area north of the Frederikshkbs isblink are streaky gneisses, massive tonalites and 'supracrustals'. The gneisses are thought to be the parent rocks of the tonalite and can be seen to merge into tonalite across a narrow zone of nebulite. RbSr whole rock points from samples of gneiss and tonalite fall on a common isochron with an age of 2662 f 116 m.y. (20) and initial ratio of 0.7032 ,+, OQOO8 (2a) (half-life of *'Rb = 50 b.y.). The uncertainties in the isochron could mask small age and initial ratio differences between the gneiss and tonalite. However, our present interpretation is that the isochron reflects a homogenization of Sr isotopes within and between the two rock types. The presence of two out of four K-feldspar points on the whole rock isochron is interpreted as evidence that the K-feldspar became closed to Sr isotope migration at the same time as the whole rocks. Subsequent local isotopic disturbance has resulted in a minor loss of radiogenic strontium from two of the samples. The interpretation of the K-feldspar as a product of the epidoteamphibolite facies metamorphism allows the conclusion that the whole rock-K-feldspar isochron is recording a Sr isotopic homogenization during this event and is not related to the formation of the gneiss or the tonalite. Rb-Sr closure ages of ca. 2515 m.y. for muscovite and ea. 1950 m.y. for biotite could be recording separate isotopic disturbances or the cessation of strontium isotope ovation as the minerals cooled through their characteristic blocking temperatures. The plutons, which are composed largely of tonalites with subordinate granodiorites and rare diorites mainly of medium-K calc-alkaline affinity, are part of a series of mid-Tertiary intrusives emplaced over ∼700 km E-W along the Periadriatic Zone. Major and trace element data indicate that gabbrodiorites originated by fractional crystallization of a primary mafic magma, but with a significant contribution of continental crust. REE patterns are steep and characterized by LREE enrichment, and a weak Eu anomaly, suggesting fractional crystallization of primary mafic magma. 87Sr/86Sr ratios indicate that on the basis of Sr isotopic composition an upper mantle melt contribution cannot be recognized. The 87Sr/86Sr vs.δ18O diagram demonstrates that all analyzed rocks plot near the centre of the Adamello pluton field. Tonalite plutonism was genetically controlled by previously subducted Mesozoic oceanic crust, metasomatized upper mantle wedge, and overlying continental crust. All analytical data obtained indicate that primary mafic magma was of olivine tholeiite affinity. Based on element modelling data it is reasonable to assume that a garnet peridotite, probably slightly metasomatized, was the source rock which was subjected to partial melting. The governing AFC processes resulted in crustal isotopic signatures due to crustal assimilation and melting which produced the most acid members of the tonalite suite. Petrologie und Geochemie der paläogenen Tonalite der östlichsten Periadriatischen Zone zwischen Ostalpen und nordwestlichsten Dinariden Die Plutone des Bachergebirges und der Karawanken liegen in den östlichsten Teilen der Periadriatischen Zone, die die Ostalpen von den Südalpen bzw. den nordwestlichsten Dinariden trennt. Es handelt sich um Tonalite, untergeordnet Granodiorite und selten Diorite mit kalk-alkalischer Affinität die als Teil einer Serie mitteltertiärer Intrusivkörper entlang der Periadriatischen Zone über ca. 600–700 km intrudierten. Haupt- und Spurenelemente belegen, dass die Granodiorite durch fraktionierte Kristallisation eines mafischen Magmas unter beträchtlicher Beteiligung kontinentaler Kruste entstanden. Die SEE sind durch Anreicherung der leichten SEE, recht steile SEE Kurven und eine schwache Eu-Anomalie gekennzeichnet, was auf die fraktionierte Kristallisation eines primären mafischen Magmas hinweist. 87Sr/86Sr-Daten können eine Mantelherkunft nicht nachweisen. Das 87Sr/86Sr-18O Diagramm zeigt, dass alle untersuchten Gesteine im Mittelfeld des Adamello-Plutons liegen. Der tonalitische Plutonismus wurde durch die subduzierte mesozoische Ozeankruste, metasomatisiertes Mantelmaterial des Mantelkeils und darüberliegende kontinentale Kruste kontrolliert. Alle analytischen Daten zeigen, dass das primäre mafische Magma olivintholeiitische Affinität hatte. Auf der Basis von Spurenelement-Modellierungen ist ein vielleicht leicht metasomatisierter Granatperidotit, der teilaufgeschmolzen wurde, als Quelle anzunehmen.
