Les moments de fin de vie ont toujours revêtu un caractère symbolique particulier. Les rituels et croyances qui y sont associés sont des thèmes chers en sciences humaines et sociales. Le décès en milieu hospitalier interpelle différemment ce rituel de passage où le « savoir mourir » est à apprivoiser. Savoirs faire et savoirs être, réflexions éthiques, médicales, philosophiques et anthropologiques se rencontrent dans cet ouvrage où professionnels de la santé et chercheurs en sciences sociales étayent ce sujet sensible. Destiné à tous — parents, chercheurs, intervenants sociaux et professionnels de la santé —, il propose un éventail de voix évoquant de manière originale et complémentaire le thème du mourir à l’ère biotechnologique. Moreover, archaeologists have become more aware of the scientific potential of combining archaeological and anthropological studies within a more structured framework that illustrates the complexity of the funerary process, generally subject to cultural and chronological influences and, on a local level, by group practice and individual acts. By combining the study of material culture and funerary architecture with biological and taphonomical data, research now focuses all funerary practices, from the way the body is prepared and the significance of the grave goods to the building of monuments and their impact on the surrounding landscape. Inhumation and cremation have co-existed and have replaced each other as the dominant funerary practice throughout the Bronze Age according to geographical and cultural contexts. Inhumation and cremation can even coexist within the same community either during a period of transition from one dominant practice to another or perhaps to mark a difference in social status. These two very different mortuary practices have the same goal which is to transcend the body’s decomposition. However cremation does not seek to maintain the body as a whole and in certain burials only a symbolic representation of the cremated remains is included, where a small handful of bone fragments is enough to express the body as the pars pro toto. Early and Middle Bronze Age burials are often devoid of funerary effects, except for burials with rich metallic grave goods such as in Brittany. Metal was such a rare commodity that grave goods were more likely to be of perishable materials such as wood, textiles or leather. Consequently many burials from this period can only be dated by radiocarbon analyses. Tombs, notably in the east and south of France, see a general increase in grave goods during the Late Bronze Age, due to the “democratisation” of bronze objects and to changes in funerary practices. Inhumations and cremations alike contain the personal belongings of the deceased such as jewellery (rings, bracelets, necklaces, pins) and other ornaments (buttons, buckles, etc). These personal affects are significant, in inhumations, they adorn the body, in cremations they are bent or sometimes broken or have even been cremated with the body on the pyre. They are placed in the funerary urn in direct contact with the bone fragments thus re-establishing the strong link between the object and its owner by displaying the wearer’s social and geographical origins. Objects relating to a craft or even a commercial activity such as daggers, knives, small bone weighing scales and various tools are also found in graves. From the aristocratic burials of Early Bronze Age Brittany, to the “warriors” of Late Bronze Age Burgundy, weapons are present in funerary contexts throughout the Bronze Age and their symbolic meaning cannot be under-estimated, however with the advent of cremation most Late Bronze Age funerary contexts are devoid of such objects, whereas the ritual deposit of swords in rivers continues until the very end of the Bronze Age (Milcent 2004). Two types of pottery vessel form part of the funerary deposit, the accessory vessels used as containers for offerings and, in the case of cremations, funerary urns housing the cremated remains of the dead. Pottery funerary urns are used throughout the Bronze Age and in the case of Late Bronze Age cremations can easily be distinguished from other vessels by their larger size, underlining an established hierarchy between the funerary urn and accessory vessels. Other types of container made out of perishable materials such as wood, bark, leather and textiles can also be used, while in some cases, the bones are simply deposited in a small pit. Even if the funerary architecture of cremations is generally simpler, there is still the desire to protect the remnants of the body, be it in a more adapted form. Be it in large funerary chambers lined with wood and stone, isolated often inaccessible caves or stone cists, the body is at the centre of a complex staging of death involving the ritual arrangement of objects in the tomb and an elaborate underground architecture that provides an echo to the ostentatious markers above ground, the stelae and the burial mounds. Most burial mounds in France (except surviving monuments in Western France) have been reduced to round or oval shaped ditches due to centuries of heavy ploughing. The earliest ring-ditch monuments are amongst the most impressive in size attaining up to 56m in diameter such as the triple ring ditch at Fréthun (Pas-de-Calais). In North-eastern France, the main phase of monument building commences towards the end of the Middle Bronze Age under the cultural influence of the Haguenau Culture, but the progressive adoption of cremation marks the end of this phase until the construction of new tumuli during the Bronze Age/Iron Age transition period. Even during periods when no funerary monuments are erected, burials continue to be located near to pre-existing barrows with the more important monuments defining territories with a strong communal identity. Ritual structures and spaces appear during the Late Bronze Age within funerary contexts. The excavation of many circular ditches has revealed no central tomb, either because the burial has not been preserved or because the monument never housed one. Recent studies have underlined that certain ring ditch monuments include an internal or external architecture of posts which could correspond to a construction similar to the wood henges of Northern Europe. Votive offerings of prestigious pottery deposits or animal skulls have also been found. These examples give the impression of a group of isolated practices that pertain to different rituals and cults within the funerary sphere, however the construction of monuments with a specific ceremonial purpose goes one step towards establishing a more formalised and communal approach to ritual practices. To conclude, Bronze Age funerary practices can be interpreted in many different ways. For the individual, not only do they express group belief and cultural belonging but also social status in both the world of the living and the world of the dead. For the community, they are the means of cohesion and identity and define community concessions and territory. Ce processus historique et politique trouve son pendant philosophique dans une conception de la matière pensée comme pure étendue mesurable et manipulable. Un même geste préside à ce double mouvement : la tentative d&#39;éliminer tout ce qui, dans la matière et dans les corps, engage une résistance (accidents, contingences, variations, forces d&#39;irruption...). La matière devient dès lors le support neutre et indifférencié sur lequel le pouvoir de l&#39;Homme trouve à s&#39;exprimer sans autres limites que celles du « progrès » scientifique et technologique. Or le matérialisme dialectique de Marx ne permettra pas de rompre avec ce matérialisme productif. La théorie du travail (le paradigme hylémorphique à l&#39;aune duquel il est pensé) reconduit la perspective anthropocentrique qui le fonde. Une autre conception de la matière, et donc un autre matérialisme, se profile cependant dans la persistance spectrale des forces révolutionnaires. « Un spectre hante l&#39;Europe, le spectre du communisme ». Le spectre dit ici la persistance d&#39;une force matérielle paradoxale, d&#39;une force qui échappe à toute positivité appréhendable. Cette force matérielle se déploie comme puissance et indique la persistance, à même le corps social, d&#39;un indomptable. C&#39;est depuis la persistance d&#39;une telle puissance, d&#39;une puissance de résistance et de frayage, d&#39;une puissance d&#39;irruption, qu&#39;il s&#39;agira de repenser la matière et le rapport à la matière. A un moment où le matérialisme productif du Capital trouve à s&#39;accomplir dans l&#39;achèvement du projet anthropotechnique, l&#39;enjeu consiste à destituer le pouvoir démiurgique que l&#39;homme moderne, sous la forme du producteur, s&#39;est attribué, pour laisser vivre le déploiement d&#39;une matière pensée comme puissance, en réveillant ce qui, en elle, persiste et résiste à toute tentative de capture et de production. N&#39;est-ce pas en s&#39;exposant à l&#39;épreuve d&#39;une puissance-matière, d&#39;une puissance destitutrice du pouvoir, que l&#39;on rendra justice au spectre, à sa puissance irruptive et indomptable ? La perspective révolutionnaire qui se profile dans cette épreuve n&#39;est plus celle d&#39;une réappropriation des moyens de production permettant à l&#39;homme de renforcer sa domination sur une nature objectivée, mais au contraire celle d&#39;une désappropriation qui réinscrit l&#39;être humain dans le mouvement persistant du naturer. L&#39;enjeu n&#39;est plus, aujourd&#39;hui, de répondre au seul problème des conditions de vie de la collectivité humaine, mais de préserver les conditions même de la vie, c&#39;est-à-dire à la fois d&#39;un commun qui concerne l&#39;ensemble des modes de vie des êtres de nature et de leur être-avec sensible. Le Manifeste du Parti Communiste s&#39;ouvre par l&#39;invocation d&#39;une puissance, puissance spectrale qui hante l&#39;Europe : le spectre du communisme. La puissance dit alors moins l&#39;union que la faille qui persiste à même le fantasme d&#39;unité ou d&#39;unification. Cette faille traverse l&#39;Europe, la divise de part en part. Le temps est hors de ses gonds 1 , il est désajusté. Et le spectre surgit dans l&#39;intervalle de ce désajustement. Or le Manifeste a pour fonction d&#39;actualiser cette puissance, de la faire passer à l&#39;acte dans l&#39;espace politique et, ce faisant, de résorber la faille, de réajuster le temps, de dialectiser la disjonction au sein d&#39;une unité supérieure, celle du genre humain réuni. La puissance vise donc à s&#39;abolir comme puissance pour s&#39;organiser en pouvoir, un pouvoir capable de battre sur son propre terrain le pouvoir de l&#39;ennemi, celui d&#39;une classe particulière-classe bourgeoise-confondu avec celui de l&#39;Etat. S&#39;ouvre dès lors la voie d&#39;une prise de pouvoir indissociable d&#39;une réappropriation des moyens de production qui en actualise l&#39;effectivité sur le plan économique. Deux moments donc, constitutifs du processus révolutionnaire tel qu&#39;il se trouve mis en scène dans la Manifeste. Or ces deux moments correspondent aussi à deux manières contradictoires de penser la puissance et le pouvoir, le rapport au pouvoir.
