and he split<MH1234> wood<MH6086> for the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>, and set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH1980> to the place<MH4725> of which<MH834> God<MH430> had told<MH559> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>On the third<MH7992> day<MH3117> Abraham<MH85> raised<MH5375> his eyes<MH5869> and saw<MH7200> the place<MH4725> from a distance<MH7350>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Abraham<MH85> said<MH559> to his young<MH5288> men<MH5288>, “Stay<MH3427> here<MH6311> with the donkey<MH2543>, and I and the boy<MH5288> will go<MH1980> over<MH5704, 3541> there<MH5704, 3541>; and we will worship<MH2331c> and return<MH7725> to you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Abraham<MH85> took<MH3947> the wood<MH6086> for the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> and laid<MH7760> it on his son<MH1121> Isaac<MH3327>, and he took<MH3947> in his hand<MH3027> the fire<MH784> and the knife<MH3979>. So the two<MH8147> of them walked<MH1980> on together<MH3164a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Isaac<MH3327> spoke<MH559> to his father<MH1> Abraham<MH85> and said<MH559>, “My father<MH1>!” And he said<MH559>, “Here<MH2009> I am, my son<MH1121>.” And he said<MH559>, “Look<MH2009>, the fire<MH784> and the wood<MH6086>, but where<MH346> is the lamb<MH7716> for the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Abraham<MH85> said<MH559>, “God<MH430> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>provide<MH7200> for Himself the lamb<MH7716> for the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>, my son<MH1121>.” So the two<MH8147> of them walked<MH1980> on together<MH3164a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then they came<MH935> to the place<MH4725> of which<MH834> God<MH430> had told<MH559> him; and Abraham<MH85> built<MH1129> the altar<MH4196> there<MH8033> and arranged<MH6186a> the wood<MH6086>, and bound<MH6123> his son<MH1121> Isaac<MH3327> and laid<MH7760> him on the altar<MH4196>, on top<MH4605> of the wood<MH6086>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And Abraham<MH85> reached<MH7971> out<MH7971> with his hand<MH3027> and took<MH3947> the knife<MH3979> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>slaughter<MH7819> his son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> called<MH7121> to him from heaven<MH8064> and said<MH559>, “Abraham<MH85>, Abraham<MH85>!” And he said<MH559>, “Here<MH2009> I am.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, “Do not reach<MH7971> out<MH7971> your hand<MH3027> against<MH413> the boy<MH5288>, and do not do<MH6213a> anything<MH3972> to him; for now<MH6258> I know<MH3045> that you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>fear<MH3372a> God<MH430>, since you have not withheld<MH2820> your son<MH1121>, your only<MH3173> son<MH3173>, from Me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Abraham<MH85> raised<MH5375> his eyes<MH5869> and looked<MH7200>, and behold<MH2009>, behind<MH310> <i>him was</i> a ram<MH352a> caught<MH270> in the thicket<MH5442> by its horns<MH7161>; and Abraham<MH85> went<MH1980> and took<MH3947> the ram<MH352a> and offered<MH5927> it up<MH5927> as a burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> in<MH8478> the place<MH8478> of<MH8478> his son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Abraham<MH85> named<MH7121, 8034> that place<MH4725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>The LORD<MH3068> Will Provide<MH7200>, as it is said<MH559> to this day<MH3117>, “On the mountain<MH2022> of the LORD<MH3068> it will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>be provided<MH7200>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> called<MH7121> to Abraham<MH85> a second<MH8145> time<MH8145> from heaven<MH8064>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>and said<MH559>, “By Myself I have sworn<MH7650>, declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, because<MH3588, 3282> you have done<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> and have not withheld<MH2820> your son<MH1121>, your only<MH3173> son<MH3173>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>indeed<MH3588> I will greatly<MH1288> bless<MH1288> you, and I will greatly<MH7235a> multiply<MH7235a> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>seed<MH2233> as the stars<MH3556> of the heavens<MH8064> and as the sand<MH2344>, which<MH834> is on the seashore<MH3220, 8193>; and your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>seed<MH2233> shall possess<MH3423> the gate<MH8179> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>their enemies<MH340>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>seed<MH2233> all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471> of the earth<MH776> shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>be blessed<MH1288>, because<MH6118, 834> you have obeyed<MH8085> My voice<MH6963>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So Abraham<MH85> returned<MH7725> to his young<MH5288> men<MH5288>, and they got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and went<MH1980> together<MH3164a> to Beersheba<MH884>; and Abraham<MH85> lived<MH3427> in Beersheba<MH884>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> after<MH310> these<MH428> things<MH1697>, that Abraham<MH85> was told<MH5046>, saying<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, Milcah<MH4435> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>also<MH1571> has borne<MH3205> children<MH1121> to your brother<MH251> Nahor<MH5152>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Uz<MH5780> his firstborn<MH1060>, Buz<MH938> his brother<MH251>, Kemuel<MH7055> (the father<MH1> of Aram<MH758>), <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Chesed<MH3777>, Hazo<MH2375>, Pildash<MH6394>, Jidlaph<MH3044>, and Bethuel<MH1328a>”— <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/22-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>and <i>it was</i> Bethuel<MH1328a> <i>who</i> fathered<MH3205> Rebekah<MH7259>.
