async></script></div><p>Allentown received 1.11 inches of precipitation as of early Friday afternoon, according to the <a href="https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=40.6618&lon=-75.4124">National Weather Service’s</a> gauge at the Lehigh Valley International Airport. That follows a spell of unusually arid weather since mid-August.<p>The slow and steady rain-snow mixture was beneficial, but it is too soon to tell if will change the area’s drought conditions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s <a href="https://www.drought.gov/current-conditions">drought information system</a> shows most of eastern Pennsylvania still experiencing severe drought, or D2 — the middle level of five on the drought monitor scale. The recent wet weather brings the November precipitation total to about 1.4 inches, less than half the November average with one week left in the month.</p><iframe src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/N3WTk/3/" width="100%" height="590px" scrolling="yes" class="iframe" allowtransparency="1" id="67c43a30abf69" allowfullscreen="yes" allow="geolocation"></iframe><p>Allentown is still in a four-inch rainfall deficit for this time of the year, and, with a little more than five weeks left in the year, about 8 inches shy of the average annual total.</p><p>Still, the rain has improved conditions in area waterways. The Lehigh River was at an eight-year low before the rain moved in, and was running at less than 20% of its November average flow rate. The river hit its most recent peak of 863 cubic feet (almost 6,500 gallons) per second at 3 p.m. Thursday, but has since diminished to about 750 cubic feet per sec.</p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/KrJZ3/3/" width="100%" height="620px" scrolling="yes" class="iframe" allowtransparency="1" id="67c43a30abfc6" allowfullscreen="yes" allow="geolocation"></iframe><p>Other area streams experienced even more dramatic crests and falls. These two graphs show stream flows in the Jordan and Little Lehigh creeks. The numbers for the Jordan come from a monitor near the bridge that carries MacArthur Road over the creek in Whitehall. It is still flowing at more than 60 cubic feet, about one-third higher than before the rains.</p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/QvJM4/4/" width="100%" height="580px" scrolling="yes" class="iframe" allowtransparency="1" id="67c43a30abff0" allowfullscreen="yes" allow="geolocation"></iframe><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/fY5NK/1/" width="100%" height="620px" scrolling="yes" class="iframe" allowtransparency="1" id="67c43a30ac00d" allowfullscreen="yes" allow="geolocation"></iframe><p>At the other end of the spectrum is the Delaware River, with a drainage basin of more than 6,300 square miles from the Riegelsville monitoring station north. The waterway includes the flows of numerous creeks and rivers, including the Lehigh, which joins about five miles upstream from the monitoring station. The graph below shows the effluent of the recent rains as a relative blip in the curve, increasing from 3,320 cubic feet to 4,000 before receding slightly.</p><div class="dfp-ad dfp-cube_article" id="div-gpt-ad-cube_article" style="visibility:hidden"> <div class="htlad-cube_article" data-unit="mcall.com/news/weather/cube_article" data-targeting=""></div> </div><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/IusgZ/3/" width="100%" height="610px" scrolling="yes" class="iframe" allowtransparency="1" id="67c43a30ac02a" allowfullscreen="yes" allow="geolocation"></iframe><p>Finally, the USGS observation well in Upper Macungie has just begun to show an increase in groundwater levels as of Friday afternoon, as it takes longer for water to percolate through the soil than it does for it to flow across the surface and drain into a stream.
