(Ross served as the magazine’s editor until his death in December 1951.) While the magazine’s debut issue was a flop, and it initially struggled to stay afloat, the magazine found its first success with its reporting on the 1925 <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Scopes-Trial" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Scopes Monkey Trial</a>. <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/E-B-White" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">E.B. Newhouse, Jr., this being the first time in its history that the magazine’s ownership had changed hands. <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/William-Shawn" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">William Shawn</a> was the magazine’s editor in chief from 1952 to 1987, when he was succeeded by <span id="ref1046838"></span>Robert Gottlieb, formerly a book editor and executive at <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Alfred-A-Knopf" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Alfred A.
