Data collection took place through standardized censuses and ornithological observations in situ, from September 2010 to September 2020, integrated with an accurate bibliographic research on historical data. A total of 253 species have been recorded in the site; 59 (23.32%) breed in the area, whereas 50 (19.76%) species are vagrant and 72 species (28.57%) are included in the Annex I of the Birds Directive (79/409/CEE). We determined the following indices: NP/P (ratio between the number of species non Passerines and Passerines) = 1.94, O.V.I. (Ornithological Value Index) = 20.80. Using the point/transect method, 36 species (32 breeding) have been recorded. Olive groves managed without undergrowth showed the higher values of number of species, normalized richness, mean abundance and Shannon-Wiener diversity, probably for the higher availability of ecotones: however, these preliminary data need to be confirmed. The key parameters of the community were analysed: richness, abundance, dominance, diversity, evenness and daily en ergy expenditure for each 15-day period in which counts were made. A census for all breeding species was also carried out. Forty-nine species were encountered, the most abundant of which was Anas platyrhynchos, Fulica atra and Gallinula chloropus. There was nega tive trend in the bird population for all species combined during the years of the study, probably caused by the worsening of the water conditions due to a decrease of aquatic macrophytes. In order to obtain data about local composition, occurrence, distribution and richness, we correlated data with environmental heterogeneity and vegetation structure variables. We recorded 58 species in 48 500x500 m-wide atlas units, with Parus major, Corvus cornix, Turdus merula, Sylvia atricapilla, Sylvia melanocephala, as the most occurring in frequency (&gt; 80%).
