but do not ye according to their works, for they say and do not:<Fr> <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span><FR>for they bind grievous and intolerable burthens, and impose them upon men; for one is your instructor <Fr><i>even</i><FR> Christ, and ye are all brethren.<Fr> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span><FR>Neither call <Fr><i>any man</i><FR> upon earth Father; for one is your Father, <Fr><i>who is</i><FR> in heaven:<Fr> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><FR>neither be ye called masters; for one is your master, even Christ.<Fr> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><FR>But let him that is greatest among you be your minister: and whosoever will exalt himself shall be abased,<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><FR>and whosoever will humble himself shall be exalted.<Fr><p> <A name=""></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><FR>But wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, nor suffer those that are entering to go in.<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-13.htm"><b>14</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye devour widows houses, and for a cover make long prayers: therefore ye shall receive the heavier judgement.<Fr><p> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites: for ye compass sea and land to make a proselyte, and when he is gained, ye make him more the child of hell than yourselves.<Fr><p> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you, <Fr><i>ye</i><FR> blind guides, who say, If any <Fr><i>one</i><FR> swear by the temple, it is nothing;<Fr> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><FR>but if any <Fr><i>man</i><FR> swear by the gold of the temple, <Fr><i>the oath</i><FR> is binding. Foolish and blind <Fr><i>creatures!</i><FR> for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>And, If any <Fr><i>one</i><FR> swear by the altar, it is nothing; but if any one swear by the gift upon it, he is bound.<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><FR>O foolish and blind! for which is greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifieth the gift?<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span><FR>He then, that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all <Fr><i>things</i><FR> upon it:<Fr> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><FR>and he, that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by Him that dwelleth in it:<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><FR>and he, that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by Him that sitteth upon it.<Fr><p> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe <Fr><i>even your</i><FR> mint, and anise, and cummin, but neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and fidelity: these ye ought <Fr><i>undoubtedly</i><FR> to practise, and not to omit the others.<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!<Fr><p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of rapine and intemperance:<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>thou blind pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside of them may be also clean.<Fr><p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who are like whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful without, but within are full of the bones of the dead, and all <Fr><i>manner of</i><FR> filthiness;<Fr> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>so do ye likewise outwardly appear to men <Fr><i>to be</i><FR> righteous, but within are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.<Fr><p> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the just,<Fr> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been concerned with them in <Fr><i>shedding</i><FR> the blood of the prophets:<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>so that ye are witnesses yourselves, that ye are the children of those who killed the prophets:<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>fill up then the measure of your fathers, ye serpents, ye brood of vipers:<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>how can ye escape the damnation of hell?<Fr><p> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/23-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>For behold I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes;
