The correct name for the Sherdukpen is Mey and the language Mey nyuk in the towns of Shergaon and Rupa. A related set of lects are spoken by the Sartang, a people have also been called ‘But Monpa’. Two other related languages which were formerly classified under the general rubric of ‘Monpa’, are Duhumbi and Khispi spoken in isolated villages north of Dirang among the Central Monpa. This paper presents information on the location of the different languages of the Mey cluster, notes on phonology and morphology as well as a comparative wordlist. It considers various claims that have been made about the external classification of the Mey languages; whether the lexical correspondences with the Bugun and Puroik languages are convincing evidence It has been used to cover a wide range of languages, which have nothing much in common other than a putative Sino-Tibetan affiliation. There is a spectrum of local publications in Arunachal Pradesh referring to the Monpa, conflating both anthropological and linguistic data. Monpa is a generic term for non-Tibetan-speaking peoples south of Tibet proper, and applies to a number of highly diverse peoples, and so should not be used for classification purposes. London, Routledge: 213-242.</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Northeast India is the epicentre of phylogenetic diversity in the Sino-Tibetan family, with perhaps 20 independent Tibeto-Burman subgroups and as many as 300 languages spoken there. Politically, Northeast India is divided into the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Linguistically, it can be divided into Northern, Central and Eastern Border areas. The languages of this region remain relatively little-known and underdescribed.
