The name Havilah is associated with a land rich in resources and is also linked to several descendants of Noah, indicating its significance in biblical history.

Geographical Significance:

Havilah is first mentioned in Genesis 2:11-12, where it is described as a land rich in gold, bdellium, and onyx stone. The passage states: "The name of the first river is Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there." This description suggests that Havilah was a region of considerable wealth and natural resources, contributing to its prominence in the ancient world.

The exact location of Havilah is a subject of debate among scholars. Some propose that it was located in the Arabian Peninsula, while others suggest regions in Africa or Mesopotamia. The mention of the Pishon River, whose location is also uncertain, adds to the complexity of pinpointing Havilah's geographical setting.

Genealogical References:

Havilah is also a name associated with several descendants of Noah, indicating its importance in the genealogical records of the Bible. In Genesis 10:7, Havilah is listed as a son of Cush, a descendant of Ham: "The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca." This lineage places Havilah among the nations that emerged after the Flood, contributing to the repopulation of the earth.

Additionally, Havilah is mentioned as a descendant of Joktan, a descendant of Shem, in Genesis 10:29: "Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan." This dual mention in the Table of Nations suggests that Havilah may refer to different groups or regions, each with its own distinct lineage and territory.

Historical and Theological Context:

The land of Havilah is also referenced in the context of the descendants of Ishmael. In Genesis 25:18, it is noted that the Ishmaelites settled "from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt, as you go toward Assyria." This indicates that Havilah was part of a larger region inhabited by the descendants of Ishmael, further emphasizing its historical significance.

From a theological perspective, Havilah's mention in the early chapters of Genesis underscores the abundance and provision of God's creation. The richness of the land serves as a testament to the divine blessing bestowed upon the earth, reflecting the prosperity and potential that God intended for humanity.

In summary, Havilah holds a multifaceted role in the biblical narrative, serving as both a symbol of wealth and a marker of genealogical heritage. Its repeated mention across different contexts highlights its enduring significance in the biblical world.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Havilah
that suffers pain; that brings forth
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Havilah
(circle).

A son of Cush. According to one theory, it is to be sought on the southeastern extremity of the Black Sea; according to another, at the head of the Persian Gulf. See EDEN.

2. The other Havilah seems to have in Arabia. From the statement in 1 Samuel 15:7, that "Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah unto Shurm that is over against Egypt," it would seen to have been somewhere in the north-western part of Arabia; since, from the circumstances of this campaign, we cannot well suppose that it extended over a great tract of country.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
The sand region.
(1.) A land mentioned in Genesis 2:11 rich in gold and bdellium and onyx stone. The question as to the locality of this region has given rise to a great diversity of opinion. It may perhaps be identified with the sandy tract which skirts Babylonia along the whole of its western border, stretching from the lower Euphrates to the mountains of Edom.
(2.) A district in Arabia-Felix. It is uncertain whether the tribe gave its name to this region or derived its name from it, and whether it was originally a Cushite (Genesis 10:7) or a Joktanite tribe (10:29; Comp. 25:18), or whether there were both a Cushite and a Joktanite Havilah. It is the opinion of Kalisch, however, that Havilah "in both instances designates the same country, extending at least from the Persian to the Arabian Gulf, and on account of its vast extent easily divided into two distinct parts." This opinion may be well vindicated.
(3.) One of the sons of Cush (Genesis 10:7).
(4.) A son of Joktan (Genesis 10:29; 1 Chronicles 1:23).
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
HAVILAH
hav'-i-la (chawilah; Heuila):

(1) Son of Cush (Genesis 10:7 1 Chronicles 1:9).

(2) Son of Yoktan, descendant of Shem (Genesis 10:29 1 Chronicles 1:23).

(3) Mentioned with Shur as one of the limits of the territory of the Ishmaelites (Genesis 25:18); compare the same limits of the land of the Amalekites (1 Samuel 15:7), where, however, the text is doubtful. It is described (Genesis 2:11, 12) as bounded by the river Pishon and as being rich in gold, bdellium and "shoham-stone" (English Version of the Bible, "onyx"). The shoham-stone was perhaps the Assyrian samtu, probably the malachite or turquoise. The mention of a Cushite Havilah is explained by the fact that the Arabian tribes at an early time migrated to the coast of Africa. The context of Genesis 10:7 thus favors situation on the Ethiopian shore, and the name is perhaps preserved in the kolpos Aualites and in the tribe Abalitai on the South side of the straits of Babel-Mandeb. Or possibly a trace of the name appears in the classical Aualis, now Zeila` in Somaliland. But its occurrence among the Yoktanite Arabs (Genesis 10:29) suggests a location in Arabia. South Arabian inscriptions mention a district of Khaulan (Chaulan), and a place of this name is found both in Tihama and Southeast of San`a'. Again Strabo's Chaulotaioi and Chuwaila in Bahrein point to a district on the Arabian shore of the Persian Gulf. No exact identification has yet been made.

A. S.
