field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>On weekdays during the school year, the Library offers a variety of facilitated experiences for students of all ages.</p> <p>Each guided program lasts 1-2 hours and can accommodate up to 80 students per program. All programs connect with state and national curriculum standards in history, social studies, civics, government, and English language arts.</p> <p>Field trips are free for New England schools. Schools outside of this region will be charged per person according to our <a href="/visit-museum/visit/plan-your-trip/groups">group admission rates</a>. Kennedy?</h3> <p>Students become biographers as they explore John F. Kennedy's early years, his presidency, and the contributions he made to our nation and the world. They analyze primary sources in the museum as they gather and record information in their "Biographer's Workbook."</p> <h3>Singing for Freedom: Music and the Civil Rights Movement</h3> <p>Students investigate primary sources and song lyrics to discover the essential role music played in the civil rights movement. They sing several freedom songs and hear first-hand accounts of how singing helped motivate and sustain activists who were fighting for racial equality. They also examine President Kennedy’s key actions related to the civil rights struggle.</p> <h3>Civil Rights, Civic Action</h3> <p>This program helps students make connections between the organized nonviolent actions of the civil rights movement and civic action today. They examine photographs of lesser-known civil rights activists and learn how they used the tools of democracy to fight for justice and equality. Students use a graphic organizer in the exhibits to identify civic actions taken during the Kennedy Administration.</p> <h3>Investigating the March on Washington</h3> <p>Students consider the question, “How do people bring about change in the government and in their communities?” as they investigate the history of the 1963 March on Washington. They examine primary sources to discover the story behind the march and President Kennedy’s role in it. After visiting exhibits related to the civil rights movement, students hold their own “March,” drawing on the inspiring words of that historic event.</p> <h3>Presidential Campaigns and Elections</h3> <p>Using the 1960 election as a case study, students learn the steps to becoming President of the United States. Students explore primary sources in the museum to discover important information about the 1960 election. Students examine primary source material -- documents, photographs, and video -- to learn about racial discrimination in voting during the Kennedy years and strategies that public officials, activists, and everyday citizens used to address it. The program also explores voting rights today and actions students can take to protect this “most powerful and precious right” for everyone. Kennedy was elected president in one of the closest elections in US history. He was also the youngest man ever elected president, the first Catholic, and the first president born in the 20th century. How did it happen? In this civics program, students will learn about the electoral process and make connections between this historic 1960 election and those of the present day.</p> <h2><a class="ck-anchor" id="High School College"></a>High School and College Guided Programs</h2> <h3>The Cold War</h3> <p>The Cold War, the ideological conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, was in full swing by the time John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960. During his tenure in office, President Kennedy would navigate one of the most tense periods in the history of the nearly 50 year long conflict. In this program, students will learn about and analyze how the Kennedy administration took on Cold War challenges. They will then put themselves in Kennedy’s shoes and experience the complexity of presidential decision making. Students will then apply the lessons they learned to current foreign policy questions.</p> <h3>First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy: A Life</h3> <p>First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy is largely remembered today as an icon of the early 1960s. However, America’s youngest First Lady was more than a fashionable figure, as her life reflects the evolving roles and expectations of women during the second half of the twentieth century. In this biographical program, students will learn about Jacqueline Kennedy’s life before, during, and after her time in the White House and discover how her story is a microcosm of women’s history during the time period in which she lived.</p> <h3>Civil Rights Movement During the Early 1960s</h3> <p>By the time President John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960, the civil rights movement had made some gains but so much more work remained. The struggle for civil rights was the predominant issue in American domestic politics for the entirety of President Kennedy’s administration. In this program, students will explore the key events, tactics, and outcomes of important civil rights moments from 1960-1963.
