If any one walks in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world;<Fr> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><FR>but, if any one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."<Fr> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>These things He spake; and after this He saith to them, <FR>"Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going to awake him out of sleep."<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The disciples, therefore, said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover!" <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now Jesus had spoken concerning his death; but they thought He spake of taking rest in sleep. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then, therefore, Jesus said to them plainly, <FR>"Lazarus died.<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><FR>And I am glad, for your sakes, (in order that ye may believe), that I was not there. But let us go to him."<Fr> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Thomas, who is called Dydimus, said, therefore, to His fellow-disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with Him."<p> <A name="18"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, having come, found that he had already been four days in the tomb. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs distant. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met Him; but Mary was sitting in the house. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Martha, therefore, said to Jesus, "Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died; <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>and now I know that, whatsoever Thou shalt ask of God, God will give Thee." <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Jesus saith to her, <FR>"Your brother shall rise again."<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Martha says to Him, "I know that he will rise again, in the resurrection at the last day." <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Jesus said to her, <FR>"I am the resurrection and the life; he that believes on Me, though he die, yet shall he live;<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>and whosoever lives and believes on Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>She says to Him, "Yea, Lord; I have believed that Thou art the Christ, the Son of God, He Who <i>was to</i> come into the world."<p> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And, saying this, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, "The Teacher is present, and calleth for you." <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And she, when she heard <i>it</i>, arose quickly, and went to Him.<p> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>(Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.) <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>The Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, seeing Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb, to weep there. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing Him, fell at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died." <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, when He saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, groaned in the spirit, and troubled Himself; <A name="35"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>and He said, <FR>"Where have ye laid Him?"<Fr> They say to Him, "Lord, come and see." <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Jesus wept. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>The Jews, therefore, said, "Behold, how He was loving him! <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And some of them said, "Could not This Man, Who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not die?"<p> <A name="39"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Raises Lazarus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../acts/9.htm#36">Acts 9:36–43</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, again groaning in Himself, cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying on it. <A name="40"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Jesus saith, <FR>"Take ye away the stone."<Fr> The sister of the deceased, Martha, says to Him, "Lord, already he is decaying; for he has been dead four days." <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Jesus saith to her, <FR>"Did I not say to you that, if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?"<Fr> <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up His eyes, and said, <FR>"Father, I thank Thee, because Thou didst hear Me.<Fr> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span><FR>And I knew that Thou always hearest Me; but, because of the multitude standing around, I said <i>it</i>, that they may believe that Thou didst send Me."<Fr> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And, having spoken these words, He cried with a loud voice, <FR>"Lazarus, come forth!"<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>He that was dead came forth, bound feet and hands with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, <FR>"Loose him, and let him go."<Fr><p> <A name="46"></a><p class="hdg">The Plot to Kill Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm">Matthew 26:1–5</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm">Mark 14:1–2</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm">Luke 22:1–2</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Many, therefore, of the Jews who came to Mary and beheld what He did, believed on Him; <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>but some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did.<p> <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>The high priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? because This Man is doing many signs. <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>If we let Him thus alone, all will believe on Him; and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and our nation. <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said, "Ye know nothing at all; <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>nor do ye consider that it is expedient for you, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not." <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And this he said not of himself; but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for that nation; <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>and not for that nation only, but that He might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad. <A name="54"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>From that day, therefore, they took counsel, that they might put Him to death.<p> <A name="55"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, was no longer openly walking about among the Jews; but He went away thence into the country near to the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there He abode with the disciples.<p> <A name="56"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>Now the passover of the Jews was near; and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves. <A name="57"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>They were, therefore, seeking for Jesus, and were saying one with another, while standing in the temple, "What think ye?
