for it was now evening. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men became about five thousand.<p> <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And it came to pass, the next day, that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem, <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And, having set them in the midst, they were inquiring, "In what power or in what name, did ye do this?" <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>if we are this day examined in regard to a good deed done to an impotent man, by what <i>means</i> this person has been made whole; <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the Name of Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, Whom ye crucified, Whom God raised from the dead, in Him does this man stand here before you well! <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>This is the Stone That was set at naught by you, the builders, Which was made into a head of a corner. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And in no one else is there salvation; for neither is there any other name under Heaven, that has been given among men, in Which we must be saved."<p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">The Name Forbidden<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now, beholding the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlettered and ignorant men, they were wondering; they also were recognizing them, that they had been with Jesus; <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and, seeing the man who had been healed, standing with them, they had nothing to say against <i>it</i>. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But, having ordered them to go aside out of the Sanhedrin, they were conferring one with another, <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>saying, "What shall we do to these men? for, indeed, that a notable sign has been done through them <i>is</i> manifest to all those dwelling in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it; <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>but, that it spread no further among the people, let us threaten them, that they speak no more to any man in This Name." <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And, having called them they charged them not to speak at all, nor teach, in the name of Jesus. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But Peter and John, answering, said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to hearken to you, rather than to God, judge ye; <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>for we cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard." <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And they, when they had further threatened them, released them, finding no way to punish them, on account of the people; because all were glorifying God for what had taken place; <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>for the man, on whom this sign of healing had been done, was more than forty years old.<p> <A name="24"></a><p class="hdg">The Believers’ Prayer<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And, being released, they went to their own <i>friends</i>, and reported all that the high priests and the elders said to them. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And they, having heard <i>it</i>, lifted up <i>their</i> voice to God with one accord, and said, "Lord, Thou Who didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all things in them;<p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Who, through <i>the</i> Holy Spirit by the mouth of our father David, Thy servant, didst say, 'Why did the gentiles rage, and the peoples premeditate empty things?<p> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>The kings of the earth did set themselves in array; and the rulers assembled together, against the Lord, and against His Christ.'<p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>For, of a truth, there were gathered together in this city, against Thy Holy Child Jesus, Whom Thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with <i>the</i> gentiles and peoples of Israel? <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>to do whatsoever Thy hand and Thy counsel predetermined to come to pass. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings; and grant to Thy servants to speak Thy word with all boldness, <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>by stretching forth <i>Thy</i> hand for healing; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Thy Holy Child Jesus." <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And, when they had prayed, the place in which they had assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and were speaking the word of God with boldness.<p> <A name="33"></a><p class="hdg">Sharing among Believers<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../acts/2.htm#42">Acts 2:42–47</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And the heart and soul of the multitude of those who believed were one; and not even one was saying that any of the things belonging to him was his own, but they had all things common. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And, with great power, were the apostles giving forth <i>their</i> testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus; and great grace also was upon them all. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>For neither was any one among them in want; for as many as were possessors of lands or houses, selling <i>them</i>, were bringing the prices of the things sold, <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/4-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>and were laying <i>them</i>, at the feet of the apostles;
