), ‘Pichet Klunchun and Myself’ was lauded by the chair of the jury<strong> Bob Palmer</strong> for its <strong>‘deceptively simple yet innovative approach to diversity’</strong>. <em>(Read interview with Bel and Klunchun <strong><a href="https://www.eurocult.org/uploads/docs/1404.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a></strong>.)</em> Before presenting the awards, <strong>Princess Margriet</strong> spoke of her own experience of negotiating difference in her longstanding work with ECF and the Red Cross, emphasising the importance of <strong>starting from the human factor </strong>and showing real curiosity and interest in the other.  </p><em><div class="quote"><blockquote>I would like to congratulate the laureates and to thank the jury for having chosen artists and thinkers who are helping, each in their own way, to promote respect for the other. Their work shows us the richness of diversity. How terribly dull would life be without diversity! <a href="https://www.eurocult.org/files/uploads/docs/1147.pdf"><strong>(read full text)</strong></a></blockquote></div></em><p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750">In a political response to the award, <strong>Dutch Minister for European Affairs Frans Timmermans, </strong>acknowledged that ‘nothing works better in politics today than exploiting fear’ and appealed directly to the cultural and political sectors:</p><blockquote><em><div class="quote"><blockquote>We have a mission to convince those Europeans, honest people, decent people, not racist or xenophobic people, but all those Europeans who believe in fear. Who believe that somebody else is coming into their country and taking away their identity and taking away what they have. And this fear can only be addressed if we rekindle the spirit of change and the spirit of diversity. <a href="https://www.eurocult.org/files/uploads/docs/1130.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>(read full text)</strong></a></blockquote></div></em></blockquote><p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750">There was fire behind the words of <strong>Stuart Hall</strong>‘s characteristically modest address. He described cultural difference as ‘a hard taskmaster’:</p><em><div class="quote"><blockquote>Cultural diversity is the name we give to a certain kind of ‘learning’, which gives us insight into the inner landscapes of how other people live their lives, how they experience and dream their worlds. <a href="https://www.eurocult.org/files/uploads/docs/1148.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>(read full text)</strong></a></blockquote></div></em><p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750">We learn not only through the intellect but the body, he said – and its terrain is imagination. But ‘<strong>creative activity needs institutions</strong>‘, which themselves must be wary of becoming ‘part of the problem’.<strong>  </strong><strong>ECF Director Gottfried Wagner</strong> promised that there would be no let-up in the Foundation’s efforts to <strong>‘combat the politics of fear’</strong>.
