The term "horn" is derived from the Hebrew word "qeren" and the Greek word "keras," both of which can refer to the physical horns of animals, as well as metaphorical representations of strength, power, and authority.

Symbol of Strength and Power

Horns are often used as a symbol of strength and power in the Bible. This imagery is drawn from the natural world, where the horn is a weapon and a symbol of dominance among animals. In Deuteronomy 33:17, the blessing of Joseph is described using the imagery of horns: "His majesty is like a firstborn bull, and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even those at the ends of the earth." Here, the horns represent the power and might that Joseph's descendants will wield.

Representation of Kings and Kingdoms

In prophetic literature, horns frequently symbolize kings and kingdoms. The Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation use this imagery extensively. In Daniel 7:24, the ten horns of the fourth beast are interpreted as ten kings: "The ten horns are ten kings who will rise from this kingdom." Similarly, in Revelation 17:12, the ten horns are also identified as ten kings: "The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but will receive one hour of authority as kings along with the beast."

Altar Horns

The horns of the altar hold significant ritual and symbolic importance in the Old Testament. The altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense both had horns at their corners. In Exodus 27:2, the instructions for the construction of the altar include: "Make a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar are of one piece, and overlay it with bronze." The horns of the altar were used in various sacrificial rites and were considered a place of refuge, as seen in 1 Kings 1:50, where Adonijah seeks asylum by taking hold of the horns of the altar.

Messianic Imagery

Horns are also used in messianic prophecies to denote the strength and salvation brought by the Messiah. In Luke 1:69, Zechariah prophesies about Jesus, saying, "He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David." This "horn of salvation" signifies the power and deliverance that the Messiah will bring to His people.

Divine Protection and Exaltation

The Psalms frequently use the imagery of horns to express divine protection and exaltation. In Psalm 18:2, David declares, "The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." Here, the horn symbolizes God's strength and the protection He provides to His faithful.

Judgment and Destruction

Conversely, horns can also symbolize judgment and destruction. In Jeremiah 48:25, the horn of Moab is cut off as a sign of its impending downfall: "The horn of Moab has been cut off, and his arm is broken, declares the LORD." This imagery underscores the removal of power and the execution of divine judgment.

In summary, the biblical use of horns encompasses a wide range of meanings, from strength and authority to judgment and salvation. This multifaceted symbol serves as a powerful tool for conveying the complex themes of power, protection, and divine intervention throughout the Scriptures.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
HORNS OF THE ALTAR
(qare-noth ha-mizbeach):

1. The Brazen Altar:

These projections at the four corners of the altar of burnt offering were of one piece with the altar, and were made of acacia wood overlaid with brass (Exodus 27:2, "bronze"). In Ezekiel's altar-specifications their position is described as being on a level with the altar hearth (Ezekiel 43:15). Fugitives seeking asylum might cling to the horns of the altar, as did Adonijah (1 Kings 1:50), which is one proof among many that worshippers had at all times access to the neighborhood of the altar. On certain occasions, as at the consecration of Aaron and his sons (Exodus 29:12), and a sin offering for one of the people of the land (Leviticus 4:30), the horns were touched with sacrificial blood.

2. The Golden Altar:

The altar of incense, standing in the outer chamber of the sanctuary, had also four horns, which were covered with gold (Exodus 37:25).
