BnF, département Bibliothèque-musée de l’opéra, <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b52514002x" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BIJOUX 219 Bis</a></figcaption></figure> <p> </p> <p>L’exposition <a href="https://www.operadeparis.fr/visites/expositions/les-bijoux-de-lopera?medium=&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7vz1roGdiwMVVj4GAB0tiBk0EAAYASAAEgLSaPD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Bijoux de scène de l’Opéra de Paris</em></a>, qui se tient jusqu’au 28 mars 2025 à la <a href="https://www.bnf.fr/fr/opera" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bibliothèque-musée de l’Opéra</a> au Palais Garnier à Paris, est l’occasion d’admirer de splendides accessoires de scène imitant à la perfection l’or et les pierres précieuses . Façonnés en laiton doré et en verre, ces couronnes, casques, colliers, ceintures et bracelets, issus des grands œuvres lyriques du XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle, reflètent notamment le goût pour l’antique des librettistes et des costumiers.</p> <p>Cette coiffe, formée d’un serre-tête orné de trois ombelles de papyrus, est composée d’une structure en laiton imitant l’or parsemée de pierres vertes brillant comme des émeraudes. BnF, Bibliothèque-musée de l’Opéra, <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb426793398" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESTAMPES SCENES Salammbo (18)</a></figcaption></figure> <p> </p> <p>Elle a été portée par la cantatrice <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/ark:/12148/cb13926819m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rose Caron</a>, <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53117865z/f1.item.zoom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interprète du rôle-titre</a>, lors des représentations de <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb396844549" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Salammbô</em> </a>en 1892, à l’opéra de Paris. Créé en 1890 à Bruxelles, l’opéra est l’œuvre du librettiste <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb11900715t#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Camille Du Locle</a> (1832-1903) qui eut fort à faire pour adapter le récit épique de Gustave Flaubert publié en 1862. L’œuvre est portée par la musique d’<a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8424127v/f1.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ernest Reyer</a> (1823-1909) qui s’intéressait à ce roman dès sa parution, véritable « opéra littéraire » selon les critiques de l’époque.</p> <p>Pour les costumes, l’Opéra fait appel à <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb148208163" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eugène Lacoste</a> (1818-1907), réputé ses recherches documentaires rigoureuses et pour ses esquisses détaillées dans la création des costumes et des bijoux. Lors de sa longue et prolifique carrière pour les grands théâtres parisiens, il a dessiné pour d’autres opéras inspirés de l’Antiquité tels que <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b84557116" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Aïda</em> </a>(1880) et <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb40916641x" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Sapho</em></a> (1884), <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb40916622n" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Salammbô</em></a> étant son dernier pour l’Opéra de Paris. Lacoste, que l’Opéra avait délaissé et auquel il a eu raison de demander son concours, s’est inspiré, pour les dessiner, des indications du roman, parfois assez précises […], mais le plus souvent de ses études particulières pendant le cours de sa longue carrière. Gestes et outils, quasiment inchangés du III<sup>e</sup> millénaire av. L’acquisition d’objets étrusques et italiques résulte aussi bien de la curiosité de voyageurs et archéologues occasionnels que de la passion de grands collectionneurs, en particulier au XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle, qui ont chacun à leur manière contribué à définir progressivement les spécificités des cultures matérielles étrusque et italiques par rapport aux productions grecques et romaines. monnaies celtiques, mal aimé des uns car considéré comme inférieur aux créations gréco-romaines mais adulé des Surréalistes, se complait dans la représentation des animaux. Ces cours ouverts à tous se déroulent en présence des collections, comme c’était déjà le cas en 1798. href="https://www.bnf.fr/fr/agenda/autour-du-catalogue-des-inscriptions-etrusques-de-la-bnf-de-dominique-briquel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BnF-Richelieu de 16 h 30 à 18 h 30</a>. Cette somme richement illustrée de 450 pages est le résultat d’un travail de plusieurs années mené par <a href="https://aibl.fr/c-francais/briquel-dominique/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Domnique Briquel</a>, étruscologue, latiniste et historien, sur les collections du département des Monnaies, médailles et antiques.</p> <p>Le catalogue débute avec une présentation détaillée du contexte historique de la collection et notamment du rôle fondamental du collectionneur <a href="https://comitehistoire.bnf.fr/dictionnaire-fonds/froehner" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wilhelm Froehner</a> (1834-1925) dans l’arrivée à la Bibliothèque d’objets présentant des inscriptions en étrusque. Puis, en adoptant un classement thématique, l’auteur propose 178 notices qui recensent les textes inscrits sur des objets, de la simple lettre à une succession de mots. Les supports sont aussi variés que des vases, des bronzes, des miroirs, des intailles, des dés et un grand nombre de monnaies. Elle est tirée d’un roman d’Alessandro Verri publié en 1784 <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8595081s/f5.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Le Avventure di Saffo </em></a>qui a connu un immense <a href="https://books.openedition.org/efr/32492" target="_blank" rel="noopener">succès d’édition en Europe</a>. Reprenant un procédé habituel de son époque visant à intéresser son lectorat tout en évitant la censure, Verri prétend que son roman est une simple traduction italienne d’un manuscrit rare en grec ancien. En réalité, il s’est inspiré d’un mythe postérieur à la vie de Sappho, lui-même <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9786033z/f218.image" target="_blank" rel="noopener">repris par Ovide</a>, poète latin du I<sup>er</sup> siècle ap. Le décor naturel et la position alanguie de Sappho donnent cependant une coloration romantique à cet imaginaire antique. La lyre devient un symbole de sentimentalisme avant d’être un attribut des qualités musicales de Sappho. En effet, la poétesse est d’autant plus passionnée qu’elle est incapable de jouer de son instrument.</p> <p>La légende de l’image joue elle aussi sur une pseudo-authenticité philologique : ΦΑΙΝΟΜΑΙ ΑΠΝΟΥΣ « je me trouve sans souffle » est bien une citation d’un poème de Sappho transmis par le <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9613570v/f180.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Traité du Sublime </em></a>de Longin et traduit pour la première fois en français par <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k8701042z/f460.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anne Dacier</a>. Ce poème, écrit à la première personne, décrit les symptômes du désir homoérotique ressenti par la locutrice à la vue d’une femme accompagnée par un homme non-identifié. Or, dans le contexte du roman de Verri, la citation est complètement détournée pour donner l’impression que c’est la pensée pour Phaon qui est à l’origine de cette perte de souffle.</p> <p>Cette image illustre ainsi parfaitement le processus qui a abouti à la création d’un lyrisme moderne entre la fin du XVIII<sup>e</sup> siècle et le début du XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle. En partant d’un imaginaire fantasmé de la poésie amoureuse grecque, les auteurs rompent avec la rationalité néoclassique, faisant de la lyre un symbole de la spontanéité des sentiments, et reléguant ainsi au second plan les qualités musicales des poètes dont ils prétendent s’inspirer. Ce processus annonciateur du romantisme est ici accompagné d’une double invisibilisation visant à faire de Sappho une figure de la femme amoureuse par excellence : effacement de l’homoérotisme de ses poèmes, et focalisation sur ses sentiments au détriment de ses qualités musicales.
