Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in the field of GIS provides the three-dimension assessment of the earth surface. Morphometric analysis provides a quantitative description of drainage system. Morphometric analysis such as linear aspects in part of Tapi river basin covering Madhya Pradesh and some part of Maharashtra was carried out by using geoprocessing techniques. These techniques were used for extraction of river basin and its drainage network. Carto DEM data and ArcGIS software were used for the extraction of drainage and the Morphometric parameters and classified based on the formula suggested by Strahler (1964) [19]. The analysis of linear aspects of drainage basin reveals that the basin has mostly dendritic to sub dendritic drainage pattern with 7 th order stream while 1 st order streams are mostly controlling the basin. The Carto DEM was utilized to automatically identify and extract drainage network. Five types of drainage patterns were identified: dendritic, parallel, rectangular, trellis, and modified dendritic/trellis. Study conclude that remote sensing data (Carto DEM of 30 m spatial resolution) along with geoprocessing techniques proven to be a tool used for morphometric analysis and evolution of linear aspects of morphometric parameters. Bifurcation ratio of basin (1.54 to 5.32) showing that geologic structures moderately controlled the drainage pattern. Length of overland flow of the basin (0.209 Km) usually low and indicates that basin is showing high relief and slope.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Dr. behavior of surface drainage network is one of the important prerequisite condition for effective planning and management of water resources within the watershed. Morphometric analysis of a watershed is a crucial step in watershed development and management to understand and interpret the dynamics of drainage system of the watershed and is useful for interpretation of silent features of drainage network. A morphometric analysis was carried out to evaluate the drainage characteristics of Mohalkhad watershed which covers an area about 54 km2 in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh in Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). Geospatial technique/tool such as Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS was used to evaluate the linear, areal and relief aspects of morphometric parameters. RS and GIS technique is very helpful over the conventional methods that are too laborious and cumbersome. To carry out this study, Survey of India (SOI) toposheet of 1:50,000 scale and ASTER DEM (30 m resolution) data were used and analysis was carried out in ArcGIS 10.5 software. Total 21 morphometric parameters of Mohalkhad watershed were evaluated considering the linear, areal and relief aspects. The significance of each morphometric parameter with the hydrological behavior of the watershed is discussed in this study. IRS LISS III satellite imagery is used for this purpose. The topographic analysis of the area had done with the help of attribute information of different stream order of the basin. Result shows a close relation between drainage morphometric parameters and the terrain properties. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Morphometric analysis of drainage basins provides not only an elegant description of the landscape, but also serve as a powerful means of comparing the form and process of drainage basins that maybe widely separated in space and time(Easterbrook, 1993). A drainage area or basin can be defined as an area which contributes water to a particular channel or a set of channels. Surface runoff of any drainage basin provide information about potential of that river basin for irrigation, drinking water etc. surface runoff is calculated by basin properties like stream length, bifurcation ratio, basin area, drainage density etc. higher the drainage density high is the surface runoff which indicate high soil erosion. Terrain topography has been greatly affected by drainage system of an area and reveals much topographic information about that area. Terrain elevation of an area is indirectly proportional to the stream order of drainage system of that area; first order streams show most elevated part and last order stream show deepest part of a Basin. As well as drainage pattern is also greatly controlled by terrain properties like landforms, slope etc. In this paper the role of Remote Sensing and GIS is highlighted as a powerful technique for morphometric analysis of any drainage basin. GIS software can be used for digitizing and statistical calculations of basin area parameters like stream length, basin area etc. while remote sensing can be used for terrain analysis like slope, class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">A morphometric analysis of drainage pattern around the study area has been carried out, highlighting the Remote Sensing Geology and GIS technologies, presenting a comprehensive review on their applications to groundwater hydrology. Drainage density of a region depends on the climatic conditions, lithology, landforms and different stages of geomorphic cycle etc. Stream ordering was done for calculating bifurcation ratios, drainage texture, drainage density, texture ratio and infiltration number. The inferences from drainage pattern also indicate presence of structural disturbance in the area conforming to earlier geological studies in Singhbhum shear zone (SSZ). The results indicate that the study area has a high run off and low infiltration capacity signifying that the area needs attention for groundwater conservation and artificial recharging in order to maintain and improve groundwater conditions. GIS and image processing techniques can be used to define morphological characteristics and to investigate the characteristics of the basin. The present study focused on the morphometric analysis of Nandani river basin using RS and GIS techniques. The Nandani river basin has covered an area of 492 km2. For this study, all the satellite data is obtained from Bhuvan website and analyzed in ArcGIS software. Morphometric analysis of river basin was performed by determining the parameters like Linear Aspects, Basin Geometry, Drainage Texture Analysis, Relief characteristics. The drainage pattern of stream network from the basin have been observed as mainly dendritic type. Watershed boundary, flow direction, flow accumulation, flow volume flow ordering have been prepared using a hydrological tool and the slope aspect has been prepared using a surface tool in ArcGIS. The present study deals with quantitative assessment of Manair Basin, Telangana, India, based on IRS LISS III satellite data and Cartosat DEM 30m resolution data. Morphometric parameters of the watershed were assessed by computations of linear and areal aspect using standard methodology in GIS environment. ARC GIS software was utilized for morphometric component study and delineation of the watershed using Cartosat digital elevation model (DEM). In this study, the Manair basin, tributaries of Godavari River, has been selected for thorough morphometric analysis. The drainage area of the basin is 6668.76 km2 and shows sub-dendritic to dendritic drainage pattern. The study area is designated as Fifth order basin with the drainage density value being as 0.41 km/km2. Three sub-watersheds Upper Manair, Mid Manair and Lower Manair are also delineated within this basin to calculate the selected morphometric parameters, e.g., stream order, stream length, bifurcation ratio, drainage density, drainage frequency, drainage texture, form factor, circularity ratio, elongation ratio, etc. and their hydrological implications were discussed. The generated database of morphometric parameters can provide scientific material for site selection of water-harvesting structures and flood management activities in the basin.
