It is identified as a Canaanite city-state during the time of Joshua and later as a city within the territory allotted to the tribe of Judah. The city is significant in biblical history for its involvement in the coalition against the Israelites and its subsequent inclusion in the inheritance of the tribes of Israel.

Biblical References:

1. Canaanite City-State:
Jarmuth is first mentioned in the context of the conquest of Canaan by the Israelites. It was one of the five Amorite cities that formed a coalition against Joshua and the Israelites. The king of Jarmuth, Piram, joined forces with the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Lachish, and Eglon to attack Gibeon, which had made peace with Israel. This coalition is described in Joshua 10:3-5: "So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying, 'Come up and help me. We will attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.' Then the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—joined forces, advanced with all their armies, besieged Gibeon, and fought against it."

2. Conquest by Joshua:
The coalition of Amorite kings was defeated by Joshua in a miraculous battle where the sun stood still, allowing the Israelites to achieve a complete victory. The defeat of the king of Jarmuth is recorded in Joshua 10:23, where the five kings are captured and executed. This victory was part of Joshua's southern campaign to conquer the land of Canaan.

3. Allotment to Judah:
After the conquest of Canaan, Jarmuth was allotted to the tribe of Judah as part of their inheritance. It is listed among the cities in the Shephelah, or lowland region, in Joshua 15:35: "Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah."

4. Post-Exilic Period:
Jarmuth is also mentioned in the post-exilic period as a city where the people of Judah resettled after returning from Babylonian captivity. Nehemiah 11:29 lists Jarmuth among the towns where the people of Judah lived: "Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages; in Lachish and its fields; and in Azekah and its villages. So they settled from Beersheba all the way to the Valley of Hinnom."

Archaeological and Historical Context:
Jarmuth is identified with the modern site of Khirbet Yarmuk, located in the Shephelah region of Israel. Archaeological excavations have revealed remains from various periods, including the Canaanite and Israelite eras. The city's strategic location in the fertile lowlands made it an important site throughout history.

Theological Significance:
Jarmuth's role in the biblical narrative highlights the theme of divine intervention and the fulfillment of God's promises to the Israelites. The defeat of the Amorite coalition, including Jarmuth, underscores the power of God in delivering His people and establishing them in the Promised Land. The city's inclusion in the territory of Judah reflects the broader theme of the inheritance and settlement of the tribes of Israel as ordained by God.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Jarmuth
fearing, or seeing, or throwing down, death
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Jarmuth
(high).

A town in the low country of Judah.
