experience in group music therapy for individuals within an inpatient psychiatric milieu. Using a phenomenological method, six individuals hospitalized for mental illness described their experiences in group music therapy treatment. These responses resulted in 16 themes: releasing stress, a healing balm, concentration, safe space, shared experiences, mutual desire for support, the intrinsic value of music, music learning, coping with here and now/hospitalization, motivation/hope, connection to others, self-awareness, lessons for the future, value of listening and trust, self-expression, and negative experiences. These themes serve predominantly as therapeutic factors of the clients' music therapy experiences. Closer analysis of the clients' words reveals that each theme emerged through the prevailing therapeutic relationships-with music, therapist, other group members, self, or spiritual-within the music therapy dynamic. Our interpretivist study explored patient reflections through individual interviews with 15 hospitalized patients after a completed course of eight individual music therapy sessions that were flexibly structured in blended fashion utilizing a set of active and receptive music therapy methods. Our analyses yielded 8 themes, supported by 23 subthemes. These themes were grouped into three domains, capturing respectively participants’ praise for music therapy, the distress from which change emerged, and various perceived gains. Therapy (AMT) is an advanced model of music therapy practice in the United States. Inter Music Therapy (IMT) is one of four required training stages to becoming an analytical music therapist. IMT is an experiential process where two AMT trainees take turns being therapist and client to one another, while under the direct supervision of the AMT trainer. Music is an integral component throughout IMT. All clinical material addressed and processed in IMT is lived experience, rather than role-play. To date, there is limited research documenting the experience of IMT for the AMT trainee.
