It consists of a four-sided <span id="ref176506"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/prism-optics" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">prism</a> mounted on a small stand above a sheet of paper. By placing the eye close to the upper edge of the prism so that half the pupil of the eye is over the prism, the observer is able to see a reflected image of an object situated in front of the prism, apparently lying on the paper. He can then trace the image with a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/pencil-writing-implement" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">pencil</a>. In its original form the camera lucida was extremely difficult to focus properly, and a weak <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb" data-term="spectacle" href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/spectacle" data-type="EB">spectacle</a> lens was added between the prism and the paper.
