According to ecclesiastical works, this guilt originated in Jews’ involvement in Christ’s death and was subsequently proved by the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem and by their exile. The main interest of this study is based on how the canon law and ecclesiastical legislation of the new established Archbishopric of Prague at the time of Black Death persecutions shaped the perception of the medieval Jewish community in the Bohemian lands (e.g., clothing regulation, Jewish-Christian public and private relations, prohibitions of Christian servants, wet nurses and midwives in Jewish households, etc.). Rhetorical violence that created an ideological frame for the negative representation and portrayal of Jewish community in the pre-modern era is illustrated by articles concerning Jews from the Provincial Statutes of Archbishop Ernest of Pardubice (Statuta provincialia Arnesti, 1349). The first Archbishop of Prague drew from an extensive library of medieval canon law, compiling texts from basic legal handbooks and from his episcopal predecessors. The selection of legal teachings about Jews and the combination of this material in one unified whole represents not only the official position of the local church, but also an ambivalent yet still compact supplement to the policies of the King of Bohemia and later Emperor Charles IV concerning his Jewish subjects. that challenged the transnational philanthropic ties of Jews. Beginning as a dispute between a creditor from Ottoman Palestine and Prague&#39;s chief rabbi, David Oppen heim, the affair soon took on interconfessional dimensions, engaging the proprietor of Prague&#39;s coffeehouse, a Jesuit censor of Hebraica, and the agents of the Habsburg monarchy. almost always writing in defence or celebration of the events. &quot; The exceptions to this rule, however, are illuminating. This ar ticle explores images produced for Christians that condemn Christian acts of violence against Jews. Although these are few in number, their existence complicates our understanding of medieval antiSemitism. The first part of the essay investigates an episode in a fourteenthcentury French chronicle, the pillage of the Jews of Paris in 1380. The second part examines depic tions of the fable of the murdered Jew, which date from the late thirteenth through the fifteenth century. Both narratives-one drawn from a historical event, the other grafted onto an ancient fable-portray the Jew as the innocent victim and the Christian as the treacherous assailant. I. Moore published his The Formation of a Persecuting Society in 1987, we have increasingly come to understand medieval society in terms of its treatment of its &#39;others&#39;: Jews, lepers, heretics and so forth.(1) New bureaucratic structures starting in the 11th century established themselves by persecuting these minorities. David Nirenberg added importantly to this analysis by showing the role of violence, especially symbolic violence, in enacting and policing these boundaries.(2) And Israel Jacob Yuval opened up another dimension of the historiography by showing how Jews and Christians shared a common language of violence and traded motifs back and forth over the religious barricades: Jews killed their families and themselves in the Crusades in imitation of Christian ideas of martyrdom.(3) Yuval also demonstrated how the ritual murder accusation against Jews played a key role in the production of Christian saints. For the victim-typically a child-to die at the hands of the Jews was to imitate Christ&#39;s passion. Violence by Jews was a necessary component in the Christian economy of redemption. Anthony Bale has productively built on these and other works in his brilliant study of the medieval iconography of violence. Drawing primarily-but not exclusively-on English materials, he significantly revises Moore by showing that images of violence were significant methods of inculcating Christian virtues of meekness and clemency. In a paradoxical way, to persecute the Jews was a way of enacting the Christian message of love, since the Jews had rejected that message with violence. Or, as Christopher Ocker has put it, a theology of love was just as responsible for the ritual murder accusation as a theology of hate.(4) Despite appearances to the contrary, Jews were powerful, while Christians were weak, as befit those who imitated Christ. Images of violent Jews reinforced Christians&#39; identities as victims and thus justified their own violent attitudes toward the Jews. And in some cases, this emotional economy operated without actual Jews, such as in England after the Jews had been expelled in 1291. Bale places emphasis on feeling, for he believes that &#39;if we wish to uncover how medieval people thought, we must take seriously how they felt&#39; (p. 11). As opposed to the Enlightenment hierarchy of reason over the emotions, the Middle Ages sought to inculcate feeling in its iconography, the primary means of communication when literacy was restricted to tiny elites. Love and hate were inextricably intertwined so that images aroused both of these emotions simultaneously and dialectically. Its extent can be ascertained also by the fact that this event triggered composition of numerous texts - in Latin, Czech and German, but also in Hebrew - which captured the experience of the pogrom from different perspectives. Six of such textual compositions exist in Hebrew and may be compared and contrasted in terms of the treatment of the event. They are anchored in various medieval Hebrew literary traditions, ranging from liturgical poetry (Et kol Ha-Tela of rabbi Avigdor Kara) to genuine historiography (Cemach David of David Ganz), and thus use distinct symbolic languages to describe the trauma of the pogrom. The same is true for the compositions in Latin and Czech, particularly for a corpus of five literary texts known as Passio Iudeorum Pragensium, which employs the Christian narrative models. Although the two sets of texts - in Hebrew and in Latin - emerged from distinct, even contradictory narrative traditions, they cannot be perceived as independent or unrelated. Rather, they are parts of a single discourse on the nature and purpose of the pogrom violence and strive to contain such a event, traumatic both for the Jews and the Christians. There are many examples of how the two sets of texts mutually interact, whether more indirectly, by employing the conflicting narrative traditions, or more directly, by referring one to another.
