Follow these tips to help you prepare for and cope with sudden loss of power.</p> </div> <div class="dfe-section" data-section="cdc_response_factors_steps"> <a class="onThisPageAnchor" id="cdc_response_factors_steps-carbon-monoxide-poisoning" name="Carbon%20monoxide%20poisoning" title="Carbon monoxide poisoning"><!-- --></a><h2 class="editor-block--title" id="heading-pchrrlbbye">Carbon monoxide poisoning</h2> <p>Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death if inhaled.</p> <p>When power outages occur during emergencies such as hurricanes or winter storms, the use of alternative sources of fuel or electricity for heating, cooling, or cooking can cause CO to build up in a home, garage, or camper and to poison the people and animals inside.</p> <h3 id="heading-kgwvn8dbyx">Never use a generator or other gasoline-powered engines inside your home.</h3> <p>CO is found in combustion fumes, such as those produced by small gasoline engines, stoves, generators, lanterns, and gas ranges, or by burning charcoal and wood. CO from these sources can build up in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces. People and animals in these spaces can be poisoned and can die from breathing CO.</p> <ul class="nested-list"> <li class="level-1">Never use a generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent.<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">When using a generator, use a battery-powered or battery backup CO detector in your home.<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">Never run a generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine inside a basement, garage, or other enclosed structure, even if the doors or windows are open, unless the equipment is professionally installed and vented. Keep vents and flues free of debris, especially if winds are high. Flying debris can block ventilation lines.<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">Never use a charcoal grill, hibachi, lantern, or portable camping stove inside a home, tent, or camper.<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">Never leave the motor running in a vehicle parked in an enclosed or partially enclosed space, such as a garage.<ul> </ul> </li> </ul> <h3 id="heading-ddapmiijzp">Heat or cool your home safely.</h3> <ul class="nested-list"> <li class="level-1">Never use a gas range or oven to heat a home.<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">If conditions are too hot or too cold, seek shelter with friends or at a community shelter.<ul> </ul> </li> </ul> <h3 id="heading-aiz_dcql4f">Know the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.</h3> <p>Exposure to CO can cause loss of consciousness and death. The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. Safe water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene includes bottled, boiled, or treated water. It happens when the body can't control its own temperature and its temperature rises rapidly. Sweating fails and the body cannot cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency care is not given. While electric fans might provide some comfort, when temperatures are really hot, they won't prevent heat-related illness.<ul> </ul> </li> </ul> <h3 id="heading-bqynww3oob">Protect yourself and others from cold temperatures.</h3> <h4 id="heading-cyycy2wyja">Prevent hypothermia.</h4> <p>Hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature) is a dangerous condition that can happen when a person is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. </p> <p>Know the signs and symptoms of hypothermia and what to do if someone shows signs of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a medical emergency. If you notice any signs, take the person's temperature. If it is below 95° F, get medical attention immediately! When there is not enough gasoline, people may want to take gasoline from one container and put it into another by siphoning. Siphoning is when you use your mouth or a pump to suck a liquid such as gasoline out of one container, such as a gas tank, through a funnel or tube and into another container.</p> <div class="dfe-block dfe-callout dfe-callout--standard"><div class="dfe-callout__icon" aria-hidden="true" role="img"></div> <h3>Warning‎</h3> <div class="dfe-callout__body"><div class="callout-desc">Siphoning gasoline can harm your health. This may happen if the gasoline or its vapors come into contact with a lit cigarette or static electricity.<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">Confusion, drowsiness, headache or problems concentrating from breathing gasoline vapors<ul> </ul> </li> <li class="level-1">Irritation of skin, eye or mucus membranes on contact<ul> </ul> </li> </ul> <p>Other possible injuries and illness from siphoning when you use your mouth for suction include:</p> <ul class="nested-list"> <li class="level-1">Lung damage, if gasoline is inhaled into the lungs (aspiration) during mouth-based siphoning<ul>
