It was typically a long stick or rod used by shepherds, travelers, and leaders. The staff is mentioned numerous times throughout the Bible, often representing authority, guidance, and support.

Shepherd's Tool

The staff was an essential tool for shepherds, used to guide and protect their flocks. In Psalm 23:4, David writes, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me" . Here, the staff symbolizes God's guidance and protection, offering comfort to the believer.

Symbol of Authority

In the context of leadership, the staff often represented authority and power. Moses' staff is one of the most notable examples. God used Moses' staff to perform miracles and demonstrate His power to Pharaoh. In Exodus 4:2-4, God instructs Moses to throw his staff on the ground, where it becomes a serpent, and then to pick it up again, turning it back into a staff. This act was a sign of divine authority and power vested in Moses.

Instrument of Miracles

Moses' staff was also instrumental in several miracles during the Exodus. In Exodus 14:16, God commands Moses, "As for you, lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it, so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground" . The staff here is a conduit of God's miraculous intervention, parting the Red Sea for the Israelites' escape from Egypt.

Symbol of Judgment

The staff could also symbolize judgment. In Ezekiel 20:37, God declares, "I will make you pass under the rod and will bring you into the bond of the covenant" . The "rod" or staff here is a tool of judgment and discipline, used to measure and correct the people of Israel.

Support and Guidance

In a more general sense, the staff was a symbol of support and guidance. It was a practical tool for travelers, providing stability and assistance on long journeys. This practical use is reflected in its symbolic meaning, representing God's support and guidance for His people.

Prophetic Symbolism

In prophetic literature, the staff can also carry symbolic meanings. In Zechariah 11:7, the prophet takes two staffs, naming one "Favor" and the other "Union," symbolizing God's covenant relationship with His people and the unity He desires among them.

Conclusion

Throughout the Bible, the staff serves as a multifaceted symbol, representing authority, guidance, protection, and judgment. Its presence in both literal and symbolic contexts underscores its importance in biblical narratives and teachings.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
