The burnt offering, or "olah" in Hebrew, was a sacrifice that was completely consumed by fire on the altar, symbolizing the worshiper's total dedication to God.

Old Testament Context

The burnt offering is first mentioned in Genesis 8:20, where Noah, after the flood, builds an altar to the LORD and offers burnt offerings of clean animals and birds. This act of worship and thanksgiving is met with God's promise never to curse the ground again because of man.

In the Mosaic Law, the burnt offering is detailed extensively in the book of Leviticus. Leviticus 1:3-4 states, "If one's offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to offer an unblemished male. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, so that he may be accepted by the LORD. He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, so that it may be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him." This passage highlights the requirement for the offering to be without blemish, symbolizing purity and perfection, and the act of laying hands on the animal, signifying the transfer of sin and the need for atonement.

The burnt offering was a daily ritual in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple, as commanded in Exodus 29:38-42. It was offered every morning and evening, demonstrating the continual need for atonement and dedication to God.

Symbolism and Purpose

The burnt offering served multiple purposes. Primarily, it was an act of worship and devotion, signifying the offerer's complete surrender to God. It also functioned as a means of atonement, as the burning of the entire animal symbolized the removal of sin and the restoration of the relationship between the worshiper and God.

The complete consumption of the offering by fire represented the idea of ascending to God, as the Hebrew word "olah" is derived from a root meaning "to ascend." This ascent symbolized the offering's acceptance by God and the worshiper's desire to draw near to Him.

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the concept of the burnt offering finds its ultimate fulfillment in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 10:10 states, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." Christ's sacrifice on the cross is seen as the perfect and final offering, fulfilling the requirements of the Law and providing complete atonement for sin.

The imagery of the burnt offering is echoed in Ephesians 5:2 , where believers are encouraged to "walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God." Here, Christ's self-giving love is likened to the pleasing aroma of the burnt offering, emphasizing His total dedication and obedience to the Father.

Conclusion

The concept of "burnt" in the Bible, particularly in relation to the burnt offering, underscores themes of atonement, dedication, and worship. It points to the necessity of a perfect sacrifice to restore the relationship between humanity and God, ultimately fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Burnt offering: Hebrew olah; i.e., "ascending," the whole being consumed by fire, and regarded as ascending to God while being consumed. Part of every offering was burnt in the sacred fire, but this was wholly burnt, a "whole burnt offering." It was the most frequent form of sacrifice, and apparently the only one mentioned in the book of Genesis. Such were the sacrifices offered by Abel (Genesis 4:3, 4, here called minhah; i.e., "a gift"), Noah (Genesis 8:20), Abraham (Genesis 22:2, 7, 8, 13), and by the Hebrews in Egypt (Exodus 10:25).
The law of Moses afterwards prescribed the occasions and the manner in which burnt sacrifices were to be offered. There were "the continual burnt offering" (Exodus 29:38-42; Leviticus 6:9-13), "the burnt offering of every sabbath," which was double the daily one (Numbers 28:9, 10), "the burnt offering of every month" (28:11-15), the offerings at the Passover (19-23), at Pentecost (Leviticus 23:16), the feast of Trumpets (23:23-25), and on the day of Atonement (Leviticus 16).
On other occasions special sacrifices were offered, as at the consecration of Aaron (Exodus 29) and the dedication of the temple (1 Kings 8:5, 62-64).
Free-will burnt offerings were also permitted (Leviticus 1:13), and were offered at the accession of Solomon to the throne (1 Chronicles 29:21), and at the reformation brought about by Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:31-35).
These offerings signified the complete dedication of the offerers unto God. This is referred to in Romans 12:1.
