And now, when He was not far distant from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, "Lord, trouble not Thyself; for I am not worthy that Thou shouldest come under my roof. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Wherefore, neither thought I myself worthy to come to Thee; but speak with a word, and let my boy be healed; <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>for I also am a man set under authority, having soldiers under myself; and I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does <i>it</i>." <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And, hearing these things, Jesus marvelled at him; and, turning, He said to the multitude following Him, <FR>"I say to you, not even in Israel did I find such faith!"<Fr> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And those <i>who were</i> sent, having returned to the house, found the servant well.<p> <A name="12"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And it came to pass soon afterwards that He went to a city called Nain; and there were going with Him His disciples, and a large multitude. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And, as He came near to the gate of the city, behold, also there was being carried out one dead, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd of the city was with her. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And, seeing her, the Lord was moved with compassion towards her, and said to her, <FR>"Weep not."<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And, going forward, He touched the bier; and those bearing <i>it</i> stood still; and He said, <FR>"Young man, I say to you, Arise!"<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the dead sat up, and began to speak. And He gave him to his mother. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And fear seized on all; and they were glorifying God, saying, "A great prophet was raised up among us," and "God did visit His people." <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And this report concerning Him went forth in all Judaea, and in all the surrounding country.<p> <A name="19"></a><p class="hdg">John’s Inquiry<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/11.htm">Matthew 11:1–6</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And, calling to him two of his disciples, John sent <i>them</i> to the Lord, saying, "Art Thou the Coming One, or are we to expect another?" <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And, coming near to Him, the men said, "John, the Immerser, sent us to Thee, saying, 'Art Thou the Coming One, or are we to expect another?'" <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>In that hour He cured many of diseases, and plagues, and evil spirits; and to many blind He bestowed sight. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And, answering, He said to them, <FR>"Going your way, announce to John what ye saw and heard: <i>the</i> blind receive sight, <i>the</i> lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and <i>the</i> deaf hear, <i>the</i> dead are raised, and <i>the</i> poor have the Gospel proclaimed to them.<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>And happy is he, whosoever shall find no cause of stumbling in Me."<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Testifies about John<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/11.htm#7">Matthew 11:7–19</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And, the messengers of John having gone away, He began to say to the multitudes concerning John, <FR>"What went ye forth into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken by the wind?<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>But what went ye forth to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those <i>clothed</i> in splendid apparel, and living in luxury, are in kingly courts!<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>But what went ye forth to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and much more than a prophet.<Fr><p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>This is he concerning whom it has been written, 'Behold, I send forth My messenger before Thy face, who will prepare Thy way before Thee.'<Fr><p> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; but the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he."<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And all the people, having heard, and the tax-collectors, justified God, having been immersed with the immersion of John. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God as to themselves, not having been immersed by him.<p> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>"To what, then, shall I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like?<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>They are like children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, who say, 'We piped to you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not weep.'<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>For John, the Immerser, has come, neither eating bread, nor drinking wine; and ye say, 'He has a demon.'<Fr> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>The Son of Man has come, eating and drinking; and ye say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a wine-drinker, a Friend of tax-collectors and sinners!'<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>And Wisdom was justified by all her children."<Fr><p> <A name="37"></a><p class="hdg">A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#6">Matthew 26:6–13</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#3">Mark 14:3–9</a>; <a href ="../john/12.htm">John 12:1–8</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And one of the Pharisees was asking Him to eat with him; and, having entered into the Pharisee's house, He reclined <i>at table</i>. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And, behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner; and, learning that He was reclining <i>at table</i> in the house of the Pharisee, having provided an alabaster cruse of perfume; <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>and standing behind at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and wiped <i>them</i> off with the hair of her head; and she kept kissing His feet, and anointing <i>them</i> with the perfume. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>But, seeing it, the Pharisee who invited Him, spake in himself, saying, "This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what sort of woman this is that is touching Him, because she is a sinner."<p> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And Jesus, answering, said to him, <FR>"Simon, I have something to say to you."<Fr> And he says, "Teacher, say <i>it</i>." <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span><FR>"There were two debtors to a certain money-lender. The one owed five hundred denaries; and the other, fifty.<Fr> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span><FR>And, they having nothing to pay, he forgave them both. Which of them, therefore, will love him <i>the</i> more?"<Fr> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>Simon, answering, said, "He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the more." And He said to him, <FR>"Rightly did you judge."<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And, turning to the woman, He said to Simon, <FR>"Do you behold this woman!
