class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, and set apart for the gospel of God&#8212; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>the gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>regarding His Son, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Through Him and on behalf of His name, we received grace and apostleship to call all those among the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: <p class="reg"> Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. <p class="hdg">Unashamed of the Gospel<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed all over the world. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>God, whom I serve with my spirit<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">a</a></span> in preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>in my prayers at all times, asking that now at last by God&#8217;s will I may succeed in coming to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>For I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other&#8217;s faith. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, how often I planned to come to you (but have been prevented from visiting<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span> until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks,<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">c</a></span> both to the wise and the foolish. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish,<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">d</a></span> just as it is written: &#8220;The righteous will live by faith.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">e</a></span> <p class="hdg">God&#8217;s Wrath against Sin<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>For since the creation of the world God&#8217;s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise!<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">f</a></span> Amen. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/1-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. For on whatever grounds you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>And we know that God&#8217;s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So when you, O man, pass judgment on others, yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God&#8217;s judgment? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God&#8217;s kindness leads you to repentance? <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God&#8217;s righteous judgment will be revealed. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>God &#8220;will repay each one according to his deeds.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">a</a></span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>To those who by perseverance in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, He will give eternal life. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, there will be wrath and anger. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Greek; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, first for the Jew, then for the Greek. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>For God does not show favoritism. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but it is the doers of the law who will be declared righteous. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So they show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>on the day when God will judge men&#8217;s secrets through Christ Jesus,<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span> as proclaimed by my gospel. <p class="hdg">The Jews and the Law<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>if you know His will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those in darkness, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth&#8212; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>You who forbid adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>As it is written: &#8220;God&#8217;s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">c</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>If a man who is not circumcised keeps the requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>The one who is physically uncircumcised yet keeps the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>A man is not a Jew because he is one outwardly, nor is circumcision only outward and physical. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/2-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>No, a man is a Jew because he is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Or what is the value of circumcision? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Much in every way. First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">a</a></span> of God. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God&#8217;s faithfulness? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar. As it is written: <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;So that You may be proved right when You speak <p class="indent2"> and victorious when You judge.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But if our unrighteousness highlights the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict His wrath on us? I am speaking in human terms. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Certainly not! In that case, how could God judge the world? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>However, if my falsehood accentuates God&#8217;s truthfulness, to the increase of His glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Why not say, as some slanderously claim that we say, &#8220;Let us do evil that good may result&#8221;? Their condemnation is deserved! <p class="hdg">There Is No One Righteous<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../psalms/14.htm">Psalm 14:1&#8211;7</a>; <a hlef ="../psalms/53.htm">Psalm 53:1&#8211;6</a>; <a hlef ="../isaiah/59.htm">Isaiah 59:1&#8211;17</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>As it is written: <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;There is no one righteous, <p class="indent2"> not even one. <p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>There is no one who understands, <p class="indent2"> no one who seeks God. <p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>All have turned away, <p class="indent2"> they have together become worthless; <p class="indent1"> there is no one who does good, <p class="indent2"> not even one.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">c</a></span> <p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>&#8220;Their throats are open graves; <p class="indent2"> their tongues practice deceit.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">d</a></span> <p class="indent2">&#8220;The venom of vipers is on their lips.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">e</a></span> <p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>&#8220;Their mouths are full <p class="indent2"> of cursing and bitterness.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">f</a></span> <p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>&#8220;Their feet are swift to shed blood; <p class="indent2"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>ruin and misery lie in their wake, <p class="indent2"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>and the way of peace they have not known.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">g</a></span> <p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>&#8220;There is no fear of God <p class="indent2"> before their eyes.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">h</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin. <p class="hdg">Righteousness through Faith in Christ<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../philippians/3.htm">Philippians 3:1&#8211;11</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, as attested by the Law and the Prophets. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>God presented Him as the atoning sacrifice<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">i</a></span> through faith in His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/3-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Certainly not! We have been saying that Abraham&#8217;s faith was credited to him as righteousness. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>In what context was it credited? Was it after his circumcision, or before? It was not after, but before.<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">c</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised. <p class="hdg">Abraham Receives the Promise<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../genesis/15.htm#8">Genesis 15:8&#8211;21</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world was not given through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>For if those who live by the law are heirs, faith is useless and the promise is worthless, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may rest on grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham&#8217;s offspring&#8212;not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is a pattern of the One to come. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But the gift is not like the trespass. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So then, if she is joined to another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law and is not an adulteress, even if she marries another man. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Therefore, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For when we lived according to the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, bearing fruit for death. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But now, having died to what bound us, we have been released from the law, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. <p class="hdg">God&#8217;s Law Is Holy<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of coveting if the law had not said, &#8220;Do not covet.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">a</a></span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So I discovered that the very commandment that was meant to bring life actually brought death. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>For sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through the commandment put me to death. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good. <p class="hdg">Struggling with Sin<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Certainly not! But in order that sin might be exposed as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So this is the principle I have discovered: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>For in my inner being I delight in God&#8217;s law. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me.<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>What a wretched man I am! Father!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God&#8217;s children. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ&#8212;if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him. <p class="hdg">Future Glory<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../2_corinthians/5.htm">2 Corinthians 5:1&#8211;10</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The creation waits in eager expectation for the revelation of the sons of God. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own will, but because of the One who subjected it, in hope <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until the present time. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>For in this hope we were saved; but hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he can already see? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But if we hope for what we do not yet see, we wait for it patiently. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. <p class="hdg">God Works in All Things<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../ephesians/1.htm#3">Ephesians 1:3&#8211;14</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Who will bring any charge against God&#8217;s elect? It is God who justifies. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died, and more than that was raised to life, is at the right hand of God&#8212;and He is interceding for us. <p class="hdg">More than Conquerors<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../psalms/44.htm">Psalm 44:1&#8211;26</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Nor because they are Abraham&#8217;s descendants are they all his children. &#8220;The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">d</a></span> that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/10-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>that if you confess with your mouth, &#8220;Jesus is Lord,&#8221; and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/10-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/10-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>It is just as the Scripture says: &#8220;Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">e</a></span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/10-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>For there is no difference between Jew and Greek: The same Lord is Lord of all, and gives richly to all who call on Him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/10-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>for, &#8220;Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">f</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/10-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>How then can they call on the One in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel: <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>&#8220;Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">a</a></span>? <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And what was the divine reply to him? &#8220;I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">c</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>as it is written: <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;God gave them a spirit of stupor, <p class="indent2"> eyes that could not see, <p class="indent2"> and ears that could not hear, <p class="indent1"> to this very day.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">d</a></span> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And David says: <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;May their table become a snare and a trap, <p class="indent2"> a stumbling block and a retribution to them. <p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, <p class="indent2"> and their backs be bent forever.&#8221;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">e</a></span> <p class="hdg">The Ingrafting of the Gentiles<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>I ask then, did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery?<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">f</a></span> Certainly not! However, because of their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But if their trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring! <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>in the hope that I may provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the whole batch; if the root is holy, so are the branches. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>You will say then, &#8220;Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will certainly not<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">g</a></span> spare you either. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Or why do you belittle your brother? Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother&#8217;s way. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>If your brother is distressed by what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.
