In the context of Jesus' time, the "first" could refer to those who were wealthy, powerful, or held religious authority, such as the Pharisees and Sadducees. These groups were often seen as the most righteous and blessed by God. However, Jesus frequently challenged the notion that external status equated to spiritual favor. This phrase echoes the theme found in Matthew 23:11-12, where Jesus teaches that the greatest among His followers must be a servant. It also reflects the reversal of expectations seen throughout Jesus' ministry, where He elevates the humble and brings down the proud.
will be last
This part of the verse suggests a reversal of roles or fortunes. In the Kingdom of Heaven, earthly status does not guarantee spiritual prominence. This idea is consistent with the Beatitudes in Matthew 5, where Jesus blesses the poor in spirit, the meek, and those who hunger for righteousness. The concept of the first becoming last is a warning to those who rely on their own achievements or status for salvation. It emphasizes humility and the need for a heart aligned with God's values rather than worldly success.
and the last will be first
Here, Jesus offers hope and encouragement to those who are marginalized, oppressed, or considered insignificant by societal standards. The "last" could include the poor, sinners, and Gentiles, who were often looked down upon by the Jewish elite. This phrase is a promise that God's Kingdom operates on principles of grace and mercy, not human merit. It aligns with the parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16), where those hired last receive the same reward as those hired first, illustrating God's generosity and the equality of all believers in His eyes. This reversal is a common theme in the teachings of Jesus, highlighting the transformative power of the Gospel.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The speaker of this verse, Jesus is addressing His disciples and teaching them about the values of the Kingdom of Heaven.

2. Disciples
The immediate audience of Jesus' teaching, they are learning about the nature of God's kingdom and the reversal of worldly expectations.

3. The Rich Young Ruler
The preceding event involves a rich young man who struggles with the call to give up his wealth to follow Jesus, illustrating the challenge of earthly attachments.

4. The Kingdom of Heaven
The central theme of Jesus' teaching, representing God's reign and the values that govern it, which often contrast with worldly values.
Teaching Points
Reversal of Worldly Values
In God's kingdom, status and wealth do not determine one's standing. They had seen one who stood high in his own estimate brought low by the test of the divine Teacher. They were flattering themselves that they, who had left all, and so could stand that test, were among the first in the hierarchy of the kingdom. For them too, unless their spirit should become other than it was in its self-seeking and its self-complacence, there might be an unexpected change of position, and the first might become the last. The parable that follows was designed to bring that truth more vividly before them.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 30. - Many that are first. This proverbial saying, which Christ uses more than once (see Matthew 20:16; Luke 13:30), is illustrated by the parable in the next chapter, and would be better placed at its commencement Here it conveys a warning that man's estimation is liable to error, and it must not be thought that those who are first in privilege are therefore highest in God's favour. The Lord may have had in view the case of Judas, who was an early apostle, and had the care of the bag, and fell by reason of covetousness; and that of one like St. Paul, who was called late, and yet laboured more abundantly than all that were before him. The application may be made with perfect truth to many professors of religion.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
But
δὲ (de)
Conjunction
Strong's 1161: A primary particle; but, and, etc.

many
Πολλοὶ (Polloi)
Adjective - Nominative Masculine Plural
Strong's 4183: Much, many; often.

[who are] first
πρῶτοι (prōtoi)
Adjective - Nominative Masculine Plural
Strong's 4413: First, before, principal, most important.
