Foundation awarded the Routes Award 2009 for Cultural Diversity to two innovative voices in theatre, Borka Pavi膰evi膰 and Stefan Kaegi, who have inspired direct communication between vast varieties of people. </strong></p> <p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"> </p> <p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750">During the awards ceremonies in Brussels in January 2010, the <strong>EU Commission Representative Xavier Troussard</strong> applauded the two winners as sources of inspiration: "We must multiply those kinds of spaces, whether real or virtual, where individual citizens can experience for themselves the value of diversity." However he also admitted that the EU is very much just beginning its work to establish the cultural policies required in establishing a Europe that gets its strength through its diversity. <br class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"/></p> <p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"><br class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"/><strong>Borka Pavi膰evi膰</strong> (1947, Montenegro) stands as a symbol of defiance in truly difficult circumstances. In 1994, she founded Belgrade’s Centre for Cultural Decontamination to fight the homogenisation of culture taking place under the Milo拧evi膰 regime. As a creative space for cultural exchange, the centre has since supported thousands of independent artistic productions and public gatherings that aimed for the development of civil society in Serbia and the rest of former Yugoslavia. The Centre’s relevance only continues as Serbia takes its initial steps towards joining the EU. That’s the only way we can build a Europe:  changing it, by changing oneself </blockquote></div> <p class="yz87w0odxciwb6750"><strong>Stefan Kaegi</strong> (1972, Switzerland) is an international theatre-maker who confronts his audiences with the social reality of odd places by using real people playing themselves. For example, <em>Cargo Sofia</em> seats the audience in the back of a cargo truck driven by two Bulgarian truck drivers who present their version of Europe where some borders are indeed disappearing while others are just getting more rigid.
