This is a large region with different ecological units which include the Riverside shoals in the south and the plains in the north. Between both areas, material continuities are seen in general terms, but also particularities involve the site formation process of the Cerro Lutz archaeological site. It is a shell midden with two occupational components, the later one with mortuary activities. Although similarities were noted in the bone and lithic assemblages from both areas, it is not clear if they function in the same manner. In this paper, microscopic evidence of bone and lithic tools from Cerro Lutz will be analysed and discussed in the light of the published data from the Riverside shoals. Results confirmed that in both areas artefacts were used on different actions and materials, showing differences in the lithic assemblage. While use-wear in southern sites show bone use, soft materials were recorded in Cerro Lutz, suggesting a differential use of technology that could be related to raw material availability.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Use-wear on bone and lithic tools to discuss functional site variability in the Paraná Basin: The Cerro Lutz archaeological site, Late Holocene, Argentina","attachmentId":66692764,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/47750874/Use_wear_on_bone_and_lithic_tools_to_discuss_functional_site_variability_in_the_Paran%C3%A1_Basin_The_Cerro_Lutz_archaeological_site_Late_Holocene_Argentina","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/47750874/Use_wear_on_bone_and_lithic_tools_to_discuss_functional_site_variability_in_the_Paran%C3%A1_Basin_The_Cerro_Lutz_archaeological_site_Late_Holocene_Argentina"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="48266210" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/48266210/Lithic_artefacts_and_the_production_of_metallic_goods_A_case_of_study_in_north_western_Argentina">Lithic artefacts and the production of metallic goods. The approach combines the complementary perspective of experimental work with native copper and the use-wear analysis of lithic artefacts. Such an approach has never been carried out in technological studies of Argentine archaeology and the available information on the subject for the southern region of the Andes is very limited. The results obtained so far have allowed us to begin to recognize the diversity of traces present in lithic artefacts that could indicate their use at different stages of the production of metal goods in the workshop. We consider as an initial hypothesis that some of the recorded microscopic traces occurred during deformation, rolling or polishing work in native copper and tin bronze. Trace analysis also allowed us to observe the presence of impregnations unknown so far in other artefacts from metallurgical contexts in local archaeology.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Lithic artefacts and the production of metallic goods. More specifically, the main goal is to assess whether there is any relationship among raw material selection, retouching intensity, and the morphology of retouched artifacts. Through the analysis of several correlations between the knapping quality of the different raw materials employed and the index of invasiveness and curvature, it is inferred that raw materials were selected according to their homogeneous texture and convex shape in order to produce long retouched edges. As most of the retouched artifacts have been produced on unifacial blanks, using unipolar debitage techniques which does not require specific knapping skills, it is proposed that similarities found in the three archaeological sites can be explained as a result of oral transmission of basic technological knowledge.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Retouched artifacts production in three hunter-gatherer contexts from Tierra del Fuego (southernmost South America, Argentina): Avilés 1, Avilés 3 and Herradura 1 ","attachmentId":34550045,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/8100837/Retouched_artifacts_production_in_three_hunter_gatherer_contexts_from_Tierra_del_Fuego_southernmost_South_America_Argentina_Avil%C3%A9s_1_Avil%C3%A9s_3_and_Herradura_1","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/8100837/Retouched_artifacts_production_in_three_hunter_gatherer_contexts_from_Tierra_del_Fuego_southernmost_South_America_Argentina_Avil%C3%A9s_1_Avil%C3%A9s_3_and_Herradura_1"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="5" data-entity-id="45453117" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/45453117/Technological_Analysis_of_the_Formal_Chipped_Stone_Tool_Assemblage_from_Old_Town_LA_1113_with_Obsidian_Provenance_Studies_from_Selected_Archaeological_Sites_throughout_the_Mimbres_Valley">Technological Analysis of the Formal Chipped Stone Tool Assemblage from Old Town (LA 1113) with Obsidian Provenance Studies from Selected Archaeological Sites throughout the Mimbres Valley</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="2280374" href="https://utexas.academia.edu/MatthewTaliaferro">Matthew Taliaferro</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Technological Analysis of the Formal Chipped Stone Tool Assemblage from Old Town (LA 1113) with Obsidian Provenance Studies from Selected Archaeological Sites throughout the Mimbres Valley","attachmentId":65961295,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/45453117/Technological_Analysis_of_the_Formal_Chipped_Stone_Tool_Assemblage_from_Old_Town_LA_1113_with_Obsidian_Provenance_Studies_from_Selected_Archaeological_Sites_throughout_the_Mimbres_Valley","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/45453117/Technological_Analysis_of_the_Formal_Chipped_Stone_Tool_Assemblage_from_Old_Town_LA_1113_with_Obsidian_Provenance_Studies_from_Selected_Archaeological_Sites_throughout_the_Mimbres_Valley"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="95106092" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/95106092/2023_Dubreuil_L_J_Robitaille_J_Gonzalez_Urquijo_J_Marreiros_and_A_Stroulia_A_family_of_wear_Traceological_Patterns_on_Pebbles_Used_for_Burnishing_Pots_and_Processing_Other_Plastic_Mineral_Matters_Journal_of_Archaeological_Method_and_Theory_2023_144_201">2023. This paper aims to illuminate the chaînes opératoires employed in the transformation of PMM and highlight early evidence for these technologies in the archaeological record. Our focus is 'ad-hoc' (or non-manufactured) ground stone tools used in finishing operations. Specifically, we discuss pebbles and cobbles employed to regularize, smooth, or burnish clay and mud-based products. Because these tools consist of unmodified rocks, recognizing and understanding the traces developed through use is essential for their identification. This is a pilot study that draws on experiments, ethnographic studies and quantification via confocal microscopy to assess the variability of use-wear developed on mud and clay processors. Extra attention is placed on micro-polish, not only because this type of wear has been seldom described before for such tools, but also because it appears to be highly diagnostic. We suggest that the variability observed can be described as a family of wear, that is, a range of recurrent use-wear characteristics associated with the processing of PMM. We analyze two collections associated with different chrono-cultural contexts: the Late Natufian site of Hilazon Tachtit in the Southern Levant and the Late Neolithic site of Kremasti-Kilada in Greece. At both sites, the identification of processors of PMM provides pivotal data to understand the relevant chaînes opératoires, assess the emergence and development of these technologies, and also explore symbolic behaviors.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"2023. The program addressed the manufacture and use of awls and spatulas made from goat metapods, and their analysis and documentation. It sheds light on significant aspects of the bone tool assemblages placed in the graves of the " Pit Burial Culture ". We present preliminary findings from Middle Neolithic necropolis in Catalonia, northwestern Iberia. Despite the heavy disturbance (due to natural processes but also consolidation, restoration and storage) we were able to determine the manufacturing process for these materials, as well as the use of some tools. Moreover, in some cases we found that the materials were not used, or were refitted before being deposited in the graves.
