and the man<MH120> became<MH1961> a living<MH2416a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>person<MH5315>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> planted<MH5193> a garden<MH1588> toward<MH4480> the east<MH6924a>, in Eden<MH5731>; and there<MH8033> He placed<MH7760> the man<MH120> whom<MH834> He had formed<MH3335>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Out of the ground<MH127> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> caused every<MH3605> tree<MH6086> to grow<MH6779> that is pleasing<MH2530> to the sight<MH4758> and good<MH2896a> for food<MH3978>; the tree<MH6086> of life<MH2425b> <i>was</i> also in the midst<MH8432> of the garden<MH1588>, and the tree<MH6086> of the knowledge<MH1847> of good<MH2896b> and evil<MH7451b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now a river<MH5104> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>flowed<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Eden<MH5731> to water<MH8248> the garden<MH1588>; and from there<MH8033> it divided<MH6504> and became<MH1961> four<MH702> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>rivers<MH7218>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>The name<MH8034> of the first<MH259> is Pishon<MH6376>; it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>flows<MH5437> around<MH5437> the whole<MH3605> land<MH776> of Havilah<MH2341>, where<MH834, 8033> there<MH8033> is gold<MH2091>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The gold<MH2091> of that land<MH776> is good<MH2896a>; the bdellium<MH916> and the onyx<MH7718> stone<MH68> are there<MH8033> <i>as well.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The name<MH8034> of the second<MH8145> river<MH5104> is Gihon<MH1521>; it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>flows<MH5437> around<MH5437> the whole<MH3605> land<MH776> of Cush<MH3568a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>The name<MH8034> of the third<MH7992> river<MH5104> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Tigris<MH2313>; it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>flows<MH1980> east<MH6926> of Assyria<MH804b>. And the fourth<MH7243> river<MH5104> is the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>Euphrates<MH6578>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> took<MH3947> the man<MH120> and put<MH5117> him in the Garden<MH1588> of Eden<MH5731> to cultivate<MH5647> it and tend<MH8104> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> commanded<MH6680> the man<MH120>, saying<MH559>, “From any<MH3605> tree<MH6086> of the garden<MH1588> you may freely<MH398> eat<MH398>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>but from the tree<MH6086> of the knowledge<MH1847> of good<MH2896b> and evil<MH7451b> you shall not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>eat<MH398>, for on the day<MH3117> that you eat<MH398> from it you will certainly<MH4191> die<MH4191>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> said<MH559>, “It is not good<MH2896a> for the man<MH120> to be alone<MH905>; I will make<MH6213a> him a helper<MH5828> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>suitable<MH5048> for him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And out of the ground<MH127> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> formed<MH3335> every<MH3605> animal<MH2421b> of the field<MH7704> and every<MH3605> bird<MH5775> of the sky<MH8064>, and brought<MH935> <i>them</i> to the man<MH120> to see<MH7200> what<MH4100> he would call<MH7121> them; and whatever<MH3605, 834> the man<MH120> called<MH7121> a living<MH2416a> creature<MH5315>, that was its name<MH8034>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>The man<MH120> gave<MH7121> names<MH8034> to all<MH3605> the livestock<MH929>, and to the birds<MH5775> of the sky<MH8064>, and to every<MH3605> animal<MH2421b> of the field<MH7704>, but for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>Adam<MH121> there was not found<MH4672> a helper<MH5828> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>suitable<MH5048> for him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> caused a deep<MH8639> sleep<MH8639> to fall<MH5307> upon the man<MH120>, and he slept<MH3462>; then He took<MH3947> one<MH259> of his ribs<MH6763> and closed<MH5462> up<MH5462> the flesh<MH1320> at that place<MH8478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>fashioned<MH1129> into a woman<MH802> the rib<MH6763> which<MH834> He had taken<MH3947> from the man<MH120>, and brought<MH935> her to the man<MH120>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then the man<MH120> said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“At<MH6471> last<MH6471> this<MH2088> is bone<MH6106> of my bones<MH6106>, <t><p class="indent1">And flesh<MH1320> of my flesh<MH1320>;
