The meeting is aimed primarily for archaeozoologists interested in the systematic study of fish bones retrieved from archaeological sites around the world, and also to archaeologists, ichthyologists, historians, ethnographers, and fishery biologists. To this end the conference is structured to encompass a multiplicity of approaches to the study of fish remains and their contribution to our understanding of how fishing, fish trade, fish consumption, biodiversity, ecology and human impact on aquatic environments have changed through time. Evidence from four different sites is presented: Vale Marim I (end of the seventh/beginning of the sixth millennium cal BCE) and Vale Pincel I (2nd and 3rd quarters of the sixth millennium cal BCE), both located on the southwestern Portuguese coast, and La Esparragosa and SET Parralejos (fourth-third millennia cal BCE), both located on the southern Spanish coast. The analysis of the lithic assemblages by means of use-wear analysis provided evidence of fish-processing activities. The analysis of the archaeological tools has been based on a renewed experimental framework for fish-related use-wear traces. Despite data being still scarce and fragmentary, this study points out the necessity of a more integrating approach, including traceological analysis in the framework of a broader research on prehistoric fishing.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Fish Resource Exploitation in the Southern Atlantic Coast of the Iberian Peninsula: A View From the Traceological Analysis of Flaked Stone Tools (Sixth-Fourth mill. cal BCE)","attachmentId":61931270,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/41775947/Fish_Resource_Exploitation_in_the_Southern_Atlantic_Coast_of_the_Iberian_Peninsula_A_View_From_the_Traceological_Analysis_of_Flaked_Stone_Tools_Sixth_Fourth_mill_cal_BCE_","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Unique palaeoenvironmental records? Their morphological and chemical properties provide excellent environmental and anthropogenic proxies. Otolith analyses are widely employed in modern fisheries studies, and have been increasing within archaeological and palaeoenvironmental research. This thesis investigates the use of otoliths in archaeological research, and evaluates the reliability of the data obtained from such analyses. The main objectives are to: (1) overview and synthesise the development and future prospects of otolith studies in archaeology; (2) investigate the reliability of archaeological fish otoliths as proxies for environmental change through the use of experimental archaeology; and (3) explore various applications of archaeological otolith analyses by applying experimental, documentary, isotopic, trace element and morphological methods to otoliths, thereby investigating what they can tell us about past environments, fish populati...

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Unique palaeoenvironmental records?
