great concern to the global health community. Now-a-days, plants have been exploited as a powerful and potential source for medicinal drugs. Herbal drugs are mainly focussed as an alternative source against manifestations caused by various microorganisms due to the increasing resistance of existing antimicrobial agents. The present study attempts to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of the crude methanol extract of Ocimum gratissimum (Local name: Ram tulashi), Spondias pinnata (Local name: Amora), Terminalia chebula (Local name: Silikha) and Hedyotis pinifolia (Local name: Bon jaluk) against six Gram-positive bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Micrococcus luteus, Listeria innocua, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus) and three Gram-negative bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae and Enterobacter aerogenes) by agar well diffusion method. Methanol extract of all the plants under study were found to be effective against all the reference strains. Highest zone of inhibition was observed against B.subtilis (23mm of clear zone) followed by L. innocua (16 mm of clear zone) in case of Terminalia chebula. The highest antibacterial potentiality was exhibited by the methanolic leaf extract of T. chebula, followed by the aqueous fruit extract of T. bellerica. The leaf extract of T. chebula can be considered to be as equally potent as the most effective antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, kanamycin, ofloxacin and cephalexin. A sensitivity test performed with commonly used sensitivity test disks resulted in the appearance of multiple drug resistance phenotypes of the bacteria tested. A comparision of data in the inhibition zones of pathogenic bacteria showed that gentamycin, ofloxacin, kanamycin and tobramycin were effective against all of the bacterial strains tested.</p><div of curative agents that are used in many modern medicines. In the present study phytochemical analysis and in vitro antibacterial activities of the n-butanolic extracts of Terminalia arjuna, Cleome viscosa and Leucas aspera having ethnomedicinal uses collected from the Kadapa district were tested. The phytochemical studies of the extracts revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides in all plants. The extracts were subjected for screening of in vitro antibacterial activity against selected major human pathogenic bacterial strains like Bacillus substilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, and Staphylococcus aureus by agar well diffusion method. Methods: Phytochemical screening tests was conducted for five plant species and found that extract contains a variety of Phytochemicals like saponins, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides and reducing sugars and among which there is higher level of precipitation for phenol and flavonoids. As they are essential source of antimicrobial agents against pathogens, their extract were tested for its antimicrobial activity by well diffusion method using Nutrient agar against human pathogenic bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli. Results: The study plant extract of Xanthium strumarium(leaves, roots) and Mentha piperita(stem) had shown a strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and the plant extract of Ricinus communis(leaves ,stem, roots), Lpomea aquatica (stem)had shown antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Oldenlandia corymbosa hadn't shown antimicrobial activity for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
