Hypotheses about the occurrence of famines are tested using the largest-existing database of time series of burials, covering northern Italy and part of central Italy, as well as a database of time series of wheat prices covering the whole of the Peninsula. The role played by food provisioning institutions is briefly detailed and a summary discussion of the causative factors of famines is provided. According to a survey made by the German historian Fritz Curschmann (in the histories, annals, chronicles, hagiographies, etc.), there are 68 references to food crises between the years 700 and 1100. However, these texts say much more about the reactions to hunger than on their circumstances or causes. e aim of this article is to analyze the actions of public o cials in the face of food crises in Gaul and Italy between the end of the h century and the late sixth century. Teleconnections between Environmental and Societal Change?, 2019</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">In recent years, medieval climate history has become the subject of interdisciplinary research by scholars and scientists throughout Europe. This research is an opportunity for historians of the Middle Ages to contribute insights gleaned from their work with the written historical record and offer the unique perspective of their own discipline. Moreover, the contribution of Italian historiography can both highlight regional differences compared to the rest of Europe and explain some epistemological aspects of the relationships between environment and history, such as different forms of adaptation in the face of rationing crisis. The case study of Florence in the first half of the fourteenth century focuses on these historical aspects and presents the opportunity for an interesting and relevant case of political-economic argumentation. Although documented natural events between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries (excessive rain, cold, flood) confirm the strong climate variability of this era, the famines before the Black Death struck were rationing crises triggered mainly by trade mechanisms. Faced with famine and shortages, the city of Florence managed to curb hunger by adopting rationing policies, creating special magistracies, and using communal purchases to control prices. This study outlines the accounts of these events in the chronicles of Domenico Lenzi and Giovanni Villani before discussing the causes and describing the material remedies that were introduced. And yet, famines have regularly been treated as distinctive national calamities, reinforcing the unity of a people through a shared calamitous experience, or ‘othering’ an imperial power or outside agency. The chapters in this volume explore various aspects of three catastrophic famines which struck mid-nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe: the Great Irish Famine (An Gorta Mór) of 1845 to 1850, the Finnish Famine of the late 1860s (referred to in this volume by the Finnish phrase Suuret Nälkävuodet – ‘Great Hunger Years’), and the Ukrainian Famine (commonly known as the Holodomor, ‘Death by Starvation’) of 1932 to 1933. In addition to providing new insights into these events, on international, national and regional scales, the overall volume contributes to an increased comparative historiography in historical famine studies, and responds in particular to calls from Irish scholars to ensure that the Great Irish Famine is set in a broader international context.
