In order to evaluate the potential for undertaking a technological approach to answer the complex question of Attic black gloss importation and imitation in Iasos during the fourth century BC, a pilot project was undertaken. This project involved the archaeometric analysis of a limited number of samples representative of the major fabrics recognised among the fourth-century BC assemblages. Some of these have surfaces partially or totally covered with red gloss. Samples were analysed using petrographic analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (SEM-EDS) and portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF). The results have shown that red and black gloss are very likely made from the same clay, revealing a scenario of technological relations between Attic and Atticising manufacturing traditions worthy of further investigation and more extensive archaeometric study.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Silvia Amicone"}],"contributor":[],"dateCreated":"2015-06-03","dateModified":"2020-09-01","datePublished":"2015-01-01","headline":"Amicone, S. gloss from Iasos offers interesting insights into the appearance of Atticising pottery at this site alongside vessels imported from Attica. The results have shown that red and black gloss are very likely made from the same clay, revealing a scenario of technological relations between Attic and Atticising manufacturing traditions worthy of further investigation and more extensive archaeometric study.","publication_date":"2015,,","publication_name":"In Gürtekin-Demir – Cevizoğlu – Polat – Polat, Keramos. The results obtained by conventional (scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe) and synchrotron (X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy) techniques indicate that the thickness, porosity or chemical composition of the different types of gloss cannot be used as the principal distinguishing factor. The size of quartz or feldspar crystals may well be a critical factor responsible for the matt effect in some samples, while the range of mixtures of iron compounds indicated by XRD and XAS could be the reason for differences in colour and reflectivity. The Fe L-edge XAS results in particular show that a correlation does exist between the oxidation state characteristics and the visual appearance. The Si, Fe and Al contents seem to further discriminate the different types of gloss that have differing visual appearances.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Black Gloss Pottery: Production Sites and Technology in Northern Etruria. Ethnoarchaeology and experimental archaeology, as well as more traditional archaeological research methods, are used to discern the processes involved. First, the pottery was categorized based on surface treatment. Next, ethnoarchaeological research was carried out in the village of Bardakçı in the province of Van (Eastern Turkey) to gain a more detailed understanding of ancient ceramic production techniques. This approach and subsequent experiments provided important insights into the technology that was used during the production of ancient Urartian pottery. The findings of the ethnoarchaeological work indicate that the practices of modern potters living in villages near Urartian settlements are similar, in terms of materials and methods, to the practices of the past.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"A Study of Urartian Red Glossy Pottery Production in Van, Turkey, Using Archaeological, Ethnoarchaeological and Experimental Archaeological Methods","attachmentId":65379174,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/38442072/A_Study_of_Urartian_Red_Glossy_Pottery_Production_in_Van_Turkey_Using_Archaeological_Ethnoarchaeological_and_Experimental_Archaeological_Methods","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Standardized patterns in the ceramic craft at Early Bronze Age Helike, Achaea, Greece by Dora Katsonopoulou
Dora Katsonopoulou

Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, 2022

This paper investigates the techniques of manufacture for ceramic vessels in the Early Helladic (EH) settlement of Helike, Achaia, and offers insights into the degree of standardization that determined pottery production in the Early Bronze Age (EBA) Peloponnese. Our research is based on an integrated program of analyses to ascertain the characterization of composition, provenance, and firing technology of ceramic samples representing a range of wares and vessel shapes from the site. Analytical methods employed comprise the following: thin-section petrography performed by optical microscopy, chemical analysis using WD-XRF, and ICP-MS methods and estimation of firing temperature and microstructure examination undertaken with XRPD and SEM respectively. The results led to the identification of four main and eight smaller fabric groups, and a certain number of loners based upon textural and compositional peculiarities. Two main groups in their CaO content correspond well with the petrographic assessments. The evaluation of X-ray diffractograms showed four different classes based upon mineralogical composition, and four main groups of firing temperatures clustering around 700 °C and 900-1100 °C. The results from observation of microstructure by SEM complement those of the XRPD groups. The microscope data, in confirmation of the macroscopic features, demonstrated that ceramic production at EH Helike employed standard models for crafting certain categories of vessel shapes but, simultaneously, permitted the use of individual technical choices at variance to the general rule.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Standardized patterns in the ceramic craft at Early Bronze Age Helike, Achaea, Greece by Dora Katsonopoulou","attachmentId":88980766,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/83730910/Standardized_patterns_in_the_ceramic_craft_at_Early_Bronze_Age_Helike_Achaea_Greece_by_Dora_Katsonopoulou","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The Importance of Archaeometric Analysis on Ceramics from Archaeological Excavations: The Example of Early Roman Glazed Ware from Tarsus and Troia
Billur Tekkok

In the archaeological excavations after the initial processing of pottery, pottery specialist can select ware groups for scientific analysis. This process may define different groups not detectable by visual investigation. This paper summarizes the analysis of early Roman glazed table ware at Tarsus and Troia. Analysis on Tarsus lead glazed products suggests that lamp and coroplast producers may have worked side by side with the potters who produced glazed ware. The differences of workshops by stylistic considerations was done by Hochuli-Gys, but after her work, new excavations brought about the possibility of new workshops in the Mediterranean and Aegean area. This paper also comments on the advantages of interdisciplinary work between archaeologists, chemists, geochemists and geologists for conducting archeometric analysis.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Importance of Archaeometric Analysis on Ceramics from Archaeological Excavations: The Example of Early Roman Glazed Ware from Tarsus and Troia","attachmentId":25642496,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/1836614/The_Importance_of_Archaeometric_Analysis_on_Ceramics_from_Archaeological_Excavations_The_Example_of_Early_Roman_Glazed_Ware_from_Tarsus_and_Troia","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Lund, J. 2006.
